I think this is Metallica’s most underrated song. The bass line, the Black Album toms from Lars, the harmonizing guitars, the solo, the lyrics. It’s even more awesome live with the crowd involvement. The only thing missing is Jason and his badass backing vocals. Metallica is sounding so good in 2021!

My guess is that his voice started getting different due to age, and that he couldn't get used to sing in lower tones, that's why he does it better now.

He didn’t “lose” the iconic voice, he still does it from time to time on certain songs and parts of those songs, in the 90’s after the Black album he was checked and told that if he keeps doing the voice he’ll end his singing career
I was part of it when I went to the Orion Fest in Atlantic City (2012)... it was god damn amazing! I am also part of the only live crowd that got to hear Escape performed live.
I really wish I could watch Jason perform this with Metallica. Absolute favourite song from the black album, and I feel robbed that I could never see Jason perform it live with Metallica. Though seriously, no shade thrown on Rob.
I have so much respect for Rob. The songs that Jason and Cliff contributed to, he does so well in honoring how they were originally done. I think they need to have a microphone that's literally lower so Rob doesn't have to try to stand up to it. The mics are set for James, nobody else. Rob is shorter, so he can't get right on it as easily.
I remember the crowd (and myself) LOOSING it when they played this out of the bag at Melbourne, Australia in 2013. I legit cried during the crowd harmonies, was so awesome. There is a professional release of it on their channel.

In my opinion one of the best Metallica songs. The bass line (written by Jason) as the intro and basis of the song, the heavy riff over it, the lyrics, the interlude, the build up to the harmony solo of James and Kirk! Perfect!

WE PICKED METALLICA, We would run late for class only to hear the end of a song or an entire song and that meant even risking getting detention (i don't know you if you know what that is or if they still have it ) but it was fucked up, but we risked it anyway BECAUSE METAL WAS WORTH IT You need to learn the essence of heavy metal you need to learn your priorities in life You know how when the younger generation says to my generation "Man i wish i was around at that time it must have been cool" well.. this is one of those lessons , at the time we knew we would get in trouble but we stuck by metal and metal stuck by us and at the end of the day , some 30 years later, you realize you did the right thing so next time a premier is on................. WATCH IT , I promise you you'll understand the difference

As a teen learning bass I recall loving this song and trying to learn this as well as most of the Black Album. Metallica has been blessed with such a long and wonderful career and to have three outstanding bassists in their tenure is something many bands can only dream of.
My now ex wife and I were up front. You could see us a few times in this video. They played two nights that weekend, 33 different songs, no repeats. They played the entire black album but backwards. They started at the struggle within and played through enter sandman. Louder than Life 2021!!!!

When we had a choice of Metallica or School....... WE PICKED METALLICA,
We would run late for class only to hear the end of a song or an entire song
and that meant even risking getting detention (i don't know you if you know what that is or if they still have it ) but it was fucked up, but we risked it anyway
BECAUSE METAL WAS WORTH IT
You need to learn the essence of heavy metal
you need to learn your priorities in life
You know how when the younger generation says to my generation "Man i wish i was around at that time it must have been cool"
well.. this is one of those lessons , at the time we knew we would get in trouble but we stuck by metal and metal stuck by us and at the end of the day , some 30 years later, you realize you did the right thing
so next time a premier is on................. WATCH IT , I promise you you'll understand the difference

As a teen learning bass I recall loving this song and trying to learn this as well as most of the Black Album. Metallica has been blessed with such a long and wonderful career and to have three outstanding bassists in their tenure is something many bands can only dream of.

My now ex wife and I were up front. You could see us a few times in this video. They played two nights that weekend, 33 different songs, no repeats. They played the entire black album but backwards. They started at the struggle within and played through enter sandman. Louder than Life 2021!!!!
