  • When a first lady of the United States quotes a movie, you know the film has left a mark on culture. Barbara Bush quoted lines from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in her commencement address at Wellesley College in 1990.
Homages to the iconic movie are still being paid today. Movies like Easy A and commercials for Honda and Domino’s Pizza are still referencing moments and lines from the picture.
There is no doubt that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the ultimate teen slacker movies of all time, but here are things only adults notice when watching it now.

How about when Mrs. Bueller is lamenting her day--during the drive home from the police station--she mentions how the commission she lost would've been enough to get Ferris a car... just before he darts across the road, forcing Jeannie to slam on brakes, thus distracting the audience from realizing there was one consequence to his actions: screwing himself out of getting a nice, new car.

Actually, if I was a drunk/dope smoking teenager again in the 80s on a skip day, I could probably get most of this done. Exchange then gallery, then a swim, have some lunch, see some parade and hit an afternoon double header. Traffic wasn’t that bad in the 80’s and I had a car. My girlfriend was better looking too. Off the top of my head I recall one day we skip class after 1st period, went drinking at a buddies house, the space shuttle blew up, we went to lunch, performed in an airband competition at high schooled, were threatened with school suspension for cross dressing during the air band thing, then crossed a border to go drinking in a bar. My buddy who was still wearing a Tina turner wig for some reason had sex with a stripper in my car. The rest of the afternoon and into the evening got considerably more out of hand.

    2) We have no idea how far or close Cameron lives from the school. For all we know the school is just around the corner.
    3) We are never told they are in a "super serious" relationship. Or have even been dating long. Ferris is impulsive which would be why he asked her to marry him.
    4) depending on where you live some busses take A LONG time to get home. There are also After school busses that take kids home that stay for extracurricular activities such as clubs and sports.

principal in the movie hit the sister's butt, shrugged off the dad (ferris) making out with the daughter (gf) thing and was convicted of child molestation later on. That guy also appeared in howard the duck as the bad guy. He had access to dozens of children while working and if this movie was so laissez faire about incest and principals touching students butts, its likely because the director and producers were pedos too. Hollywood has been trying to normalize this evil behavior for fifty years. At some point we, as a people, have to say NO MORE. No more statute of limitations, no more laws that make molestation a lesser crime than raping a full grown woman, no more judges giving only probation for abuse, NO MORE LETTING THOSE WHO STAND BY AND DO NOTHING GET AWAY WITH NO CHARGES!

And as someone who grew up throughout the 80’s and 90’s in the Midwest in a middle class family and spent a lot of time in Chicago, I relate to all John Hughes’ movies on a crazy level. The kids on the school bus at the end was a scene that was supposed to go earlier in the film. The scene would have been intercut with Ferris running home. The scene was scrapped. Then later editor Paul Hirsch suggested to Hughes that the scene be placed at the end of the film with the credits so the audience would stay in the theatre and see the gag at the end with Ferris saying "you're still here?.. Go home" That explains why there are kids on a bus supposedly at 6pm.

They have a point about the bus. In the original cut, Rooney gets on it immediately after running away from the house to get away from Jeanie. It was supposed to be a shock when he shows up and catches Ferris at the door. You weren't supposed to still think he was waiting around for Ferris. However, they moved the scene to the end credits because they wanted to make people stick around to see Ferris' post-credits scene at the end.

The mysterious gifts in the house when Ferris’ parents come home is likely because of deleted scenes. Originally Ferrie and Jeanie had two younger siblings. -Both Ferris's parents seem to be in well-paying jobs, so between that and Ferris's persuasiveness, it's remotely possible that he could own that synthesizer.
-Sloane was worried about being caught by Mr. Bueller with no cover. With the giant shades hiding most of her face and the boys in the bucket, she was able to keep cool long enough (though how they all changed positions in that small space in less than five seconds....)

No, his movies are never from just one perspective-his talent lay in accurately depicting kids from poor homes, wealthy homes, nerds and popular kids, stoners and jocks, etc. He understood everyone, not just the rich kids, which is why his movies are still very watchable. Watch The Breakfast Club. Also, ignore Looper-this bit is complete bullshit.

+Brandon Wiesner have no idea what you're talking about dude. Dorothy b is right. some characters are poor, (Pretty in Pink) most are middle class. Although in Home Alone the family is pretty wealthy. Looper is complete shit.

I saw it at the theater in 86 when I was 13 and wondered how he managed to change clothes every few scenes. Time/space implausibilities exist in nearly every movie set over the course of a day so I tend to tune them out in general. The nice toys just reinforced that they had wealthy, yuppie parents who in the 1980's were being told to buy kids shit to makeup for leaving a generation home alone.

Not like that they don't. This wasn't some baseball or softball team coming back from a game. This was an assortment of different types of kids, male/female, nerds/trouble makers. Also they seem to be middle school aged. This was a screw up, but at least it was funny

I thought it was gloomy. Truth of the matter about that era was. That in the 80s there would of been absolutely no reason to take a day off from high school that's how great 80s high school was. So the movie began of balance with me. But I liked the scenes of Chicago. It's just in the nd. There would of been no reason to take a day off from high school 84-88.
