    NOTE!: Since posting this video, we've found only a few selections are modifiable!
    MODIFIABLE: Pac Man, Galaxian, Galaga, Mappy, and Dig Dug. Even these may require removing epoxy off of the jumpers, which is a real pain! (Video on this coming soon!)
    NOT MODIFIABLE: Karate Champ, Burger Time, Bad Dudes, Ms Pac Man
    Please comment to add to the list of both Mod-able and NON Mod-able machines that you might come across.
    In this video, we find out if a Pac Man mini arcade has other games installed on the mainboard and if so, we will mod the machine to make them all playable!

    Just so people know, if you hack the hackable ones to play the other 5 games, you don't have to shut it off to change games. Just flip the switch (it will continue playing the game you were on), hit the reset button and it will change to whatever game you selected. No power cycling necessary.

    Just wanted to say it's great that you're doing this stuff with your son. As a kid I always tagged along with my dad when he would do little projects around the house. I'd ask questions, offer my (admittedly limited) input, fetch tools for him, etc. and I've got a lot of great memories from that. Taught me to have an inquisitive mind and appreciate being able to take stuff apart and figure it out.

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance

      That is exactly how I grew up...following and watching my Dad and him encouraging me to do so. Unfortunately, this led to most of my mechanical and/or electronic toys being dismantled by me and on many occasions never getting put back together in working condition. :) Thank you so much for your great comment!

    I just picked up a couple of these at my local Walmart. They had Galaxian and Bad Dudes for $5 each. I've barely soldered anything, but this video inspired me to pick up a second Galaxian (they were out of Bad Dudes, which has 2 buttons). My soldering iron isn't exactly precise, so I'm not going to tackle the switch or adding a second button until I've gotten a nicer one, but I did manage to turn my Galaxian machine into a Galaga cabinet. Very cool stuff. I'm totally saving this video for reference when I'm ready to add the switch. Also, hitting subscribe... Now.

      Nice score! Were those in the clearance aisle? I did pick up a burger time since it has two buttons, but found that there are no other roms on that machine. It is a higher color resolution, so is a game-specific machine. I'm going to bet Bad Dudes is going to be the same deal. We have not tried any other machines yet. Thanks for the sub!

      @@AlsAutoandAppliance My store had a little clearance section in the electronics department. They were in there. Most of the others were still normal price. Just Galaxian and Bad Dudes were on clearance. Thanks for letting me know about Burger Time. If I get that, I'll do it because Burger Time is awesome. Same with anything with a nicer screen.

      @@AlsAutoandAppliance I found more Bad Dudes and a Karate Champ at another nearby Walmart. Grabbed one of each and opened them, just for fun. That, and the Karate Champ had something on the other side of the screen that I wanted to clean out. I can confirm that your guess was correct. Neither seem to have other ROMs. Their boards are similar to each other, but different from the Galaxian board. Also, the individual parts inside aren't modular. You'd need to sever connections to disconnect the screen, etc.

    probably already mentioned earlier but just to let you know, with Mappy you jump automatically onto bouncing area...and will not jump off bouncing area until you press left or right. Also, you are temporarily unkillable while bouncing up and down....and you can just sit on the bouncing area for a while to decide which floor to get off (again, no jump button to get off, just left or right). Also when opening doors it can kill/stun enemies by knocking them back.

There are currently only 2 games by Taito for the MyArcade series, Bubble Bobble and Elevator Action. As a kid we didnt have lot of money and no Compact gamed. we had to use quarter to play the real gamed. I bought a mag that show me the patter to Mr Pac man. after I ate and pass all the fruit than it give you Blue Key. I after 2 hours I ate 84 blue key before the owner kick me out for playing with 1 quarter so long cause other wanted to play. The patter that I memories of Pacman they could kill me and there a trick if you place your Pacman under what look like a T but he must be facing up you can literally stay there for 1 to 24 hours and the bad guy would just pass by you, You wont get kill. its' like they dont see you.. I ate me a cheesesteak w soda and didn't kill me.. like I said I reach 84 Blue Key in Pac-Man. It was a record in Philadelphia that wasn't ever beaten in the hood. also in Defender with 1 Quarter i was so dam good I could play for 24 hours. @@AlsAutoandApplianceThen I'll grab a Burger Time unit for this project. I'll feel less bad about gutting something that only has one game - and that game being one I never particularly cared for.
      2.75x2.0 plus the extra space around the screen might JUST fit one of the 3.5-inch(diagonal measurement) screens. I'd have to redo a lot more inside to make it fit, but if the interior from side to side is around 3.3 inches or wider it can be made to work. But WaveShare makes a 3.2-inch screen that should work if the 3.5 is indeed too big.
      This is getting very intriguing. I guess I'll have to pick one up on my way in to work tonight and start messing with it myself tomorrow. Can't begin in earnest until I next get a chance to hit up Microcenter, but I can start measuring everything.

    Just picked up a 'Bubble Bobble' one, but that was pricey so I'm not going to risk disassembling it just yet.
    I got a Galaga one with the intention of fitting it with just a simple switch so it can also play Pac-Man, so thanks for the great video! Does Galaga have a resin cap, or is that just when there isn't a solder jumper?
    I'd like to be able to play 'Rolling Thunder' but adding extra buttons is a bit far for my skills. I guess Pac-Man is a bad one to start with since it doesn't have any buttons! All the other games on that modifiable list only use one button though, don't they?
    I can't believe you've never heard of 'Mappy'! It's a brilliant game, and on Amazon in the UK was the cheapest of the lot. You have to collect all the stolen goods, and avoid the cats. You can press the button when facing a door to open or slam it and knock the cats back. You can also get a bonus for grabbing an object if the big cat is hiding behind it, but it's risky. Also, if you jump too many times on a trampoline they change colour and break, though that's the only way you can progress through some of the bonus rounds (and deliberately bumping into the walls can speed up your way to breaking through a trampoline if you need to).

    • @relaxxxrrr
      @relaxxxrrr 4 года назад

      Yes. The 'glop top' is the one chip NES processor. They never contain the ROMS, it is on a separate flash. This looks to be an 8 pin ROM or EEPROM. Need the model number to be sure. The 14 pin chip is almost certainly the audio driver. If it's not an erasable EEPROM, the chip would need to be replaced or disabled to change the games. Soldering on a DIP socket to swap ROMS should not be too difficult. You can buy 8 pin 128K EEPROMS for about $1 each. The BIOS programmer and 8 pin clip can be found for under $20.

    I opened up my Ms. Pacman and found out that it has the same PCB as Pacman and the same jumper pads ( IOB 1-2-3 ), after careful examination of the jumpers I noticed that the Ms. Pacman doesn't have any solder blobs between jumper pads, I tried to jumper between the 6 jumper pads and had no luck finding any other games on the Ms. Pacman unit.. So I'm guessing that since Ms. Pacman came out after Pacman did and this video of modding Pacman to play other games so MyArcade decided to just put one NES rom on a chip when they built Ms. Pacman...

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance
      @AlsAutoandAppliance  4 года назад

      That is a great question, and I will say with pretty high certainty that it's not an easily doable swap with just the two machines. The ROMs themselves are different and have different video display requirements. Swapping the guts won't work due to the screen size difference and overall dimensions. If it were me, I would duplicate the graphics for Rolling Thunder mini cabinet and have a sign shop create and print custom decals to fit onto the Namco Museum cabinet. Alternatively, there are folks that have arcade roms running on raspberry pi computers that could fit into the mini cabinet. The trick would be finding a display screen that fits in the opening. There is a commenter on here that is working on doing this but I have not heard any updates. I wish I had a good answer for you, and wish you the best on your project.
