How do we know it will be low cost? In terms of costs, seems this stuff can get expensive - The Soviets found that out with the Salyut/Almaz and Mir programs; and the US, Russia, Europe and Japan found that out with ISS. Actually, seems Skylab was the only program that managed to get pulled off on a shoe string and that almost went into the drink with the incident during launch damaging the structure.
As for reliable, remains to be seen. I suspect it will probably work out. They have had time to study other programs; have purchased know how from the Russians; and gained their own experience with prior temporary stations - the prototype Tiangong-1 and then the Tiangong-2.

They have a lot of smart people! They have less expense per capita on military and billionaires.... they are vastly more organized than we are and have long-range planning and co-ordination that we can't even dream of. They stress "real economy" where we stress whatever it is we stress... we work only for profit, some of them are working for the glory of China. They have better morale from a higher level of public safety and the general impression that things are going up and up, we are wondering where we're going and how we got in this handbasket for oh, a generation or two.... Ah, there's a lot of them? They might have as many people in school as we have workers all together? These are just the first few things that come to mind. I think there are others, which would be more controversial. One-Child Policy such as it was I think was a major contributor, even though it clearly didn't QUITE work! (Population would have declined noticeably if it had). They avoided the IDIOCRACY EFFECT by this. Demographics might be a problem for them in the future (you hear a lot about this!) but right NOW I think is a real advantage for them (you hear NOTHING about this!). Just getting started here! Food looks good and interesting and abundant, liquor looks horrible but cheap and abundant, I've seen a lot of videos about people eating a hearty breakfast and drinking hard liquor with it! "Breakfast Wine", we sure don't have THAT in Murica! How I long to do this, ONCE. Ah, they might say they have "The Mandate of Heaven", I don't know if that counts. It doesn't get much attention in the west, but I think the CPPCC and a consultative style of government is a BIG ONE. There's MORE!

Touch screen is dumb, one screen fails and you lose control for all of the systems. Each having their own button and switch would be better for redundancy, and also simpler is better. Big buttons also easier, more intuitive and user friendly, make this easier for Astronauts from other countries to use and remember. Big color coded buttons with simple self explanatory functions for all of them. Good design and very functional. No need for touch screen and other high tech crap which can go wrong easy. In space with lack of supplies and such high risk, the more simple and safe designs, the better. No need for complex over engineered designs just for aesthetics if not necessary.

Lets just put politics aside for a moment and think about just how far humanity has come since the first powered air flight in the early 20th century and today. And how much further we could go in a similar timeframe.
This station's interior looks futuristic and sleek. And what of the station that may one day be this one's successor? It could be even more amazing!

Are there pics of the actual interior anywhere? That's clearly a made-up interior in this video (not even a mock-up), all those buttons with no labels is kinda a dead giveaway.

It looks like a scene out of the original Star Wars movie.
Maybe George Lucas helped in the set design....
p.s. I love the balcony option.. Great for a space walk....at sunset of course.
