Mitsubishi 4G63T: Everything You Need to Know

The 4G63T was intially designed as an engine for race use with Mitsubishi’s rally racing ventures, and it features an insaely strong design. Unlike other 4-cylinder engines which rev really high and produce very little torque, the 4G63T doesnt rev all that high and produces lot of low-end and midrange torque.
It has a massive amount of potential with aftermarket components, and producing over 400hp is fairly easy. At the peak of drag racing, you’ll find 4G63T engines producing upwards 100psi of boost and making huge power numbers.

Please can you explain when you said the stock turbo unit can't take anymore than 5psi boost after/over stock?
4g63t is a beast its a legendary engine to this day all this new engineering on 4 cylinders and the 4g63 can still handle so much power
Out of all the videos covering the 4G63T I've never heard anyone mention their tendency to snap timing belts and destroy the top end. If you don't change the belt every 40-50k miles you will most likely experience this. Other than that these engines are bulletproof.
with stock pistons thats actually not entirely true ... valve recessions in the top of the pistons mean 9 times out of 10 you're fine. Nothing will touch when the valve train sits between the valve spring lowest point. If you're revving the shit out of it when it snaps tho thats another issue.
Just imagine if Mitsubishi had kept developing this engine. Would be pretty sweet
They have the 4b tho… people are going crazy with them stock
it is a 30 year old engine design and still dominates for a 4 cylinder
I'm 22 years old. Hahaha
its 38* year old
The engine is like a 2JZ of 4 Cylinder
Yes sir. Gods 4 cylinder
@@garinakbar1907 YEP was about to say the same thing ..!!
I really like the amount of technical knowledge you put into these videos! Very informative. It would be nice if you included stock rod and piston hp limits.
I had 520hp on a mustang dyno for 5 years before I built the motor . Now car has 600hp
google it ...
Mitsubishi didn't drop the Galant they kept it but put in a 2.0L TT V6 which was in the 7th gen VR4s and then from 96 onwards they had the 8th Gen Galants which also had a wagon variation called the Legnum which has a 2.5L Twin Turbo called the 6A13TT and AWD (previous gens were also AWD) which themselves are monsters and are massive in Australia and New Zealand especially. Just thought I would throw that out there incase some people thought they were dropped all together.
Been bingeing your videos, I like the technical depth! Could you cover the Honda C or J series engines in the future?
Thank you for hitting on the waaaay overblown thrust bearing issue.
The thought behind smaller Port heads being better is that the port air velocity stays High giving better torque. I have a 20G on my 92 Galant VR4 and throttle response isn't bad especially compared to the 14b which is like breathing through a straw. Lastly there are a number of 1000+ horsepower 4g63s that do not use a Billet block, while the internals may be substantially upgraded the block itself is stock.
Can you please do one about the 6G72 (3000GT or 3rd Gen Eclipse) or the 6G75 Mivec please!! The 6G72 is severely underrated and has also seen 1000+whp & over 1000+ wtq too!! Along with how the Mivec is one of the fastest NA V6's at the moment with over 500 horsepower to the crank
Good video on the 4G63T! I’ve owned several and you hit pretty much all the major points. Well done.
Christopher Sparkman yeah right
@@madbrawler4398 . cars with the engine are pretty cheap my guy
Would love to see a detailed comparison between the LSJ and the LNF
The 4g63 will do whatever you want it to do when it comes to its powerband. It just listens to whatever turbo and cams you put on it, it can rev as high as 8.5k on the stock bottom end as well.
Built, I've seen 10.5k rpm.
turshin built I’ve seen beyond 13k
Few Issues with this Video.
- The Crank-walk issue you mention only happens on the 7-Bolt 1st Generation DSM's due to the main caps. This doesn't happen on the 6-Bolt / Evolution blocks, some clarification would have helped.
- The issue with the Evolution is the weak-ish forged connecting rods, this becomes an issue at 400hp, no respectable tuner will tune an engine above this, unless you have built the short block. This is not something "really easy" as you refer to it as. It will generally cost around 10K AUD, and that's a pretty mild engine build, using supplied core (Block)
- The 2G head you mention is not as good as the Evolution 7/8 head as more recent R&D has been proving.
- The Mentioned RPM range, whilst true in stock form isn't really something that's common in racing applications. Most race engines are producing peak power up in the 8-10K+ RPM range.
See better Rod Ratio builds such as the 2.1Long Rod, 2.0, 1.8, 1.6 (Destroke) builds.
- No mention of having to O-Ring the Head & Block beyond 800hp, this is a must or you will blow gaskets out the side of the block all day long.
Crankwalk only happens on the 95-97 blocks, 2nd generation dsms with the non split thrust bearings. 1g is 90-94. The 98+ had split thrust bearings and are WAY better.
Yeah they do tune above 400hp, there are evos and DSMs both out there at 500whp+ on stock internals. My eclipse had 620whp on the stock bottom end dude
Michael Covington my race truck is at 650hp stock engine with arp head studs and an MLS gasket. 32psi Holden hx40
@@RichRusso4218 I have an early 2g 7 bolt , engine build date Dec 94 , I have owned my 95 Tsi awd since new almost 25 yrs , it never walked and has never been opened up, numerous runs at the track and literally 100s of street
races over the yrs , still doesn't burn a drop of oil
@@jerrywhite9225 Never said it happens to all, had one that lasted me three years, bone stock at 500hp, only died due to a money shift on my end with a new dog box transmission.
would love to see a vid like this bout the 4g93
Do the 4b11t engine next
I would disagree on rev capability, the stock redline isn't what I would call low so much as average, however it also is not uncommon for people to go significantly higher with minimal modifications.
I have owned my 95 Tsi AWD since new original paint still, original engine untouched , doesn't burn a drop of oil , it's an early 2 g engine, build date Dec 94 , car build date Feb 95, and it never walked , still stupid fast , evo3 16g all the usual stuff
nice what color is yours?
The information in this video is on point. I have a 2g and a 1g dsms ;)
I got a 2g as well spyder🤙🏼 stock T25 turbo still
I love this engine, it would be cool to see the differences in engineering between this and the most famous Honda 4 cylinder engines
me and a buddy had countless talons with no crankwalk. One day my buddy bought an MR2 that after testing turned out to have crankwalk. we talk about it to this day, the horrible luck that a toyota engine had the 7 bolt dsm issue.
Solid video.
Could y’all do a video on the other engine for the eclipse/galant/ 3000gt the 6G72/75 from the 6g7 cyclone engine family or just the whole 6g7 family would be cool too
I just bought a 1st gen 4g63t Plymouth laser rs. Let's see what this baby can do!
The 7 bolt bottom end idea came from the Honda k series.
Perfect!
The 2.4L A853 block makes massive torque at low end. Stock from the factory same deal crank can hold 800hp and can easily built up to handle upwards to 1500hp as seen in the Red Sled. Transmission is the biggest limitation in the SRT4. But thanks to Liberty Gear and Realtuned we have a dogbox and billet internals. Can also be stroked out to a 2.6L by turning the crank and using 6 bolt rods.
Correction to engine code
Best 4 cylinder motor ever made , I own 4 of them . Awesome video.
What is the WRX STi and Civic Type R engine compared to the Evo X?
Great video
I swapped my 4G63 to the 4G64. Loving every bit of it, mated to a 6466. Hoping to swap to a 6870 in the future. 😈😈😈😁
Hey man, looking to buy eclipse g3. Would you say the 4 cylinder we be a better engine over the v6?
US spec evos had the 16g factory, people have topped 400hp with the stock Evo 8 turbo.
Also running the stock turbos at higher boost is a common thing now
Please do one on the Hyundai Sonata G4JS which they borrowed from Mitsubishi. And also what needs to be done in order to boost
Most people who are interested in 4gjs just have to browse the dsm forums. it was a popular alternative for a Frankenstein 4g63/4g64 motor.
I had makkinen 6 and mr 8 it was a pleasure owning them
Mäkinen, you obviously havent owned neither since you cant even pronounce lmao
They were in some fwd Chrysler corporation cars too.especially the k car platform(Chrysler LeBaron, minivan, dodge Aries,)etc
Are you aware that the "4g63t" you speak of were in use here, state side, before the cars you mentioned here?
Would've been cool to talk about the balancing shaft
Is it buyable to build a 4g69 with 4g63 heads and components or should i just buy a whole 4g63t?
Wow I wish this vid came out before I bought my 2nd car. Wow 4g63. My friend were all talking about SR5s and shit
I wanna 4G63T swap an EM1 longitudinally, it would be a hella fun daily
Just K series swap or something. No reason to go with a lesser engine when Honda makes better ones overall.
Absolutely do it. The horizontal design makes the tubing longer.
Maybe a video on 4G93T?
Its all about the blowstep antilag or you could just run sequential which is what i doyou standard turbo as the spool and a 20 as the main
Very informative
6;30 please can you explain when you said the stock mitsubishi turbo unit can't take more than 5psi boost over stock???
GREAT VIDEO, COULD YOU DO 6G72 ENGINE.
I barely know anything about that engine so I wanna see a vid for that too
This deserves more than 530 likes.
It’ll get there 😬
You need to do a video on the srt4 engine easily one of the best American 4 cylinder engines ever made stock engines know to handle 400-450whp an can make that power with very few mods other than a turbo
Is it the engine that hyundai put in the i30n?
I checked this video cause i am buying evo soon. But i didnt get my answer on Which models have 7bolt engine?
Can you do a video on H22
Im planning to buy a mitsubishi galant 1990. Eith 4g63 16 valve. Would tjat be fine as a project car?
I love mine, but Mitsubishi has started to stop making parts. Just an FYI.
You should do a video on the Mivec 4G92 1600cc engine.
I have one in my daily car which is a 95 Mirage Asti RX Coupe (same as the cyborg but not a hatch)
It's nowhere as fast as my Evo but I love hitting Mivec, makes me laugh every time.
I bought the Mivec mirage for $448usd lol
A lot of iron block 4 cyls making 1000hp, the 4G63t has just gotten a lot R&D.
The 4G63 closed deck design is what helps it tank a ton of boost
@@linchester8464 almost every single iron block is closed deck.
@@alexstromberg7696 the EJ engine isnt closed deck.
@@linchester8464 I also said "almost"
Lin Chester it’s not iron it’s alloy
What does he mean by a strong bottom end? Does he mean the cast iron block is really strong?
LNF ecotec and Honda K series would beg to differ......but to each their own. 4g is definitely in the discussion of best 4 cylinder tho.
I saw how one guy put in to suzuki esteem 4g63t, i want to do the same with my esteem :D
6G72TT would be a great topic
when will they bring it back?
what’s the life expectancy of a stock 4g63t? i’m looking at buying an evo but i don’t wanna fuck myself over by buying one with too many miles and have it blow up on me
Big question is. What is its l/100km?
Very good video. Please do the EJ series engine for the Scooby fans!! 👍
It's on my todo list. Thanks for watching!
Can i fit this 4G63T in Mitsubishi pajero swb 2003model?
Just would like your input are theses engines hard to rebuild and I have a friend who's selling a 95 eclipse with a for couple Grand car starts but I believe I'm going have to redo all of his work to get running correctly time is not a factor do you think I should get it or????
Check out the dsmtuners forum.
Please help me sir i ask something about 4g63 8 gen and 7 gen crangshaft it is desame or not? Please anybody help me
❤️ my 88’ JDM RHD GVR4 (EVO-Zero)
Had a evo2 then evo3,
Evo3 had slightly better turbo, higher comp pistons, but evo3 suffer ring land falure.
Had a 3 puck clutch on the evo2 had know issues with the crank walk nonsense 👍
I got a evo but I think the k20 from the rsx type s or civic type r or jdm integra type r is better.
do honda l15b7
Can i ask which evo started using 7 bolt ? Same with the differend heads?
All evos are 7 bolt. All use the better small runner design head. Evo 1 - 3 is essentially the same as a 2nd gen eclipse engine, but with better intake and exhaust manifolds, different cams, bigger injectors, and different versions of the 16g turbo. From evo 4 on, the engine was flipped to the opposite direction like the 8 and 9 in the US. The turbo was changed to twin scroll, the boost was turned up, and even bigger injectors were fitted.
'Today I'm gonna tell you everything you need to know about the 4G63.'
*up to speed theme plays*
Reminder that someone managed to make an Evo 9 with a 4G go 2100AWHP as a STREET CAR
The Extreme Tuners of Greece right?
Being a street car dont really mean much at that power level it probably drives like shit on the street
@@bboyjohnanytimesoon4862 Those guys are full of shit, dont believe anything they claim.
Didn't the 1st Gen Hyundai Elantra get the 4G63 of some sort?
Yes
Different 4g9x and 4g6x series?
1:05 that launch tho
price motor ?
B16? B18? K20?
❤️my 4g
The first vehicles to feature the 4G63T engine were the Mitsubishi Starion and the Dodge Conquest, both rear wheel drive with the engine mounted straight ahead. Race versions of the 4g63 hit 10k RPM's typically. That's about as high rev as you get in a 4 banger car engine.
Anyone tried using the 4d64 for mods?
Dope!!
Awesome.
how bout 4g93T????
Who's here after watching Devin use the 4G63 lower block from the Eclipse for his Evo 9?
Do Nissan SR20 series plz
Eagle talon, all stock jdm engine and 16g turbo with 15 psi was Honda worst nightmare
Can it be jammed into a Mirage as a sleeper?
No
Can this engine be mounted longitudinal and run it only RWD?
Ya lots of people have , starions , conquest, there are even a couple of 7 sec 4g63 swapped Fox bodys out there
Really? What transmission can be used on this engine so that it can run specificaly rwd?
You should compare subarus flat 6 to Porsche's flat 6
The 4G63 T in the eclipse and Tallon was weaker than the Evolution 4G63 variant plus it was placed on the Right hand side of the car vs the eclipse being on the Left
Wrong, DSM's are the same setup as a Evo 1-3, when the Evo 4 came out that is when the motors were turned around.
Yeah you missed the transmission issue in the dsm's
Great engine but not for endurance if has stock turbo... Ive seen the evo just slept away from 1st to 3rd place in 3 laps...
Turbo lag i think is the problem when you go on a track... Great engine for strolling but for a track for more than 3 laps it aint gonna finish first all the way
When you go NA you have to sacrifice weight to make power. When you go turbo, you NEED the strength to make power and those stronger parts usually weigh more. But what is more important to you..?? You want the power right ...
The evo 7/8/9 variants rev well. So that point is less valid, unless comparing to say a b series honda...
I ran 31psi on my stock 16g made 412hp430tq on a mustang dyno
Small 16g??
Can you please make a video comparison of 4b11t and 4g63t
Thank you
It’s already on the to-do list. Thanks for watching 😃
Spoiler alert: 4b11 wins
@@nwbklr not according to the fact all the fast cars use the 4G63 in drag racing , check out the the list for the Top 10 Quikest AWD Mitsubishis , every car on there is a 4g63 , not one 4b11
Spoiler, only one of them was forged in the most grueling of motorsports, the other is a joint Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Chrysler designed engine with no pedigree
@@jerrywhite4764 Actually there's an Evo X that ran an 8.1sec quarter mile. Fastest 4b11t right now. Look it up, "Grade A Garage Evo X". It actually beats out a few 4g63 powered cars for top 10 Fastest Evos. Another one to check out is "English Racing Evo X".
I believe the fastest 4g63t is a DSM "The Red Demon" built by Boostin' Performance. It recently ran a 7.1 in the quarter. Mind you, it's taken the 4g63t 30+ years until it's run a 7.1sec. quarter. The 4b11t has been out for 11ish years and it's already running an 8.1 in the quarter with a heavier chassis.
Food for thought.
Spooly boi!!!!
Im dying XD!!!
Love my evo 8!
So there's no definite reason for crank walk? Is there anyway to prevent it?
Dont crank the car over with the clutch pressed in
@@hatchet157 so leave it in neutral and crank?
Yea try not to leave the clutch depressed for extended periods aswell at lights put it in neutral. I have almost 190 000 km on my stock evo 4 motor.
@@hatchet157 thank you
@@mr.sennin7923 no problem. Also this mostly applies for a evo 4 motor. later iterations crankwalk wasn't really a issue.
If crankwalk is blown out of proportion, then I must be unlucky to have experience it in 3 different engines. Had to rebuild all of them. Experienced it a second time in one of them. 7-bolts are a no-go in my book. Better to Frankenstein them together. Take a 7-bolt and a 6-bolt. Take pieces from each.
Yeah i agree. Crankwalk has been the biggest problem with the 7 bolt. The good news is several engine builders such as Jack's have done a lot of research on the problem and have successfully fixed the issues associated with the 7 bolt.
I opt to take out the oil squirters that cool the pistons. These get stuck open causing oil pressure to drop.
Then I must be the luckiest guy, have owned my 95 tsi awd since new , and it never walked on me , original engine still
@@jerrywhite9225 Then you probably aren't racing it like we race them. We're not talking a measly 150-200 hp where walk exists...we're talking 300+ HP with demanding tasks put on the engine. Drag racing, drifting, street racing, time attack, and hillclimb.
@@SelfmadeIllest so...how are you preventing the pistons and rings from getting too hot...or do you drive like a grandma? Most people don't have oil pressure issues if squirters are stuck open (assuming you have ones that aren't compression/diaphragm driven in the first place). Even stuck open, there should still be the same pressure because an increased rate of flow also means an increased rate of return meaning a MORE consistent oil pressure. The only time I could see that even remotely being an issue is if you don't have a pickup gate installed in the oil pan and you're taking on multiple G's of sideways force.
