    I like your alternator solution. We installed 4*170amp Balmar alternators on our Yanmar engines (2 per engines). Best thing ever. Produces 400amp at idle. We run the DC Air conditioning all night. No problem on our lithium batteries. We have 5kw of solar. In hindsight, you simply need to put as much solar as you can; get custom sizes to fill every area possible. Something is always shaded. How highest production is about 3300w (out of 5kw) and we average 2200w, about half of capacity, of production during sunny period. We produce about 17kw of electricity per day with solar alone. The DC alternators are great, no need for genset. We use the genset locker for our extra sails. Frigomar makes great product. We didn't go with their 'central' system because there is only one speed for the water pump. You don't want to be running a large water pump if you use only one air handler in your cabin at night. We have 6 AC onboard and 6 small water pumps. We reckon it uses less power to use only what we need. Ideally Frigomar should offer a variable speed water pump based on load demand. Safe travels.

      @@SailingSeahorse2025 we run 12v DC air. We wish we were on 48v but the boat was already wired on 12v. Our cabin has a 7000btu unit, it consumes 500w (air and water pump). When we set the thermostat at 28c (outdoor 31c+) and close the door; We can do a whole night with AC running in four cabins. When my kids take the initiative to have their 5000btu unit set at 20c and leave their cabin hatch open, they can almost drain the whole battery by themselves. It is really a question of how responsible are the users.

    • @SailingSeahorse2025
      @SailingSeahorse2025 9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow thanks 👍. You raised another question I’ve been wondering. I’ll be sailing mostly tropics. Do you think the whole boat can be cooled with 70,000btu or does it need 2x50000? In your opinion? Mission is to close boat up and run ac in both hulls for sleeping or no hulls and just saloon during the day..
      So this question is more based on btu required to cool rather than the power consumption. (I am thinking to start engines to get the boat cool then once cool turn off and use batteries to maintain the cool..)

    • @sebastiensirois8915
      @sebastiensirois8915 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@SailingSeahorse2025 we have a 46ft cat. we prefer individual units instead of one large central unit. If you have a 50,000btu unit and you want to cool only one cabin, you still need to run a water pump (to cool the AC) that is sized for 50k btu. Check the specs of the water pump but you could easily be consuming 1000+watts for the water pump only. We have 7k btu in the master cabin, 2*7k (total 14k) in the saloon and 5k in the guest cabin and 3k unit in the kids cabin. 6 units in total with a combined output of only 36k btu. Very far from 70k btu. Remember that these little guys are running off batteries. I am unsure how many hours (or minutes) you could run a 70k btu unit off batteries. From our experience the saloon could be a little bigger but the cabins are more than enough at 5k or 7k units. I would not want to run a 70k unit for sleeping in a single cabin. The boat is in Caribbean; hot and humid. I would entertain a central unit ONLY if they would supplied a variable speed water pump. Otherwise, you will consume too much power just for the water pump if you cooling only a small area.

Mesmerizing indeed in all her glory. Was the water warm like a sauna when you were soaking Eli? You both look so rejuvenated that I swear you have found the “fountain of youth.” I know I continue to say this but your Portofino is so beautiful and the engineering so precise that it will set the bar very high for any other manufacturer to compete with her. 😉 Stay healthy, happy and enjoy your exploring new places. 💗

    Great video and thanks for sharing! Couple of things popped out to me, first 80hp engines are way more engine than a 52’ performance catamaran needs unless it’s not really a performance catamaran. That’s and indication you might be motoring more than you think you will. Second make sure you confirm with the builder the power system they are talking about will not void the warranty on the engines. This sounds like a knock off of what Integrel is doing, but their solution comes with a guarantee & warranty.
    Hope all else is going smoothly with the build!

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Kirk, we certainly had 80HPs on the Leopard 50 (heavier boat though) although I don;t know if the weight difference is much between the 50 and 80 Yanmars - will check... WRT Yanmar warranties, Raffaele has already got their approval for his system. I will get back to you on the Integral comparison but there are significant differences in how it operates, I understand.

    • @sebastiensirois8915

      we bought a screecher and a wingaker (Oxley equivalent). We love our Wingaker, we used it 98% of the time during our ocean crossing, it handles 5 to 25kn. The only sail to have really. We weren't as lucky with the screecher; it doesn't really go upwind. I assume it is not flat enough. We have 46ft cat. We are happy with the jib/main/wingaker. We just need one larger sail for reaching. Get a reputable sail designer, ours didn't work.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Claudio, it does depend on the sailing you will be doing and how much you want to spend - how many sails do you want?
      DOWNWIND; The Oxley is really good if you are doing long distances and specially trade wind sailing - across the Atlantic and Pacific sort of stuff. You sail that without the main so is really trouble free for wind shifts and handles itself. Forget about the standard spinnaker (too much hassle) so decide between asymmetrical on Furler, Wingaker (I have no experience of them) and an Oxley.
      ABOVE 90*: The Code 0 would be good for going upwind and you do need a large sail for 50-90* off the wind in light airs.
      Eli and I are going to have the main, jib, code 0 and Oxley, we think!

    Well it's about Bloody time, leaving us all sitting on the Hook, waitin, waitin, Waitin for u 2 to get back, lucky were all patient hey!!! and we might just like u both. Love the Oxley, great colours, will it be utilised on Barefoot Exp 3?🤣. U both look so much more Relaxed since going home, really glad u had a magic time. But Alas it's back to looking after all ur special Friends. Bit concerned with the wattage consumption of the A/C, but saying that, having 2 x 7.5kwt generators covering that, it's just running an engine, when battery capacity become low. Having the 5kwt Alernators as well, I'm certain there'll be plenty to run all systems, I'm impressed with the Yanmar 80hp Engines, very reliable, east to work on and parts are available. Considering all this Tech, I'm surprised the pumps are small. Maybe have a couple in spares. I'm really interested in the Electrical stuff, an it seems Portofino are too. Eli what a deep dream, when I saw the lack of water, I thought maybe the falls are in some trouble. Did they divert the water? I paraglided on my 40th BD over the coast at Crescent Head NSW, what an amazing experience, I even had a Sea Eagle come check me out. Top landing John, Eli on her Bum.🤣 Thanks for sharing, Turkey is sensational. Please watch ur backs, with what's happening in the World re: Red Sea etc. Much love, me 🇦🇺😍

Watching the Red Sea and considering alternatives if necessary eg land transport to above Yemen...

    For the price of those 4 alternators I would rather have 2 10kw electric motors and have a hybrid setup. The electric motors are alternators also and can regen when sailing. Can the alternators regen while sailing? I think I heard 40kw battery bank size. I would go with 60kw. Those hot muggy nights you don't want the AC's to stop at 4am you want them to make it till sun comes up or you wake and start 1 engine. Inverters use power to convert. 40kw will loose 5kw during conversion in a day or real close. I have 2 inverters and they use 2-5kw a day total converting depending on the loads.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi DC, thanks for those great ideas. The 10KW generators are significantly more heavy and disporoportinately costly. We are planning to have regents and are looking at hybrids but they are about $19K each too! having 60KW would be nice but again costs more weight and cost - we will have to make those calls before the build is finished....

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 10kw hybrid electric motor. starting a diesel just to enter and drop anchor isn't needed when you have electric motors also. I do agree 1 diesel engine is needed.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comments DC but we are finding the exorbitant price for the hybrids, the significant extra weight and the limited distance you can motor, makes it VERY impractical...

    • @dc1544
      @dc1544 8 месяцев назад

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I disagree. Hybrid doesn't add much weight its the batteries and most now are getting 40-80kw of batteries for house banks anyway. Then adding solar is huge. so when sailing you can regen power into batteries. even on a 5 hour sail to move anchorages if you can achieve 8-10 knots you can put 8-20kw in power into battery banks and use 1 kw to anchor and up anchor combined. no wind and you only going 10-15km away you could go silent with electric motor and if its sunny hardly use any battery amount. Spending $14-20k for 4 alternators is 1 electric motor. Saving on oil changes and diesel is huge. I will follow the Wynns on there new HH44 hybrid and see how they do. Also the couple with the new trimaran have hybrid so I will watch them also and they only have 1 hybrid so their electric is a backup when diesel fails and it did which is odd since its brand new and water got into engine of Yanmar. So again those electric motors can save you

      The other thing we found out was that those diesels that Hybrid Marine use are very high carbon emitters which do not comply with EU standards as they only get to L2 emissions and the Yanmars emit 1/4 -1/8 as much at L4 emissions... Hence we are trying to look at hybrids with the Yanmars...
