I had a lot of trouble with the previous version of this drive when trying to backup cards with a lot of files on it. (Hundreds of Images) It has made me pause on trying to check this one out. The old drive seemed to work find for tens of files, but if you tried to backup a card that had in the one hundred or so range it missed about 3 to 7 files per 100 or so. I tested it a number of times to see if it was a fluke but consistently happened. Can you make a follow up video where you do the test on both the old drive and new one?
I really don't know I read many bad reviews about reliability, crashing often or struggling to import heavy videos. I need it for use with the Ipad pro the idea is awesome but does it actually deliver working on 4k videos
Hello from 🇺🇸Harrisburg Pennsylvania 🇺🇸 Im new at this Western digital my passport wireless SSD 500GB only had this unit 1week 😀 I’m using my new 2018 12.9 I PAD PRO 3RD Generation with it to back up , My problem is any 2k or 4K video from my GO PRO 7BLACK or my Phantom 4Pro drone will not play right when I try to watch it with my SSD whenever I upload it into the SSD card reader slot ,If I upload the same videos into my iPad Pro the movies playing fine any recommendations
Thanks a lot for this video but I'm missing the comparison between the older generation of WD Wireless Passport and the one you're presenting. I'm hesitating of switching to this new device but I'm not sure I'll see a lot of differences, but maybe I'm wrong. What would be your view on this new version compares to the older version ? Thanks !
Can you preview video over wifi while in lumafusion? I ask as the video you made appears to not have a preview, only an icon in white with some writing. It was quick visual 2 seconds so if you have any other videos to explain re iPad and the drive working over wifi with lumafusion I be grateful Regards Rob
Do you have any recommendations on a cheaper SSD hard drives? I plan on buying one so that I don’t hav to buy a more expensive iPad when I can just get a wireless hard drive to put all of my important videos/pictures on.
How do I select particular videos to transfer from my iPad Pro to the My Passport? I cannot find a way to do so. I want to create a file on the device to move my drone videos over from my iPad to the SSD and I’m struggling to find this in the user interface.
So if I understand you right, when my device "laptop or tablet" is connected to the SSD, I don't have internet anymore because my WiFi is only connected to the SSD!! I'm I right?
Sooo, all I need is a high-capacity external hdd that lets me copy the content of a sd card by the press of a button. No wifi, no cloud, no apps, no phone connection, no charger, no hassle tacking it on airplanes. Just backing up my sd cards during a trip. Is there anything out there for that purpose at all?
Same. I don't even really need the "ruggedness", since I baby all of my gear. Just give me 1) pop in SD, 2) hit button, 3) indication when finished, 4) pop out SD card and roll on
🎄🎅🏻🎄 Happy Holidays 🎄🎁🎄My Question is How do you transfer videos & photos off the WD-SSD back to my I Pad Pro 12.9 3rd Generation If My I pad or I phone 📱 get corrupted or deleted files by accident ???? I try to transfer a photo & video off the WD SSD Back to my IPad Pro THE Option said download but it didn’t download back into my I pad pro Please Help 😧
Do you need to have connection to your phone to backup an SD card in full to the drive, or does the button on the side alone take care of it + some kind of light indicator to let you know the backup is complete?
I am a new to ipad pro 2018 user, everything else I own is windows or android. I am looking for ways to have access to tons of various types of files whether it be movies, loops for making music, photo storage, documents etc. Previously I'd just attatch a flash drive or even a harddrive but since none I have work with a ipad I am looking for some tips. from what I have gathered I have to use something like this wireless harddrive or a file hub with my existing drive. Please help with some advice I need to get one by xmas if possible. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Yes. Basically you connect via wifi to the drive to store whatever files you need on there. The app for it operates like a basic file operating system so you can copy and paste. Most other apps should then allow you to open a compatible file (mp3 in the music app, video in video player, doc in Pages etc). However this does depend on whether the other app will allow you to import a file from the wifi drive - for most premium current apps this shouldn't be an issue. You can also load files to iCloud to and from the device, and many apps will allow access to files from iCloud. In summary it should do the job, but remember that it is a wifi connection to may not be as speedy as you are used to with a connected drive. Another solution would be a simpler USB to Lightning flash drive. These have a lightning connection one end and a USB connection on the other. Simply load the files via USB then plug in to the iPad and again app will give you operating system style basic file system to transfer files to and from the flash drive. It's kinda the same except connected rather than over wifi, and obviously smaller in terms of size and capacity (but it does make it more portable for travel). From.memory Sandisk make such a flash drive and possibly PNY
I have the 2018 ipad pro, its usb c. I have attatched a usb c flash drive to it that I have things on currently and have had no luck seeing the files. Do I need to reformat the flash drive with a mac? Is there a certain type of flash drive that will work?
This drive has two problems. First, for wireless transfer you are limited by the WiFi speed. For wireless, an SSD drive is pointless. Secondly, if you want to transfer the files on the drive to your computer, your speed is hobbled because the drive offers USB 3.0 rather than Thunderbolt 3. With those limitations, the drive makes for very expensive storage per gigabyte. WD does make a standard wireless hard drive which is much cheaper per gigabyte.
+Rory on a Bike: On the money. On the surface, this thing would seem kind of exciting. Then you dig into the specs and realize that its totally unnecessary overkill for the available transmission medium. Sure, SSD fans will talk about stability versus mechanical drives but I'm so not interested in this kind of thing until the prices get down to maybe a maximum of 10-15% higher than current portable drives.
it's not just about speed, here are some basic points to consider, and I agree it's still a very pricey option 1. SSD means no spinning parts = Battery lasts much longer 2. SSD can handle bumps and being tossed into a bag etc, spinning drives run risk of damage 3. SSD will still be inherently faster than any spinning drive.
Rory, can you post the drive you refer to please. I am after live preview over wifi using an iPad Pro. With a possible edit trim video before an import. Regards Rob
A disappointing video as I have just bought one of these but no instruction anywhere on how to set it up, nothing about charging and nothing about how to delete files. No point in making these things unless they are complete.
It's an overview. There are always the instructions that come with it if you want a comprehensive guide to operating it. Charging Is via USB 3.0 port on the side Setting it up? Download the app, it guides you through. Deleting files - select the file in the app and then hit the little delete dustbin. It should then ask you to confirm you would like to delete the files. It operates pretty much like any other operating system in that regard
I've just googled the online support pages and guide for you... Here you go It's 66 pages so would have made for a helluva video... products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-706000.pdf
Anything that has WD on it is total crap. Waste of money and the farthest from user friendliness possible.... do yourself a favor and spend the money on something else...
Thank you, first video I've found that makes it clear I can copy over select files via the app and not have to copy the entire card.
Seriously so simple and straight to the point, and always love the accent!!!
Just what I need! I’m off to Amazon...
Waiting for it's improved version with USB 3.2 Gen2 and USB C connectivity and faster PCIe SSD.

Should have, 1. Type C Transfer & Charging 2.Smaller Size.
Better in thunderbolt 3

Freeflight Paragliding Just do a search for Western Digital wireless hard drive. They make two, one with an SSD drive and one a standard drive.
SSD is a must when traveling.Normal Harddisk is for at home.
excellent desciption
the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more
Anyone have an updated solution for this since this seems to be discontinued and gnarbox seems to be (maybe?) on the way out?
Try Nexto DI. They do some great backup solutions like this.
Also I think Lacie do some as well
Finally but poor SanDisk customer service
This is a WD product.
Nice thanks
Awesome video
👍
USB 2 ??? tha's a shame good video tho
USB 2.0 are you kidding me?? is that for real or is he just mistaken, because that should be USB 3.0 being an ssd drive
USB 2.0
