    I started fishing for steelhead this year and didn't manage to hook one this season. Despite that i've learned tons and been able to appreciate the beauty of the river and a lot of respect for the fish. I find the best way to enjoy steelhead fishing is to appreciate that you are out fishing and for me the more times i get out and don't get a fish the more special and more appreciative i will be when i finally do get one.

    We all sat down to watch the video last night! I am glad you got your voice back and could narrate.
    It was well made, exciting to watch and informative. Although I didn't catch anything this year, it was just my first year and I learned a lot by just walking the river and casting many (many) times. Thanks for all your tips!!
    I even ran into Nick one time in that very spot where he caught that fish! And you're right about how watching others catch is just as exciting and renews your motivation to keep at it. The kids and I really enjoyed liked learning about the steelhead hatchery program and watching the huge steelhead being landed by the other fisherman.
    The other day we went trout fishing, my youngest kid caught a fish and lost it just as we're about to bring it into the net. He was so sad but to console him, my other son (7) tells him, "at least you got to hook a fish, don't worry, even Rod loses a fish once in a while." I think it's so cute that they learn so much from you and I hope they will come to appreciate how lucky we are to live here. We can't wait for the pink salmon fishing season and I hope you will have more on that later!

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  3 года назад +1

      That's awesome Sharm! I think out of all my followers, the youngest ones keep me grounded. I always remind myself that there are many kids watching these videos and do my best to make sure anything gets published is suitable for them. Thanks for always giving me these feedbacks and stories, they're really helpful and appreciated. When pink salmon season comes around and you are bringing them out to the Chilliwack River again, give me a heads up and I'll give you some updates. :)

    Hi rod
    Just curious
    I have been east for 25 years now.
    Does the Capilano still get a early run of Jack coho. Small males 3lbs .Doctors pool used to be great first light hole
    Usually, a short run
    Easter weekend was usually the prime time. Lots of fun on a noodle rod and great on the BBQ.
    Love your vids
    Miss the lower mainland fishing. Your lucky
    Enjoy every outing.
    Would love to see you do a vid on that.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 года назад

      Yep! There definitely still is an early run of coho in the Capilano River. I personally haven't fished it for quite a few years now as I now live a little further away, but I know others have done well in recent years.

    • @FishingwithRod

      It was an improved clinch knot, I actually almost never have a problem with it. This happened most likely because I had caught the first fish on it a couple of weeks earlier and never changed it since. Just carelessness.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Matt. Yeah when the body of water lacks predation from marine mammals and other pelagic fish, you’re gonna yield a big return of what essentially are lake-migratory rainbow trout. The only problem with injecting that many fish into the system is that over the last century it has impacted the populations of native species like lake trout.

    Rod thank you for all the videos. Really interested in doing some steelhead fishing for the first time this year. Are these spot secret spots? Or can you tell me where they are located on the river? Thank you, Dwayne

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  3 года назад

      Thanks Dwayne. I don't share the locations in the video not because they are secret spots, but because how productive the spots are really depend on the timing, river level etc, and I don't want to draw too much attention to specific areas. Also, the river is constantly evolving. After what has happened in the last few days, these spots are actually no longer there anymore, it's going to be a brand new river once water recedes. For steelhead fishing, my suggestion is to just walk the river from point A to B, cover as many spots as possible. Steelhead are not hard to catch, they generally will bite onto anything placed in front of them, but they are hard to find because the numbers are low. The more water you cover, the more likely you'll get one. Good luck!

    Hey a bit off topic here but im a new to fishing and planning on going to Alouette lake pretty soon here. My question is, is trolling the only practical way to catch fish there? Can you just cast some rooster tail lures in and reel by hand? Will you have any luck this way? Thanks great videos by the way very informative.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  3 года назад

      Either method would work depending on the time of the year. When it gets warmer and fish start moving into shallower parts of the lake, then casting and retrieving would be more effect. That said, Alouette Lake is a big deep lake and fishing in general is quite tough. If you are not limited to that lake, I'd recommend to give a few others a try as well. Hicks Lake would be on top of my list.

    Looking to purchase a net what kind is yours?

    • @FishingwithRod

      It’s a Moby net and I highly recommend it. The model I have is a fairly new one so it’s not listed on their website. It’s called the D&K Special and if you want to get this particular one, contact Don the owner/maker directly. The background info of this net can be seen at:

    The spot that your buddy wanted to fish looked the best 🤣 “thought we weren’t suppose to catch fish here” haha cmon man learn to read a run!

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  3 года назад +4

      lol Trey. I'll always be the first to admit that I am no expert when it comes to reading waters. I do have my own preferences when it comes what type of water I like to fish and would skip certain spots, but of course over time those preferences would evolve as I encounter more fish in new water types.
      Or, maybe I was just saying that to trick Thomas and blindsided him after one cast.... 😆

      For anyone under 16 like you, you do not need a freshwater fishing licence or stamp.

      More like an old knot that should have been retied. 🤣 I had caught a fish on it on February 15th (the first fish in the video). It broke off on March 1st.
