very informative video, at the end of the day, who cares what people think, embrace your hair and style of locs, no one can gate keep your locs, love your loc journey and the way YOU style your locs.
Had a hightop set for almost a year but grew my sides and back for over a year now and it’s finally gotten to point where it’s starting to catch up it’s about the a little more than half the size of the my longer locs I feel like in another year it’ll start to flow more. I have high top locs, about 10 months loc'd and generally these things don't bother me. The maintenance is definitely a bit more but so far I love my hair.
I started with high tops and im 10 months in... i started to grow my sides out in the start march of this year because of the volume issue. I saw some pics of my hair from other angles and hated how little volume my hair had on the sides compared to the front and back. The length situation was never an issue for me. High top locs can look really good especially if you get a cut regularly and keep your hair up to show it off but If anyone is thinking of starting locs and youre like me, someone who doesnt plan to put your hair up and just wants to let them hang, just start with a full head of dreads. Growing my sides out as of now hasnt been bad because my locs are long enough to where they cover the new growth on the sides.
@@airkage6008 my fade goes away in a week bro. That money adds up when getting it faded plus sometimes I don't feel like showing the sides and rather let it hang down.
@@mogulme6190 Idk man, it depends on wat your doing. Line ups? Doing a fade on your own hair? What about the back? Im not saying its impossible, but will take some practice = some time with bad haircuts until you get better
Man I had 2 sets of high top dreads my first set my dreads touched my shoulder in like 2 1/2 years my second set I took out cause they wasn’t done the way I liked them to be done now I’m on my 3rd set they’re around 5-6 inches I love high top dreads more convenient for me instead of full set and I could care less about the “hamburger meat” 😂 I’ll get a cut when I feel like it
Dope video.I have high top locks and have been fortunate to never receive any bias from the dread lock community. Truth be told I did not even know there where groups. Lolol
I’ve had my high top locs since 2018 and they’re now hitting the middle of my back. I always get a low fade or a drop fade that way my barber isn’t really messing to much with the hair that’s close to my locs plus a lower fade just looks more current. As far as styles when they’re longer you can rock different styles but I just two strand twist. All of those other styles promotes thinning at the roots
My full set is finally below my shoulders, but I'm about to go for a hightop style tomorrow, I feel like that style would fit me better make it easier to maintain my locs (although that new growth on the sides is going to be annoying I already know). That crap with pushed back dreads started happening to me😭Before I started getting monthly lineups my dreads started at my hairline, now some of the them are an inch back because of the barbers combing hair out of my dreads for that crispy line. Wish I had known to tell them just to follow my natural hairline.
I’ve had hightop dreads for four years, they are a foot and a half long now. Constantly debating cutting them but I’ve worked so hard to maintain them and the work has been done by me from the beginning even fading the sides. Hate that I’m so attached to them😂
This is part of the reason why I chose to start on a drop/low fade…so I have some of that volume with some of that space for a decent undercut. But let’s talk about the deforestation on the line of demarcation that can happen when you keep a faded set. Make sure you tell your barber to be mindful each time to make sure your locs remain intact.
My hair is just a little bit longer than yours (almost 4 years in as well) but I think I started with more hair. Loving my high-top locs but I did learn how to cut my hair during the pandemic. Fast forward 2 some odd years later and I’ve gotten really good a fading my hair & haven’t been to my barber since. When I did go before doing it myself I never got the top of my hair lined up just the sides.
Lol I'm doing the opposite. I had a full set down my back and I loved them but 1 thing I hated was how hot I always was, I'm looking forward to having high top locs, I love the way they look and they'll keep you cooler during the summer.
I’m at 10 yrs locs …imma restart with a wick high top …. Y’all need to understand your hair will take time to Balance out … you think it’s not growing but it’s balance in out … and only put cotton on your hair to dry it after a wash … keep proper scarf Square on you at all times to cover your hair …. And put it on in harsh conditions …. Get you some rosewater and spray your head daily or every other day but I cannot stress enough to keep your head covered !!! the elements , direct sunlight is not your friend and that will ultimately prevent your hair from looking its best
Mannnn I'm glad you made this video. I had high top locs for 2 years. I ended up cutting them a year and a half ago to grow my whole head out. Reason why bc barbers were cutting into my locs. Second reason like you said when you have somewhere to you have to do something with that hamburger meat lol
For reason 4 - do you have a video breaking down how you should line up or tell your barber how to line up with locs? I feel like mine is pushing my joint back lowkey 😭. Just got a cut last week but now I'm about to wolf it out for like 2 months
I got hightop dreads myself, and I'm one of those brothas who REFUSES to get a hairline taper ✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾 I personally HATE the look, it takes away from the entire dreadhead appearance, in my opinion, and I also have no plans to invest in the idea of a full set. I actually started mine out very skinny, in the beginning, but eventually, after some years, I wound up cutting out a good handful to combine them at the roots and make them thicker, a complete success, by the way 😁😎👍🏾👍🏾
Hey TPLOCKS, as usual it’s great to see you☺️your baby girl looks so sweet & has GAWJUS hair like you & your Mum. I must be honest when your hair is down, it does look like the whole head is locked. As you rightly say, for some people a full head, might be too much, I know it would for me as I perspire a lot. I just love having my back & sides shaved, I’ve done this for the last & years & it has given me a lot of freedom, it’s low on maintenance & dare I say I think it’s sexy /edgy. It’s not quite Jada Pinket Smith, but you know what I mean. If you were in the UK people would call you mixed race & call your hair mixed coz it’s very soft. My hair does shrink, even now it’s locked, I must admit I wasn’t prepared for it to do that. But with the aid of your videos & laid back attitudes to your locks, it’s rubbed off on me & that’s the attitude I now have. I know it will get longer & I just gotta be patient & love the journey. I swear you look younger in every video you post. So glad I found your video. 🥰
I have hightop locs down to my neck and get compliments everyday and women love them. 2 years and 4 months 🔥 They all look exactly the same once they reach Sosa length and longer. It’s just hightop may give you a little less volume depending on how thick ur hair is
I get compliments on my high top locs from the African American community I gotta be doing something right I haven't not received any negative comments or dread hiarchey
Even though I wish I had a full head of locks my high top locks gave me so much confidence I love them my hair is thick so when I wear it down can’t tell anyways and it’s just a easier look to roc
I don't have a high top situation but I do have a nape uncut, and I definitely need the patience cuz the length does seem compromised. But I'm committed. I'm excited to see where my hair goes.
I had the drop fade high top locs in for a year and 4 months until I decided to chop them and just grow a fresh new full set of locs. Im gonna do like how I did with the high top set and grow my hair for about a year before locking it up again so I have some time to enjoy having an afro before locking up again. But yep, I just feel a full set of locs would look so much better on me both with my hair down and in styles. High top locs are def fire don’t get me wrong especially on the right person, but unfortunately I’m not that person haha. Full set it is for me!
I have high top locs, and I live them but there is a part of me that do wish I would have started a full set cause of the reasons you addressed, by now mine would be touching my shoulders and it does feel like it's growing slower... right now they are just below my eyes... However, right now I feel, when they reach my shoulders I'm good, I don't think I want them down my back and so forth, plus at that point, I think, styles become more complicated
U spoke Truth about that hierarchy when it comes to dreads. I don't totally agree with ppl placing a value on someone else's journey tho... on the other hand, in some cases I understand it tho. Lol. Voluminous 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This the reason why 4 months into my journey, I stopped getting my sides and back cut and grew it out. I literally had to have top Locs and a Afro on the sides and back (undercut) until month 10. It was ugly looking but now I’m 1 year and 10 months in and I can finally wear designs using my full head. Im grateful I thugged it out really early in my journey. I feel like by year 3 I’ll really be in the game 💪🏾
i’m glad i read this man i got twist and was about to start getting locs but i’m gonna grow out the sides and wait until it’s long enough to coil to cut the top off too match the sides
@@An6re trust me so many people got high tops because it was a trend . Long term it's stressful for some people to maintain. It makes more sense to have a full set and if you want to cut the sides later you can
I never had this problem with my high top dreads and I’ve been growing em since 2015 but they grew past my chest so I had to cut em for a new start people barely knew I had a flat top
in the past I tried and tried and tried to maintain a full head of locs but it was too much work, so after trial and error, I decided on a hightop set and now nearly seven years later, they're creeping down between my shoulder blades and are actually longer than some of my coworkers who have a full head of locs
I started high too but started to grow the sides in pretty early! But I think I’m going to cut the sides again! I have a big azz head! I don’t need any more of volume fam! Longer top makes my head look slimmer… if that’s even possible 😂 and I like to cut my hair! So high top is best of both worlds!
I love my high top locs ive seen nothing but growth i startee mine in cosmetology school 3 years later longest my hair has ever been and on the plus side I have a lot of hair my locs are tiny average size so when down it appears as if I have a full set of locks anyway especially w/ out a haircut.. Btw I’ve never heard of social rankings w/ locs ive had people from Freeform to full heads locs and bald heads compliment my style of high top locs it appears cool
Preciate you throwing love to your high top at the end 💯 Do you have advice on transitioning to a full set from a high top without fully resetting and cutting off the locs you have?
Before I cut off my first set I tried high top locks for about two weeks. It was awesome but the maintenance was killer lol. I had spent the entire time up to that getting zero haircuts.
Man I felt this video. I always say if I had a full head my hair would be down to my a** lol. My high top locs go pass my shoulder to the top of my chest & my cousin grew a whole head and passed me in about 2 years 😡😆
I want to get a high top locs I had a fauxhawk loc set with the first set of locs I want a high top locs because with full locs my head sweats so much especially when I work and workout. I don't like that feeling of it Thanks for this video 📹 great suggestions 👍🏽
Maintenance wise it’s a bigger Commitment to having a CLEAN set of high top locks… but at the same time I can see why we would be second to last on the chart
gotta admit I m thinking to do the journey but with ‘Dermatitis Seborrhoeic’. . not gona lie i m scared of the itchyness already :p. Thanks for the vid
I mean I have a lochawk now so I’m gonna between however I did cut the the last back row yesterday, I kinda regret it kinda don’t but I’m gonna let that grow out and attach it to the ones that I already (and just shape up the bottom of it) have but the ones a cut off were so hard to grow and they were so loose compared the rest of my hair that I thought they’d never grow, they probably would if I waited. I still have my shaved sides of 5 yrs, never getting rid of those. I also felt like the bleach (they felt really hard compared to the rest of my locs and some of my thicker ones) in them was just stuck in 2 of the 4 that I cut and I just couldn’t get it out and when wash day came around I was always lazy and tired when it came to wash them since they were in the back of my head.
I definitely would like to take a picture of myself and tell me what you think of my high tops. Then again mines more of a dread hawk I’ve been growing for about three years in debating if I should go full
But remember this:
Your journey is that: your journey. Take it as you see fit and get out of it what you can. No one can a journey that they themselves did not take…and since they aren’t you, they didn’t take your journey.
Embrace it…and may your journey bear much fruit.

Damn People Really Despise HighTop Locs lol. I’m two years in and I’m not mad at all. I honestly love the Retwist + Haircut Combo🔥🔥🔥
Me too bro
@@airkage6008 my fade goes away in a week bro. That money adds up when getting it faded plus sometimes I don't feel like showing the sides and rather let it hang down.
@@kush7138 learn to do it yourself… I never understand dudes spending money to get something done that’s easily done yourself
@@mogulme6190 Idk man, it depends on wat your doing. Line ups? Doing a fade on your own hair? What about the back? Im not saying its impossible, but will take some practice = some time with bad haircuts until you get better
@@ce1474 I bet mogul don't even do his own neither up her judging a profession💀
Man I had 2 sets of high top dreads my first set my dreads touched my shoulder in like 2 1/2 years my second set I took out cause they wasn’t done the way I liked them to be done now I’m on my 3rd set they’re around 5-6 inches I love high top dreads more convenient for me instead of full set and I could care less about the “hamburger meat” 😂 I’ll get a cut when I feel like it
My high top gives me soo much confidence, edginess and style. Can't image anything different!!
Dope video.I have high top locks and have been fortunate to never receive any bias from the dread lock community. Truth be told I did not even know there where groups. Lolol
You have the moon roof bro 🤣
Hate that I’m so attached to them😂
The end is a new beginning gang
Another TP video?? Yes lawwdddd 🔥✅
Trying to keep it going 🔥🔥🔥
I haven’t had a line up In 6 months with my full set of hair. Good video bro 💪🏾💪🏾
You gettin em right with the knowledge bro!
@@TPlocks I got it from you bro!
This makes me glad I’m rocking the high top locs it’ll be less common In a few years
I have the mohawk dreads but i have to keep myself from cutting my hair to often 😂
Literally 109% everything you said was how I felt about my high top set I had in 2019 . Just restarted my journey 1mo in now with a full set
Thanks TP enjoyed this. 😉
Glad you enjoyed it family 🙏🏾
Love the videos man!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Appreciate ya fam!!
Can relate to that, with my Mohawk set
I’m at 10 yrs locs …imma restart with a wick high top …. Y’all need to understand your hair will take time to Balance out … you think it’s not growing but it’s balance in out … and only put cotton on your hair to dry it after a wash … keep proper scarf Square on you at all times to cover your hair …. And put it on in harsh conditions …. Get you some rosewater and spray your head daily or every other day but I cannot stress enough to keep your head covered !!! the elements , direct sunlight is not your friend and that will ultimately prevent your hair from looking its best
I actually love my high top best style I like being able to clean my up and look crisp when my hair is in a pony and the fade is fresh!
Facts 🔥🔥🔥 same here family
Mannnn I'm glad you made this video. I had high top locs for 2 years. I ended up cutting them a year and a half ago to grow my whole head out. Reason why bc barbers were cutting into my locs. Second reason like you said when you have somewhere to you have to do something with that hamburger meat lol
I would love a video on loc hierarchy
Your family is beautiful 🥰
For reason 4 - do you have a video breaking down how you should line up or tell your barber how to line up with locs? I feel like mine is pushing my joint back lowkey 😭. Just got a cut last week but now I'm about to wolf it out for like 2 months
I do have a video but I could be more detailed with it for sure. It's basically just me showing the process...not really explaining it.
I actually started mine out very skinny, in the beginning, but eventually, after some years, I wound up cutting out a good handful to combine them at the roots and make them thicker, a complete success, by the way 😁😎👍🏾👍🏾
what’s up TP🔥 good vid!
Sup family’ appreciate you for the love ✊🏾
2 years and 4 months 🔥
They all look exactly the same once they reach Sosa length and longer. It’s just hightop may give you a little less volume depending on how thick ur hair is
Do what makes you happy 🙄 I didn’t know it was this much extra shit 😭
I get compliments on my high top locs from the African American community I gotta be doing something right I haven't not received any negative comments or dread hiarchey
Even though I wish I had a full head of locks my high top locks gave me so much confidence I love them my hair is thick so when I wear it down can’t tell anyways and it’s just a easier look to roc
I don't have a high top situation but I do have a nape uncut, and I definitely need the patience cuz the length does seem compromised. But I'm committed. I'm excited to see where my hair goes.
Naw fr my barber messed my locs up, nicking my locs. They are so thin around the exterior but luckily theirs ppl who fix this issue. 🥹
Great vid mane
I had the drop fade high top locs in for a year and 4 months until I decided to chop them and just grow a fresh new full set of locs. Im gonna do like how I did with the high top set and grow my hair for about a year before locking it up again so I have some time to enjoy having an afro before locking up again. But yep, I just feel a full set of locs would look so much better on me both with my hair down and in styles. High top locs are def fire don’t get me wrong especially on the right person, but unfortunately I’m not that person haha. Full set it is for me!
To each is own... 🤣😂🤣 why should anyone care how someone is rocking they hair 😂🤣😂
Yeah mine got nicked alot. And my loc tech just disappeared so I'm going to maintain my own hair and cut my own
Everything you said was true, I got the hamburger meat right now🤣🤣🤣 but I love my high top locs wouldn’t change them for nothing
Omg look at babygirl💖
I was wondering if people had the same ranking I did! It’s definitely a real hierarchy
Tp last time I watch ur video u was at 10.k ur channel been growing congratulations main u be at 1 million one day
"Hamburger Meat" 😭😭😂😂 you extra ahahaha
This the reason why 4 months into my journey, I stopped getting my sides and back cut and grew it out. I literally had to have top Locs and a Afro on the sides and back (undercut) until month 10. It was ugly looking but now I’m 1 year and 10 months in and I can finally wear designs using my full head. Im grateful I thugged it out really early in my journey. I feel like by year 3 I’ll really be in the game 💪🏾
Tryna get like u still got they highly top but I’m like 6 years in I want a full ahead now bout to thug it out
@@keselaurent2790 just keep it short
i’m glad i read this man i got twist and was about to start getting locs but i’m gonna grow out the sides and wait until it’s long enough to coil to cut the top off too match the sides
@@An6re trust me so many people got high tops because it was a trend . Long term it's stressful for some people to maintain. It makes more sense to have a full set and if you want to cut the sides later you can
@@Andrew-ug2cy appreciate it i’m gonna start growing my sides now and jus trim the top🤞🏽
I’m 6 months in with my high tops
Good video man
I started high too but started to grow the sides in pretty early! But I think I’m going to cut the sides again! I have a big azz head! I don’t need any more of volume fam! Longer top makes my head look slimmer… if that’s even possible 😂 and I like to cut my hair! So high top is best of both worlds!
Lol my boy said a Pecking order!
I love my high top locs ive seen nothing but growth i startee mine in cosmetology school 3 years later longest my hair has ever been and on the plus side I have a lot of hair my locs are tiny average size so when down it appears as if I have a full set of locks anyway especially w/ out a haircut..
Btw I’ve never heard of social rankings w/ locs ive had people from Freeform to full heads locs and bald heads compliment my style of high top locs it appears cool
im already going through my journey with a high top, nle was my inspiration lol, on my second month and i think im doing pretty good
My last set was high top dreads and I cut them and recently started a full set
Any regrets 👀
@@TPlocks hell NO I had the same issue it seemed like it was not getting long so I grew my sides out and it was not good so no regrets
Preciate you throwing love to your high top at the end 💯
Do you have advice on transitioning to a full set from a high top without fully resetting and cutting off the locs you have?
I’m doing the same
Before I cut off my first set I tried high top locks for about two weeks. It was awesome but the maintenance was killer lol. I had spent the entire time up to that getting zero haircuts.
@@tajsimms8976 I never have to worry about haircuts ever, so it was a change of pace for me. I’ll stay retwisting though
I got high self esteem though idc what other people think when they look at my hair
You’re legit then!
I can truly say just embrace the journey I.E.- commit thats all you need to do and your locs will grow
I have a low taper but my hair is at the length where you can’t even tell I have a cut under
I’m thinking about a high top loc because I have much volume and I can’t wear hats or helmets when I’m riding my bike
Man I felt this video. I always say if I had a full head my hair would be down to my a** lol. My high top locs go pass my shoulder to the top of my chest & my cousin grew a whole head and passed me in about 2 years 😡😆
This is s good!
I want to get a high top locs
I had a fauxhawk loc set with the first set of locs
I want a high top locs because with full locs my head sweats so much especially when I work and workout.
I don't like that feeling of it
Thanks for this video 📹 great suggestions 👍🏽
as hightop for 2years- i would grow a full head then snip locs if you really want hightop thus you dont have to grow a undercut
Your locks are neat
Thanks =)
I’ve got it too fam! I’ve learned to manage it with my health and house of Isis products!!!
i cut my high top recently and im growing a full set
would you make content on how one can climb corporate ladder to highest degree? alot of ppl want to be entrepeanur but that journey isn’t for everyone
For sure I have a video loosely talking about it!
@@TPlocks gr8!,, i was just shooting ideas so you dont have be boxed as only a loc youtuber
