    Make a sauce with butter, garlic and a tsp to tbsp of sushi vinegar. Split the prawns down the belly and pull the shell away from the body without re.oving it. Let it marinate for 30 minutes or so. Throw it on the grill for a few minutes until prawns are cooked. Yum, yum. Can't beat it.

    Spot prawns, garlic, basil, olive oil, butter, and mushrooms. Sautee everything and pour it over spaghetti noodles. It is hard to go wrong with fresh spot prawns but this is one of my favorites.

    Here’s where the distinction gets relevant to the home chef. Shrimp live exclusively in salty marine water, where they transport themselves by swimming. Prawns, on the other hand, spend their lives crawling along the floors of fresh or brackish waters. The differing habitats place each animal into completely different food chains.

    do you ever use prawn for bait to catch the salmon? we use it over here in uk and ireland boiled dyed different colours such as purple..red..fished on a single hook under the float..sometimes freeline also..prawns are usually 1" - 2" in length ..very effective for atlantic salmon

    Not sure what advantage there would be to start reeling a large reel while still in the rod holder?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 лет назад +4

      Because you're trolling quite deep (200ft), there's fair amount of stretch between your rod tip and where the line is clipped to the downrigger at that depth. Most of these fish (pretty small as you can see), do not take the line off the clip when they bite, so the best technique is to reel as much as you can, to pick up all that stretch until the line is pulled off the clip, then pick up the rod to fight the fish once you are directly connected to it. Surely you can also pick the rod up and reel that way, but you're wasting a lot more energy in the meantime.

    Where abouts are you catching spot prawns? what are you using for bait?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 лет назад

      Howe Sound. Just the shrimp/prawn pellet bait which you can buy at most stores.

    pawn trap just set them like u would crab trap?! Anywhere shore access along Richmond would work?! Same kind of bait for crabs?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, except the traps are set much deeper (~200ft) so you'd need a boat for it. :)

    How deep and what kind of bottom are you looking for to get into them prawns?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 лет назад

      We had our trap at anywhere between 200 and 300 feet deep. I'm not totally sure about the bottom substrate, but I think it's mud.

      Check the DFO map beforehand to avoid the protected glass sponge reefs in the Howe Sound area!

    • @Broxty
      @Broxty 6 лет назад

      You want muddy/Rocky shelves at 200+ feet, usually if you go over 250 feet you start getting into squat lobsters. Use Carlyle catfood can with prawn pellets.

    So sad to see such small fish. I remember fishing with my dad for Chinook so much bigger then these fish.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  4 года назад

      MLC This is in January so you’re going to encounter high percentage of juvenile/undersized fish, whereas you are only seeing bigger, adult spawning migratory fish in the summer. With that said, yes the trend has been the downsize of adult fish as time progresses, due to selective size harvesting and changes in ocean conditions.

    Rod did u pull out the vein?

  • @MrGotropic
    @MrGotropic 5 лет назад

    You can just call them Chinooks (or Spring Salmon). Winter Springs/Chinook is not a separate species of Salmon. Your just catching them in the winter.

    Where can you buy this in Toronto?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 лет назад

      Not sure. the commercial spot prawn season in BC is around spring time so that would be the time to look for them around Toronto if they get transported there.

    Rod, does the meat stay good even if you don't pull the heads off soon after catching them? I hear many people do that as it preserves the meat quality. Or is that not true?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  5 лет назад

      Definitely, if you'd like to preserve your prawns as long as you can, then removing the head is what you should do. We ate all these prawns within a couple of days so it wasn't an issue for us. personally I like to cook my prawns with their head on.

    "Oh I'm just going to grab one more" lol Rod! I'm not hungry at all now. Do you clean the poop vien out before or after cooking? Are you safe to suck the juice out of the heads?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  4 года назад +1

      I personally am not that picky when I am eating them on my own, so I don't really clean them. It's pretty safe to suck the juice out of the head, I think lol... I've done that my whole life. ;)

    Looks fantastic! Do you suck the head fat? I think that would be great with such fresh large prawns.

      I sure do, but I'm not about to film it because it doesn't look very elegant lol.

    Cool video Rod. How long did you guys soak those prawn traps for? I hear longer is better

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 лет назад +2

      They were soaked for about six hours. Longer the better of course, but at some point it doesn't matter as the bait runs out, so 6 to 8 hours seem pretty adequate for us every time.

    • @brandynkirk
      @brandynkirk 6 лет назад

      thanks for the reply. Keep up the awesome videos

    • @Broxty
      @Broxty 6 лет назад

      If you go over 2 hours you drastically reduce the scent in the water. We usually check every two hours then re-bait.
