It was really painful to see that horse in such miserable shape upon his arrival. Those pictures of his ribs and what not really pisses me off that the former owner let him get so far gone. Horses are beautiful majestic creatures and they deserve better!
He is an old horse. Old horses have a hard time keeping their condition. I am not saying that this is for sure the cause for the way he looks but a real possibility. I saw a video of Secretariats daughter Terlingua the mother of Storm cat she was very well cared for and loved and well into her 30"s and she was also very thin.
@@beckyshell4649 You're right. The fact his coat is shiny and otherwise in pretty fair shape lends to his age. Its hard to keep weight on a thoroughbred anyway add age and it's a battle. She said he had a problem with his teeth when he arrived and that's the likely culprit. Most likely having his teeth floated has improved his condition. I have a Secretariat mare. Shes 14 and has trouble holding her weight. Shes a great granddaughter with Secretariat in both her sire and dam. I'm looking for a forever hone for her. I rescued her from slaughter. Shes tattooed and confirmed by it, her markings and pedigree from the jockey club.
The horse wasn't that bad... & owner found them a better place. That's doing the right thing. They clearly say the horse had health issues, including worn teeth. Old horses often have problems eating with worn down teeth & need special more expensive feed. Seems they were doing right by the horse to re-home. Many might just euthanise or fail to recognize they can't handle things.
Money made off the backs of these divine creatures and then too see them tossed aside hurts my soul. Thank you for being a role model and a voice and lifeline for these horses. They deserve so much more. I rescued a blind beat up thoroughbred myself. It turned out he had kissing spine. He lived happily retired in my string to age 33. Bless you 🐎♥️
True that look of secretariat it same face. A gifted person who knows horses need to have this horse know how to handle a blind horse some trainer he make a wonderful horse.😊
And he also had Secretariat's sweet disposition. He is so beautiful even in such bad shape as he is with this ribs showing. What did these previous owners do to him to where he's lost his sight in one eye? That really pisses me off. What the hell is wrong with some people??? They are just MONSTERS !!!!
He actually is not so bad. Older horses especially thoroughbreds tend to have problems holding his weight. She said he was in bad condition when he came due to a problem with his teeth. The original owner reached out for help. The teeth were the likely culprit and expensive to have floating done. The fact his coat is shiny any has muscle mass lends he was fed but not gaining fuel to his problem chewing his food. It's common in older horses and keeping weight on thoroughbreds is difficult add age and it's a battle. I have Secretariats great grand daughter. She bug red white blaze and one with sock on the front. Shes 14 and was rescued from slaughter by myself and my daughter. She also has a tattoo and was matched with it thru the jockey club. I am currently seeking a forever home for her.
Hes absolutely beautiful. Just like his father, he's lovely. I am glad no matter what that you rescued him. Same markings, they're so beautiful. I was never into horses until just recently, at 55. I saw the story of the legendary Secretariat and have been hooked ever since. I was only 5 when he passed away, so hard to believe. Better late than never I guess
He really is. There is a major problem in thoroughbred racing if an offspring of Secretariat falls into such condition. There have been various disgusting examples in recent years.
Horses are so majestic...........GOD loves horses......read how he describes them in Job.....also, in Revelations the LORD JESUS CHRIST will be on a white horse.......
He was not deaf. She was talking, he knew where she was. No need to jerk the stud chain at all. I don't know why people think thoroughbreds should not be given ground work to learn basic manners BEFORE they are ever trained to saddle. Yes they are hot blooded. But that just means it must be handled by someone who understands their intelligence and is prepared to teach them in good way. There are different schools - pick the one right for your race trainer, right for your horses. Is there a good reason this is not done?
Just being the son of Secretariat making special, Secretariat isn't alive anymore but he lives in his offsprings, how ppl are so cruel, no compassion at all. All animals in this world deserve care and compassion, we share the same planet, it maybe there's no other planets as Earth, we are alone in the universe, think about it! Let's protect and care what we have, once it's gone it's gone.
Secretariat died in 1989 and since he would have live-covered his mares, his offspring would be in their 30s by now. That is VERY old for a horse, about 98+ years in human age ((30*3 years)+8 for the youth of the species accelerated aging process compared to humans). Older horses require more attention because their teeth are usually worn way down and require more dental care. They get wasting diseases, like Cushing's Disease, which requires expensive medication. This horse would be all hairy if he had it. So, getting old is difficult if you're a horse, just like it is if you are a person.
And as of January 21 2022 there was still 2 of his offspring still living, Border Run -34 and Trusted Company -33, their birthdays both were January 1, the source - Paulick Report

Typical of the racing industry... if the horse doesn't prove out, then he's cast out. But many don't make good 'pleasure' horses due to their high-strung bloodlines. This horse seems very calm, much like Secretariat himself. I'd love to have had him at our farm...

Don't know where you got your (incorrect) info, but -- In 16 years at stud, Secretariat actually had 663 named foals (registered with the Jockey Club), including 341 winners on the track. The 663 would not include a small number of test mares, and possibly not foals he might have produced with sport horse mares. In the era when Secretariat went to stud, top stallions covered about 40 mares a year, but that changed during the '80s and '90s. These days, they cover FAR more than that. American Pharoah bred 208 mares his first year, 214 his second, typical for top of the line stallions currently. Coolmore Stud, owner of undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify, is planning to book him 250 mares his first season.
Agreed but Kingston Rule was sired by the famed U.S. Triple Crown Champion, Secretariat, and out of the 1982 Australian Horse of the Year, Rose of Kingston. Kingston Rule ran and won the 1990 Melbourne Cup and set the race and track record for this distance at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne. Those records STILL stand. I backed it after reading about Secretariat on the morning of the race. ruclips.net/video/EpkNeon_qQU/видео.html watch the orange/yellow silks with red cap running 7th on the rail, most of the way. Enjoy.
