- As MLS clubs enter Round Four of the US Open Cup this week, let's take a look at one of the best stories from the competition's history. In 2016, FC Cincinnati joined the USL...and in their second year of existence, they reached the semifinal of the US Open Cup. This amazing run in 2017 gave them the boost needed to secure an MLS expansion franchise.

The US open cup is exactly why the MLS needs to work with USL to create a fair and realistic promotion and relegation system
US Open Cup isn't even popular. More than 100 years of USOC and it has really bad ratings and viewership
It would be great to see eventually. Pros and cons both ways, but a really great idea.
@@Anthony.LaRosa my hope is the USL incorporates it first. If it goes well, adapt it on a nationwide scale. If it doesn’t go well, then now we know and drop it there
@@Owensully123 Think that’s how it’ll play out. USL have said that implementing pro/rel is their end goal, so just gotta wait to see how/if it happens
As much as it sucks, thats just never going to happen, thats not the MLS model. To join the MLS, FC Cincinnati had to pay a $500M expansion fee. That is the MLS model. I don't ever see the teams and league agreeing to a promotion system when that is how they set the league up.
On top of that the USL markets are not attractive enough and teams do not make enough money to stay afloat when you are looking at the investments they have to make to join the MLS to start with. If an MLS team would get relogated, they would fold. To stay with FC Cincinnati to keep the example alive, they just built a huge stadium downtown and are paying their D.P.s a couple of million dollars (assisted by the league). If they were to get dropped down, they would immediately lose the MLS revenue share, lose their players, have no TV deal, and then just disappear. The stadium cost, and $500M expansion fee, and all of those players they signed would be to much to support. This could happen to premier league teams also, but the Championship Division in England still has good support, so yes they often lose their top players, but they don't necessarily have to fold. They also don't pay half a Billion to join the league.
I'm agree with you that it would be great, but it just is not going to happen here.
Now *this* is the kind of history I love to learn about! I knew FC Cincinnati had their roots in the USL, and that their fans had a pretty intense rivalry with some obscure team named "Nashville SC," but not much more than that.
Come to think of it, I do wonder why MLS seems so lukewarm when it comes to the Cincinnati-Nashville rivalry, now that both clubs are in the same league again. I guess with the Yotes switching conferences, the Hell is Real Derby is a more stable opportunity to give the Baileys a rival.
Such a good story! The best part too is that Cincinnati play Louisville in the Open Cup this week...so a little taste of what used to be a heated rivalry in the USL
We hate them both lol
Cincy is a HUGE soccer town, we all played growing up and we always wanted our own team ever since the MLS got started. It felt like 2015 was a long time coming tbh I still don’t think I’ve heard a louder stadiums than nippert FCC games.
P.S SCREW THE CREW, HELL IS REAL!!!!!
Best American club video I've ever seen. You're truly making a difference for soccer in this country whether you feel it or not. Brilliant stuff 👏
Means a lot! Appreciate the love :)
Remember? I lived it.
As a fan of the sport I never thought it would take hold in my city. Other attempts came and went. FC Cincinnati was different, I signed up for season tickets in 2015 and there was a real sense of momentum. People were hungry for this and it blew all expectations away. That open Cup run was so magical with the Chicago match being some of the best atmosphere I've experienced.
The only shame is as we sell out all 25,513 in our stadium for league play the Open Cup has been relegated as an after thought. We play Louisville this week and while I'm pumped to see our old rival back I'd be surprised if we can get 10K to turn out for it. I really wish it held a spot in our culture because nothing like it in US sports.
It's an unfortunate reality. Wish the Open Cup got more support.
Awesome hearing your experience In Cincinnati! That Chicago game must have been so awesome to attend. I went to TQL last year also, it was such a great atmosphere!
Looking forward to the hopeful re-ignitiion of the river cities derby, Up the orange and blue.
FC Cincinnati vs Chicago US open cup match was the most exciting sporting event I’ve ever witnessed.
Charlotte just lost to Birmingham as well yesterday, I hope the smaller market runs never stop
I'm from Cindy and I can confidently say that FCC was bound to succeed. Don't know why but Cindy in that period was very good at the youth soccer level. Several of the youth teams had won nationals and this was before there was an individual league for pro team academies. The market was most definitely there. the size of the success tho and just how quick it was I did not see coming.
And now it's the best in the East. What a club.🎉🎉
This was really cool for me to watch. The open cup win against chicago was my first fc cincinatti game i went to and i have been a season ticket holder now for three seasons
Glad you enjoyed. Must've been a great first match to go to!
🔶️🔷️🦁⚽️ I'm proud to say that I've been a supporter of this club since day 1. Our US Open Cup run was magical. It was such a pleasure to see 30k people supporting the clubs, in those days.
Our new stadium is slightly smaller, now. But, the vibes are immaculate (mainly in the Bailey)
I've been there once, and can say I was very impressed with the atmosphere you guys have!
I remember watching CincyFC playing those matches, they even hosted my fav Spanish team, Valenciafc! The way you tell the story is even better.👏🏻👏🏻
What a time to be alive! Glad you enjoyed :)
Sacramento Republic needs to come to the MLS. They been taking their sweet time
MLS won’t let that happen
@@tennismaster2000Why ?
I just found out about this Channel and I love it. Content is amazing. Personally MLS for the last decade or so have been my favorite league to watch. Greetings from 🇵🇦
Six years later, it's FC Cincinnati who have to make the trip to Red Bull Arena in the US Open Cup once again, a Red Bulls team that is playing more like the one they saw in 2017 than the one they knocked out of the playoffs in 2022 thanks to a much needed coaching change.
I remember these games like they were yesterday. Each game I screamed louder and louder, and my voice would be gone for days.
This story will be one I tell my kids, and I will never forget chanting “MITCH SAYS NO” after his PK performance. When FCC lost I couldn’t believe it, but it’s still the best sports experience I’ve ever had.
I have been an MLS fan for several years now but this was very intresting
Then I'm doing my job! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Being at all those cup games was a dream. I watch the fire penalties before every big game to get hyped.
Let's go Hounds!!! We're coming!
Your channel is getting better and better. ✌🏻🏴
Thank you very much! Doing my best to keep improving the product I put out.
Proud of my city and this club. Look at us now, one of the most dangerous in the MLS. Truly inspiring.
You should be. And now with my LAFC out, you guys are my favorite to win this year’s tournament. It would be a great story-to win the very tournament that most likely propelled you into MLS in the first place.
So inspiring your pfp is the logo of a team the rest of the world cares about lmao
EPIC USOC run!! 2017 was exhausting, amazing and will likely NEVER be repeated!! 2023 has been record-breaking and HellIsReal was as electric as TQL has ever been, but 2017 will be our pinnacle of passion for FC Cincy
Great content! Never heard this story before and the way you presented it with full clips etc was great. This is the type of unique stuff that will push this channel to the big time. There is really a gap in the youtube football/soccer landscape when it comes to MLS deep dives. Subbed and can't wait to see your next one.
Thank you for documenting this inspiring story, and thanks for the memories!
Thank YOU for watching it :)
The penalty kick game was my first soccer game I'd ever been to. I didn't know what offsides was or what was going on.. but the electricity in that stadium that night was something i have never felt before or since watching sports.
really well done, great work!
Appreciate it :)
Fantastic production Anthony! really enjoyed this!
Really appreciate that!
Great video. Great story.
Great video!❤
Such a good video, it’s cool to learn about team backgrounds. Really feeling that old usl jersey and crest as well 😬
Thanks! That jersey is gold
If by ‘earned’ you mean drew the attention of the MLS to a passionate market they can exploit.
Sporting merit means nothing in US Soccer when you have an MLS monopoly on a closed system.
Market research and potential franchise income is the only thing that motivates ‘promotion’ to the MLS single entity monolith.
Earned the right to pay the couple hundred million dollar expansion fee :p
Or the mls fucks over some other team that’s been there like they are in San Diego. Also Landon Donavan owns the other team. One of the reason mls even took off like it did.
@@raramcgee4982 yep, instead of earn your way to the top the MLS is buy your way to the top. Screwing over San Diego loyal and every other lower league team who should be able to EARN promotion.
Making sure expansion franchises go to markets in which they will succeed (aka good business practices) = exploitation.
Soccer cannot succeed in America without focusing on strong markets, period. The US market cannot support a 2nd friggin' American football league, and it's their favorite sport among 4. If the MLS attempted to create a pyramid, it would collapse.
This is why NDSU football can't even get on TV or sell out their own stadium in the playoffs despite being the single most successful football program in history relative to level. It's in the equivalent of English Championship of college football whereas the Alabamas and Georgias are Premiership. It's not top tier, Americans don't care. MLS knows this, and has organized accordingly.
I recently became an FCC fan since i live close to Cincinnati and this video helped me a lot to understand even more the roots of FCC, thank you so much. ❤
I was a Chicago fan at that open cup game. The legend of Mitch is a real thing, and to this day I still resent cincy for it
haha, love it!
Really really well made video! Keep up the great work
Thank you!
brings me a smile to my face i love my team!!!!
this was a great video!! really enjoyed it and we need more channels like this to grow the game here in america. Great stuff
Can’t even find most Open Cup matches on tv. I will not pay for this type of game when the fans don’t even care. Why should we care about it? Why should we care about MLS without pro/rel and with ridiculous conferences that serve the same useless purpose as NBA divisions? The EPL is always exciting, whether for the title, the European places, or avoiding the drop (and anyone who denies this is likely a Remain voter). Find an ordinary fan who watches the Concacaf CL, the InterLiga, the SuperLiga, the Leagues Cup, or whatever other contrived competition.
@@vitesse_arnhem 100% fair and valid. I’m not telling you to not have those opinions. WE NEED THOSE OPINIONS. WE NEED YOUR PASSION. I believe the mls has absolutely been a money grab I could go on, but if we have a community that wants the real footy, the real footy will come. I believe we can have a league here that isn’t corrupted by money and I plan to give my life to that vision. Kids need this sport here, but we need it non pay to enter a league and we need pro/rel, we need several different leagues/tiers if you will. But videos like this show that there are people here that have the passion for the sport the real sport.
@@stephenwalters6598 Facts... I think we agree on most points. One that stood out was pay-to-play sports. Rich kids with decent talent get picked over poor undiscovered kids with amazing talent. We don’t have pickup soccer in America. Random playtime is for basketball and other sports, not soccer. Until random pickup soccer becomes commonplace, we will never, ever be a contender on the world stage.
@@vitesse_arnhem AMEN AMEN🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻you are 100% right man. I want pickup soccer here to grow frfr cuz that is the difference between us and other countries when it comes to that frfr
Class video mate
Thank you!
great video and great topic
Appreciate it!
beautiful
Wow this is amazing
Dude, i just noticed your views/subs holy hell your videos are fire 🔥🔥🔥
Go get em!
Amazing video !
Thank you!
I'm sure Don cared less about Cincys success and more about the supporters showing up consistently
I flew out to attend the SF. Amazing drama!
After the match, the RBNY players applauded the Bailey end! 18:10. I have never seen that before.
Two things I find fun about this history are what caused the initial pro side to start, and one of the reasons the MLS bid happened.
I hope one day my Excelsior United team can make it happen. Been doing for 2 years creating and building chemistry. Every players that I’ve met, their so talented. My goal is becoming the best team.
The Fans earned the club the MLS expansion!
This video deserves so many more views, so well made 👏
Thank you! Little by little
Honestly never got into soccer, but I think I might start trying. Great video. Not to criticize, but it's pronounced Lew-uh-vull
Also the D***butt sighting at 2:30 made my day
I was laughing when I found that video...glad someone picked up on it too!
Also so known as when FC Cinci had cool uniforms
Great video BUT...no mention of who planted the roots, who built the foundation...
Ooh ahh Johnny Harkes, ooh ahh Johnny Harkes...
Cut due to time, but all respects paid to good ol' Harkes!
@Anthony LaRosa ha,, no worries, he's a friend so I'm biased!
i find it so funny that columbus crew always seems to get beat by usl clubs in the us open cup. first fc cincinnati in 17, and then my home club, detroit city fc in 22. let's hope that streak continues
FC Cincinnati’s journey has been pretty crazy, they were one of the worst teams in MLS for a few seasons, then last season their besr finish in 5th and now they have an opportunity to win the Supporter’s Shield!
I never knew....now I do🙂
dope
Just noticed both Stuver and Jimenez who played for Columbus now play for Austin FC
Ethan Findlay and Gyasi Zardes too! A lot of those guys have found a place down there.
Do you think the San Diego Loyal could get promoted or is the city getting a completely new team?
From the reports I’ve seen, it’s looking like a whole new team is going to be coming there. Unfortunate tbh
Remember when FC Cincinnati Uniforms and Badge looked cool. Yeah me too
Shouldve happened to Sacramento FC too but sadly thatll have to wait for a few years
At this point doubt we’ll ever make it to the MLS 😢
@@tennismaster2000 I know man it's really sad 😔 only good thing about it is I can still cheer for them lol because ima union fan
And now...MLS is behind a paywall. #MLSGREED
10:23 And this is what US Soccer saw in Gregg Bearhalter to hire him to be USMNT coach 😂😂
Hope something similar happens in sac in the next few years from their run last year
Unlikely, they’ve been passed over time and time again 😩
Cup Championships are the best in every country. Great to see that there are Football clubs in the US that actually have a true Fan scene.
next steps cancel the S word and call the sport by its name: Football!
FC Cincinnati got to play MLS teams at home, Union Omaha had to play 3 all on the road beating Chicago Minnesota and losing to Kansas City
This gave me chills to watch as someone who saw my hometown club reach the top and now we are prepared to no longer being a last place finisher
Very happy to hear that. Also very glad that the on the field product is matching the energy the supporters have always had!
MLS video essays?? I've finally found my YT channel!
:)
You may have already heard of him, but @DannyTRadio is another great channel for MLS content like this!
I’d give an arm and a leg for MLS to split into MLS1 and MLS2 with pro rel. it’s not full pro rel obviously but it would be enough for now for sure
super
Remember when Rochester Rhinos won the US Open Cup, never joined MLS, got caught up in a new stadium boondoggle, and fans just never followed from Frontier Field?
Honestly we need a promotion and relegation system here in the USA
Mitch says no
Curacao vs argentina had mls players on both sides.
Shoutout Mitch Hildebrandt for balling his ass off vs Fire. Dude was so good he signed with Atlanta United later that year 😂
I was surprised to see when researching that he now is a performance analysis for Saint Louis CITY!
if i am the chair man of usa national soccer association i would get new condition for team to move up, if a team bellow mls win us open cup they would give free promotion to mls but if they were on the bottom 3 on the same season they will get relegate from mls...it's makes more sense since this league doesn't have relegation system
Now MLS has pulled out of the Open Cup🙃 something needs to be done about it
>"david vs goliath, but in real life"
>shot of the wonderwall at allianz
>*war flashbacks to the union omaha thrashing*
at least we have bongi this time, right?
Remember when Cleveland almost beat them in the open cup
I think we need promotion and relegation in order to succeed as a soccer playing nation. We need to have low tier MLS teams like San Jose get demoted. That threat should be enough to make stingy owners invest more into a team. As a SJ fan, I wonder why we are even in MLS given the general lack of investment compared to other teams in our league. We just got beat my Monterey Bay in the US open cup…
Pro/Rel would be a way to get more investment into clubs. It's just such a tricky thing to implement at the moment. Maybe in the future though
Buy they won 2 mls cups,
And now they're the best team in the league
I don’t think the open cup was the reason they got the expansion. I do think it helped though. Columbus getting screwed by their owner I believe was the main driving force. They though crew supports would be ok if they put a team close to them.
Do Sacramento next
I talk about their run in this! Not the same, but ruclips.net/video/j3p91SdB4es/видео.html
Hell is Real
Like really why we don’t have regulations yet ?
very cool video, even though you said PK and i cringed
Member when FCC was ordained as Ohio's replacement team when MLS wanted to move the Crew?
If the US wants more stories like this and truly wants to grow football Stateside, with people buying in like the Cincy fans did... they need to introduce promotion and relegation.
Stories such as Notts County finally escaping the non-league system and Luton Town being the first team to go from non-league to Premier League are what make this sport so intriguing and interesting.
And they never do anything after that Lol, the goal of MLS is a high level of competition spread out across each team versus having like 5 super teams and everyone else fights for 6th place
And that Columbus crew manager is now the manager of the usmnt AGAIN smh
Now Cincinnati in the 22-23 season of the MLS are not playing as well…
What’s ridiculous is Sacramento republic made it to the finals and got nothing
Let’s hope Detroit is next
waiting for SAFC's MLS
They just beat Louisville 1-0 again!
Oh lord no 😂 MONEY got them in the MLS
True…but also there were countless cities willing to pay that expansion fee that weren’t selected!
@@Anthony.LaRosa that’s is correct. FCC had a goal from the beginning to make the move. They did an excellent job marketing the program
Arsenal vs mls all stars in july.
God I would love a relegation system in the US
❤qcuracao will play hull city in turkey.
What really kickstarted FC Cincinnati was the clubs buy-in on marketing to the younger generation of Cincinnati residents and the students of the campus they played on. Living on campus those USL years was incredible and everybody became a fan of the team at the University, and with Cincinnati's brewery culture, and young population all residing around the lower east side and just across the river in NKY, the team was selling out every game and had fans at every local bar/brewery in town. I always say if any professional sports team needs a case study on how to build a brand with grassroots marketing and appealing to a younger audience, FC Cincinnati is the best example. Hell, they forced the Bengals, THE BENGALS, to change their perspective and brand. The Bengals were the same brand and team for 30+ years with no change. FC Cincinnati put the pressure on them, and suddenly Cincinnati goes from one of the worst pro sports towns to suddenly back towards the top.
As a second part, I got to work for FC Cincinnati their first year in the MLS. It was a dream come true and one of the best experiences in my career.
MY DREAM PROMOTION AND RELEGATION RULES FOR AMERICAN SOCCER
RELEGATION :is the 2 teams who Finish last in the eastern conference and western conference to play a game and the winner is saved and the loser gets relegated to usl and same thing for usl. But for USL 1 and 2. The team who Finish in last in each section do get split in to 2 groups and do a round robin tournament, last place in each group gets relegated.
PROMOTION: first to 4 in the usl have a semi final mini tournament. With 1st plays 4th and 2nd play 3rd. The winner of each game go to a promotion final and winner goes to the MLS and qualify to their respective conference. For USL 1 and 2, the team in first of each group get split into 2 groups and first place of each group get promoted.
CONCLUSION: With this system the teams of each league will play more games if they get to the promotion places and the teams will have a reason to play hard, and not have them as teams that just play the reserves of teams in the MLS.
and yet Sac gets sacked....
Screwed over time and time again 🙃
2:20 wow such big supporters with the most basic chant of all time
You do realize the club was only two years old at the time they were knocked out of the tournament, right? They had only played their first meaningful game ever 16 months prior
