    Loved the insight to your options once your Portofino has been completed, the Maldives’s and Seychelles sound the perfect place to start the next chapter. If you headed east you could still take in and cruise through South East Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines before heading up to Japan then perhaps Hawaii. This will depend on the seasons as you will be looking to avoid the Typhoons. If it’s not pirates it’s Typhoons the joys of sailing the world 😂😂😂
    Awesome gadget for putting ropes onto mooring buoys, life can be simple when you have the right gear, loved your lesson on manoeuvring. Looking forward to your next vid, keep up your excellent vids. 😊👍s

    You've really sold me on sailing Turkey. I had no idea how wonderful Turkey is! I guess I've seen too many movies with bad dudes with guns in the desert.
    Excellent video. The Portofino folks seem to be making great progress.
    I don't think I would worry too much about the Houthies. They seem after bigger targets. and you'll be out of range of them in just 1-2 days or so. I'd be more concerned about the pirates off Somalia and the orcas when leaving the Med. Just my opinion. You're closer to the situation than me. Listen to your gut. Probably a good idea to visit the Maldives and Seychelles now, as once you head west, it'll be years and years till you get back there. Nahoa had some really good videos of those places, if you haven't seen them already.

      Yes it will be fantastic to get to the Maldives and we will see over the next year how the Red Sea is. We were hoping to get to the Cannes Boat Show in Oct 2025 but if we choose to avoid the Red Sea we will do the big sail around to the Caribbean abdn probably get to the Annapolis or Miami shows... 100% agree with the bigger engine choice, very small weight difference and the extra power is great when you need it the most. We did the fuel burn numbers on our new build and the fuel consumption was pretty much the same and the engines are working way less. Nice work guys its exciting seeing your vessel develop!

    Oh my goodness! The water around Santa Claus island is breathtaking! The clarity was unbelievable and I would have been tempted to drop the hook and never leave. lol 😊 Thank you John for the mooring ball explanation. You made that so simple to understand and answered all my questions. I can’t wait until the updates with video on the Portofino. If they are attaching the hulls now does that mean the boat has been flipped? Is it sitting upright for this attachment? Please be careful when sailing in or near the Red Sea. It is so unstable and I worry about your safety. We wouldn’t want anything to happen to you both so please error on the side of safety! Take care and thank you once again for sharing your journey. 😊

    Fantastic episode as ever! Good on ya! I am so glad you are using radio headsets to communicate with each other. I wish more sailing couples would do this as clear communication is VITAL in dangerous areas. The idea that a few hundred dollars could be the difference between a safe crossing and a total loss of the boat should be a no-brainer. Portofino is looking amazing, too. Looking forward to further updates. Happy sailing!❤🙏👍

    About this route, there’s a lot more to it. As we’re planning from Poland to Dubai, the other way around we’ve been investigating the possibilities and issues.
    Going to the Med is nice but you cannot stay longer than 3 months due to visa, unless you get a nomad visa.
    As for the Red Sea there’s still issues with piracy in Yemen and Somalia. Still doable, but when you’re almost free to cross the Atlantic you must pass orca territory. Which is a huge issue with 250 attacks last year.
    Hence when the USA is your destination I would really consider Dubai, the Maldives, Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, st Helena, etc in direction of the USA that’s a great sailing area.
    In that route the only thing to fear is weather and a few reefs.
    Just my five cents.

      HI Walter and thanks for the 5c! Very interesting and unusual route from Poland to Dubai! Not a common passage, I would image!!! All those risk add to the complexity and weather down Madagascar and the bottom of Africa and the distance - quite a way to have to sail... It may well be the BEST way though and be a very good shake down cruise fo the new P52!!
      Good luck with your passage and when are you doing it?

    Another good episode with some lovely water Eli. There are 6 boats transiting the Red Sea at the moment with about that many having already completed the passage without incident. (Apparently lowly sailors are not the targets). I’m pretty sure your insurance company will run for the hills if you’d attempt to make a claim though 😳. Let’s just hope the world has taken a chill pill 💊 by this time next year and we’re all loving each other again 🤞

Yes that is something that we will need to consider closer to the time but not having insurance on a boat of that value would be a concern, even though I sailed without cover for several years in Indonesia as we could not get (reasonable) cover... Hopefully that may have settled by then but if not, perhaps we go around Africa and head up to the Caribbean.... We will see!

    WOW another great episode John and Eli!!! The 52 is looking great - needs a coat of paint however! 🤣On such small engines with low horse power such as the one's you are using, do they still require a flexible marine coupling to the final shaft? I was thinking of all the changes in thrust when you were showing examples of how to manoeuvre and it caused me to think...As you know, often couplings are used to help with alignment. I'm of the opinion that Rafaele's experience and attention to detail will negate such an alignment issue, but vibration and stress on the engines is always a concern.
    I love that area you were visiting this week. The walkway ruins seemed to have every single rock 'circled', do you know is there any reason for this? Or is this part of the construction technique I wonder? As to the sailing route, I guess you will be watching the news with great interest over the journey south and evaluating things as the year progresses. Would you and Eli be against sailing south from the Seychelles all the way down and around South Africa if things do not get better? Even with all 'SA's' troubles it would provide reasonable places to keep provisioning for fuel and food. I hope you guys don't 'prune' to much with the wonderful Turkish waters. I'm looking forward to next weeks instalment eagerly! Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.

      Thanks Garth and on the Leopard the sail drives seem to manage the forward to reverse changes quite easily. The change from forward to reverse is usually not too fast but in the event of a collision avoidance we have sometimes done it fast and not had any trouble so far (although infrequent)....
      Yes at this stage Africa is looking more likely but a long sail that we were hoping to only do later!

    Calling out conditions while at the bow with "here" and/or "there" necessitates the helms-person divert attention to the person making the call outs. Often the callouts must be completely ignored to focus on charts, sonar trends and depth readings. Not until there is panic in the voice would the vague callouts get attention.
    Instead of "here" or "there" a direction and distance allows the helms-person to paint a mental picture whilst looking at and comparing charts and sonar treds. Relative direct (11-oclock, slightly port, slightly left) works best. Distance doesn't matter, can be; little ways, danger close, feet, meters or the number of Johns laid head to toe toe (fathoms)

    The big problem is the narrows leaving ...its very narrow for big ships ...
    Is there any way of launching further down the straights..overland?
    Otherwise small boat pirates are more of a risk than Drones and missiles .. they are aiming for bigger targets .. they may have a convoy escorting system in operation by then.. as even the Chinese are feeling the pinch.

The P52 is too wide to put on the back of a truck, could go on the top of a ship for $100K to the Med or we bite the bullet and enjoy the 12,000 mile sail to the Caribbean and USA! We hope the world pressure will cease the problem but it seems to be too easy to launch these drones and entrenched attitudes in Yemen...

    I’d be shocked if you could even insure the boat for this initial passage, but hell no is the short answer, it’s not worth your life, we need you guys to keep making videos! 😂
    Also regarding the engines and the weight of the boat, please don’t do like the Ruby Rose did and not share what the actual launched displacement of the boat ends up being even though they said they would. It should be something that’s openly shared especially since it’s being marketed as a performance catamaran like the 1370…but when the real boat hits the water all you hear is crickets on this question.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Kirk, yes there is a lot of misinformation about actual boat weights. A new Leopard 50 weighed in at 27 tonnes as they sailed away with aftermarket but before fuel and long term supplies which is a bit scary.... Looking at the different boat performance figures, even the HH44 of the Wynns does not seem to do even close to wind speed at the ideal angles and pushed hard by the professionals (as shown by their nav gear on the videos) which is interesting.... So it seems there is a lot of hocus pokus!

    • @kirkb3473
      @kirkb3473 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 By chance do you remember when I strongly recommended you make sure you have the displacement written into your build contract? There is misinformation, but there are even more uninformed buyers. Our builder guarantees the lightship displacement and it's in our contract. When you did the video on polars and boasted how the Portofino 52 has better performance on every point of sail than a Balance 526 that weighs 10,000 pounds less, I just get a little nervous for you guys that you are going to be very disappointed. You just can't get around physics, and the numbers just don't add up for the boat to be considered anything close to a performance cat. This is why I'm hoping you'll be transparent with your subscribers and RUclips audience to share what weight your boat really splashes at and then go back to your video on polars and compare real world results to what they gave you to convince you to buy their boat. Don't get me wrong, the Portofino looks to be an amazing cruising boat, but it's going to be similar in performance to the Garcia ExploCat we were anchored next two a few weeks back...same sized aluminum catamaran as yours, and it weighed in at 23T, do you really believe the Portofino is going to be 5T lighter (the Garcia is 20,000 pounds heavier than a Balance 526!).
      The HH44 that the Wynns have is the OC version, not the Performance Cruiser option. The boat performance is on par with a Nautitech 44/46 because it's essentially the same boat, so nobody is really surprised at its performance so far. I do think the boat looks amazing as will the Portofino 52. The production cats like Leopard and Lagoon are notorious for not being remotely close to their advertised displacement Good, luck with your build, enjoying following along!

      @@heathersmyth3517 HI Heather, yes we have shared the draft in earlier videos because it is an important factor for our desires. Thew Portofino 562 will have a draft of about 2 feet or 70cm. This means we can sail right up to the edge of the water, put her on the beach and sail / motor up creeks, river or mangroves to gt our of storms and hurricanes.... We can also sail over reefs at high tides and get to the inside of atolls while fixed keep boats can't. Most folk are not aware of the huge benefits these options give you which is why we wanted lifting centreboards and rudders. Most of the performance cats with daggerboards have deep rudders that prevent beaching and keep their draft deeper...

    Under no circumstances should you go through the Red Sea! Going through the Red Sea is not worth the risk, even if they have resolved their issues. Yemen is looking for hostages so they bargain with Western countries. Don't forget Somali pirates are still active and you still have to pass close to Israel and Egypt, Egypt's government is not stable. Enjoy South Africa, plan your passage to coincide with the sardine run and do a safari. Again, there is significant U.S. Naval activity going on in the Red Sea and Eastern Med and you do not want to get caught up in any of this, and it will not resolve itself in the next year or so...
