  • Leagues Cup...a great idea or manufactured rivalries? In the next few weeks, MLS will pause it's season for the first edition of Leagues Cup, a brand new tournament that pits all 29 MLS clubs and all 18 Liga MX clubs against each other in a World Cup style tournament. I don't know about you, but right now, I'm very skeptical.

As a Chicago Fire fan myself, having witnessed the team on multiple occasions falling one position short of the CCL, never qualifying once since winning the title back in 98, that I’m excited for this tournament, but I also completely understand and mostly agree with your concerns. I certainly hope that in the future, they will play some of the games in Mexico, but I’m not quite so concerned about TMMTMG, because eventually the minnows are all eaten, and we’ll get to watch the big boys duking it out. That being said, I don’t fancy myself a normal person, and normal people might find TMMTMG a huge turn off. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the tournament, and we’ll see what happens.

You nailed it with the points on the "new rivalries" tagline and the MLS venue exclusivity. There's definitely some potential in the larger format here, but with the venue exclusivity, it feels like the tournament is stacked in MLS' favor instead of being even across the board (like it should be). And I can't help but roll my eyes at the commercials hammering in the promise of "new rivalries being made" in Leagues Cup. This league has enough of an obsession with propping up paper rivalries instead of letting them develop naturally--I don't see there being a genuine spark between any MLS and Liga MX side.

    • @Anthony.LaRosa
      @Anthony.LaRosa  Год назад +6

I'm really hoping some of these matches don't feel like preseason friendlies. But, with no genuine spark, and a competition in it's first run through, I fear we may get some of those vibes, at least in the group stage.

@@Anthony.LaRosa It's definitely got some wrinkles that need to be worked out, but the optimist in me wants to say that the tournament *could* work in the near future, provided that MLS listens to criticisms like these.

The point that most resonated with me is that none of these matches are being played in Mexico.
They should just focus on promoting the Champions League/Cup a lot more than they have been.
Plus, there is value in scarcity, in making matches mean more. Have the Sounders and Timbers play just twice a year. Only play Liga MX clubs in the Champions League/Cup. One of the reasons why the NFL is so popular is because of that scarcity; it makes top matchups mean much more. As a result, they are anticipated so much more versus when soccer teams play each other often.

    • @Anthony.LaRosa
      @Anthony.LaRosa  Год назад +7

Very good points. The Champions Cup could be so much better than it is now. I agree with you that that tournament definitely needs to be promoted more. leagues Cup feels like a competitor against that competition (even though you can qualify for it through Leagues Cup)

The thing is, there are So many teams in MLS that would otherwise face Mexican teams super rarely if ever, and we all know there's Mexican clubs that will never play against any MLS team. I don't think this is overkill at all. Any average or below average team from either league will get one or two, maybe three games against teams from the other league. Average to below average teams love that.
MLS has tried so many things to try and get the league to take off, and now they're trying something that already has a history of working. Lean into nationalism a little. We love us some nationalism. This is the league of Our nation, and now it's going up against the league of Another nation to the fullest extent possible.

I still think if the Leagues Cup wants to exist, it should be the top 18 MLS and 10 LMX clubs, plus add in 4 CPL clubs and have a fully NAFU Cup similar to the UNCAF and CFU Cups that exist as CCC qualifiers. This gives it some meaning in the grander scheme of CONCACAF *AND* a club has to qualify for it, meaning no bottom feeders.

I personally don't feel engage with this, feels cheap to be honest, FMF took us out of Copa Libertadores (Playing against South American teams), and since them they just want to keep pushing us into American Market (even more after they took out relegation from our league) , don't want to be disrespecful but it's not helping us to raise the level of our league but the other way around, and with that making both leagues feel more even, when IMO, Liga MX should increise the level playing in Copa Libertadores and then with CCL helping increise the level of MLS and Central American teams, or even better and just have one tournament for the whole continent (The Americas). Anyway, greetings from Mexico :).

I’m a new fan of soccer so even catching up with normal MLS league play mid season has been interesting yet difficult. This sport probably more than any other plays so many other tournaments that it’s hard to get my head around which games counts for which cup and what all the international tournaments are all about. But on the flip side, having a “fresh start” for all the clubs plus getting to see the MX clubs in action has been cool and following the bracket from week to week feels more exciting than trying to get to know the teams by following their record through the season. Plus with Messi joining Inter-Miami you have the big story of him getting to win something significant asap (which gets people more interested in watching to see if he can pull it off), as opposed to the more likely story of him taking a last place club to the middle of the pack by the end of the MLS season over the course of a few months.

I just don't understand why some of these matches aren't played on Mexican stadium, this is clearly a lopsided home court advantage. It's about marketing and the Benjamins. Capital that are generating the Messi Mania, no doubt one of the greatest players that ever played a game.
Is highly likely that all is already setup for Miami and Messi to win the cup. That translates into millions of dollars to the executives that manage the business, because at the end of the day, that's what it's all about, Business...

I love having everyone involved, but I don't love that for most teams in MLS, there's two games. One of them is against a Liga MX club. And then there's a bunch of time off. So here's how I would do it.
First group stage, there's 8 groups. As of now, that means 5 or 6 teams in each group. I'm not giving anyone a bye, but recent champions get priority to be placed in groups with a smaller number of teams.
In the next stage, I have a guiding principle. What we want to see is the best teams against the best teams, the mid teams against the mid teams, and the bad teams against the bad teams. So after the first group stage, the top 2 from each group progress to the group stage proper. Very standard- four groups of four. The top two from each of those groups will be considered the top 8 teams of this year's tournament, and they will share a pot for the seeding of next year's first group stage. The next 8 from the group stage proper will also be seeded together. We proceed from the group stage proper to standard knockout matchups as you would expect. First place of this group against second place of that group.
As all of this is happening, I want to do a couple of other things. I would put the last place teams from the first group stage in a big group with one another, and they all get 7 games against each other. The remaining teams- the ones that were not last place but not in the top 2 places- get resorted into 4 groups. I'll call this the Big Group Stage. The top two from each group will share a pot when next year's group stages are worked out, as well as third and fourth place teams, and so on.
In an ordinary tournament, this wouldn't mean much. But in a tournament that has international implications, there are additional stakes. Neither league wants to be the one that has all of these last place teams, and fans of both leagues will argue about which league is better from top to bottom even if the eventual winner is from the other league.
I hope the tournament progresses is a direction that approximates something like this.

Great video, and I totally agree about them over-saturating the market with meaningless tournaments. However I think this could have been a good opportunity to get other CONCACAF nations involved. They have a load of US-Can-Mexico games, but an MLS Carribean cup, with winners from all over the carribean, could be a good opportunity to help those nations bring in revenue, and it would be mutually beneficial. Especially if they did it as a tour of the carribean, US sports fans bringing money to those nations would be a beautiful thing.

i don’t think the majority of mls fans watch CCL or many of the other tournaments you mentioned so i think the leagues cup is a good opportunity to get those one off matches between teams that would regularly never play each other and because of those new opportunities i think all sides could improve bc i’d be damned if dallas lost to Necaxa….
i think in the future the leagues cup could resemble the new world cup format, inviting all the central and south american leagues and even replacing the CCL

Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana 😢 also we mount forget that MLS teams did participate in Copa Sudamericana. Also the paisas will be bringing in that money 💰

Mexican fans see this tournament as a poor attempt to saturate their teams schedule to have an excuse to refuse their participation in Copa Libertadores, which is a competition the Mexicans are totally missing because there they had a lot of competitive games against Brazilian and Argentinian clubs

This is an upgraded concacaf champions league in every way.
Concacaf champions leagues should be done away with and the leagues cup be made a season long tournament.
Invite the 2 best teams of all of central America and call it a day 😂

With all respect to the Americans, this is a setback for us (the Mexicans) because time is wasted playing against you that instead of playing against the South Americans in Libertadores and Sudamericana, we already had an advance reaching the finals and beating them, we only lacked the mischief of them (because we already have the quality) and we wanted to measure ourselves with them now. Greetings from Mexico.

Thank u. Thank u. Also all games on usa soil. And top of that. Almost all games on apple tv
This is whole thing i know this is a joke. This just caters to MLs and usa crowd. Just like mls vs liga mx. That made up liga mx champion vs mls champion. Its a joke, no one values other usa propaganda to push this anti mexican shit. How mls is better than liga mx.
mexican fans want to their clubs to go and play in sudamerica n libertadores. MLS N CONCACAF IS FORCING LIGA MX NOT TO DO THAT. If they go, mls and liga mx will come together. This is how i know USA is trying to merge concacaf with comnebol. Its going to happen. Right now, copa libertadores is losing money.
Usa needs thos fans. This is why in argentina, they talk bad about liga mx. Which is reasonable but espn argentina pundits or tyc. They never talk down on mls. Thats because mLs has the dollar. Right now, south qmerica leagues are in crisis. Exception of brazil. Argentina, ecuador, colombia. They need that money
U look at staduims in argentina. They need money. Mark my word. They will be a merger of conmebol n concacaf and usa will be in charge

I like it. The biggest problem with concacaf is we dont have high level competition. If we start making clubs more competitive in our confederation it will stop the exporting of high talented players to Europe or god forbid Saudi Arabia. Overall don't be shocked if one day this becomes a single league for the 3 countries. More money means more talent stays due to higher incomes.

I saw your derrogatory points as too superfluos. Personally, the big picture is having a direct comparison. Liga Mx was by far the best league in the north, now that MLS is growing and USA national team is better than mexico. Even if its with alternative teams everybody wins. Also, expenses will be mounstrous, i doubt it will ever be this big. Best best would be a 12 or 10 team tournament. My 2cents.
