Gotta love it , nothing like fresh shrimp . I refuse to buy farm raised seafood from anywhere . Nothing but USA wild caught for me. I didn't know there were smaller shrimp boats . Thanks for sharing my friend .
I come from a long line of fishermen. Most of my family fished out of the Hopedale area or Lafitte. I got out of commercial fishing about 6-7 years ago. I miss being out there sometimes, but it’s a gamble. You gamble your with your money, and you gamble with your life whenever you go out. I have a uncle and a cousin who lost their arm on a boat. One was dredging oysters and one was trawling for shrimp. Both of them lost their arm by a wench.
Amen brother. That’s why I always try to out commercial fishermen on my channel. To tell their story and remind folks the work that is done to get their seafood
I worked on a shrimp boat here in Australia as a young fella. Pulling the nets and seeing the by catch was my favourite part. We definitely got some weird looking critters come up. It was actually a bit dangerous, a lot of biteys and stingys..lol.. it's definitely a art to pick shrimp.
The way of life for many in St Bernard. The Serigne Family is a staple hold in the industry. Glad to see Kim Jr passing this down to his kids. Visit St. Bernard. So many interesting things to do!
The shrimpers here in the gulf states never get the right price for their product. I had a friend who did the commercial fisherman thing for years. He said the prices they would get paid at the dock was nothing compared to what the middlemen would get paid for the shrimp. Yet they do all the work, but the buyers know that shrimp will only last for so long. My friend use to have people he knew who would buy shrimp for him for more than the docks would pay him. It's hard work, but you are the boss.
what you have here is sustainability from the harvester to the customer. no excessive fishing or over catching. No greed, just enough to get what you need and supply what you need to get by. This is how it should be up and down the chain.
@@OutsidetheLevees the last time I was there was when I was 16, that was 1984 and the Worlds Fair was in New Orleans. I'm betting the Parrish has changed a lot since then.
I've never looked down on any of the shrimpers around where I used to live. It was then and still is now a life where you won't be rich. You'll be filthy sometimes, but not filthy with money. Those were some of the best folks, a few could be rough around the edges. More so when catches were small and expenses stacked higher than stored nets. The ones I really liked to deal with would sell by-catch right off the boat by the bucket load. All sorts of small fish and crabs. Much of the fish would be dead from being out the water too long or from being at the bottom of the net. Basically crushed by the weight of the rest of the catch. Three dollars a mix bucket, you supply the buckets. Use it for filling the bait cages of crab pots, cut bait for larger fish. Crabs for sheepshead or drum. Occasionally you could get a bucket of head-on for about $8 a gallon. Seems high but at the same dock they were getting about $2.50-$4 a gallon no matter the size because the buy house knew he had a lock on things so he'd force buy cheap and then bulk sell high. Hence, had a decent enough boat to go out to meet the boats on the water, you could come gangbusters on the cheap. Anyway, it's not a job, it's your life. Anyone that says "just do something else." Those are the people that tend to complain the most about how they need to have student debt erased or that they're owed things just for being.
