- This is my old radio-controlled model aeroplane engine, which has been sitting in a cupboard for a quarter of a century. I thought I would get it out and see if it still works.

Thank you for the video! My dad and I got a model airplane together that I now have with me at college. It runs using one of these engines and I have been hesitant to put it up in the air because I wasn't sure I could get it started again and was afraid of crashing. I went out and flew today after a long time not flying and it gave me the heart to go and get the necessary equipment to get my old gas model running. This video was so helpful in letting me see how to get it started!

I remember spending many happy afternoons watching that little engine bring about the destruction of many model aeroplanes, hopes and dreams. It never used to start as easily as that however. It is amazing that you still have all your own fingers.
Thanks for the video. A friend of mine gave me one of these engine and the only problem I could see was that it was gummed up. No problem with a few drops of fresh fuel. I'm really looking forward to running this engine. It might end up in a Sig Four Star 20. Thanks.
The OS FP 25 is an excellent engine. I have one from 1989 which still runs perfectly and one that is new in a box. I have many diesel engines too dating back to 1948. Never attempt to start a diesel with an electric starter. the compression is much higher than a glow engine and there is a risk of a hydraulic lock resulting in a bent connecting rod. It's best to use a chicken stick on a glow engine.

Hi. Great video. Thanks. I have an old vintage engine. The body is all gone. Its one from the 1950's . My Dad got it from Japan. Now how can I start it again. I seriously wana get it running. I dont know much about it. All I can see is it reads OS 29 . Can you please help me with it. Many thanks
Try one without an electric starter. Especially in cool weather.

I was wondering if you can assist me. I have the same engine (I think) attached to an equally old mascot training model plane. I looked on the OS website and looked at the pictures relating to the history of their engines and this engine is the closest looking going back to when I think I may have bought it. I know I only flew the plane twice. Anyway, it was then put at the back of the garage and eventually forgotten about. We are now 36 years on and for nostalgic reasons would like to try and get the engine working again.
Here lies the problem. As you can imagine it was seized as i hadn't even covered it up. Suprisingly enough it freed up with a little WD40. I stripped the carb section, lubricated and put back together. I cannot for the life of me remember how to set the engine up, ie, how far in/out for the air screw etc.
Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance... Regards.
Hi, I’ll try to Engine seizing is most likely due to the old fuel and oil gumming it up rather than corrosion. I expect it will need a new glow plug to run. On the carb, the needle valve screw - the large horizontal one - should be about two turns undone from fully in for starting. The throttle stop screw - the small vertical one - should be adjusted so that the throttle barrel is significantly open. The air bleed screw - small horizontal one - on mine is adjusted so that so that the length of the spring is 6.5mm. I’m not sure it will be that critical. As long as the settings are about right, the engine should run on new fuel without too many problems. Good luck!
How many laps have you unscrewed HSN and LSN?
What kind of glow plug was it?
How many turns out do you start with the needle valve. I’m about to get mine going after being benched for 15 years.
About 2 to 2.5 turns out. Hope yours runs!

What is the device you use to start the glow plug?
It’s an electrical panel - powered by a 12 volt battery and with output sockets for the glow plug and starter motor.
hmmm... bought mine in 1976. Not run since the 80's.

I would guess around 300W, so approximately 0.5 horse power!

Sounds legit, I have the same engine.
You can pretty much estimate power by looking at the RPM with a given prop. For some types, e.G. the old Graupner Super Nylon or Master Airscrew ones, there are charts around to determine the power needed to turn a given size at a given speed. Some are in the old Demuth books.
Careful with your fingers - seems your are playing it kind of risky there.
