I'm glad you guys are still creating content. I listen to the podcast and watch when I can. Been following for years now. Keep it up. I've learned so much.

I personally have never even clicked the dislike button. If I don’t like a video, I just close it. Never thought it was even necessary to click. The like button makes sense because it creates a private playlist that I can go back to.
Now after reading comments I do see the need for the dislike button.

Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever clicked a dislike button on RUclips either. On Reddit? Sure-I've downvoted a few times.

I know of a RUclipsr who likes some proportion of dislikes, it shows him he's not being too bland.

Makes sense-if you're producing something creative, targeted to a specific audience-by design it shouldn't be universally liked. Though I imagine what can improve like proportion is setting expectations up front, so people aren't disappointed when it's not what they expected.

The thing about the dislike button being removed is it removes a way for people to gauge the credibility of a video. For people like you and Nick that don't generally post on RUclips often and don't rely on the platform as heavily as other creators, I definitely see why the change doesn't affect you as much.
However, for the general user, I think there's definitely a bigger impact. One example that people like to use are video tutorials. If someone's looking for a tutorial on how to install a Ring doorbell for example, a dislike counter would really help people sift out videos that potentially give dangerous advice.
Then there's explainer-type videos that talk about a specific subject. If the video is giving out misleading or uninformed information, then seeing dislikes could suggest that something may be off about the content of the video.
For most users though I do think that it doesn't matter because people just follow who they like anyway, but there is still definitely a ton of downsides to simply not having the counter visible.

Great point! Also I'd like to add that the dislike count was never something that a content creator could modify. Sure they could turn it off but that seems fishy. The comment section is way less reliable for the same purposes. Creators can give a ton of hearts to comments which show up on the top, or they can simply remove negative comments. Personally I've never used the dislike button, but having it was never something that I considered a bad thing.
Sometimes on controversial videos the dislikes can lead you to reasons not to associate with a content creator.
I get the "whatever it's gone" mentality, I think I share the same point of view but is quite interesting to hear other people's opinion on the topic.
Btw Great podcast as always! Came for the mystery, stayed for the dislikes :D

Hello, I think you gentlemen are absolutely wrong about the dislike button. There are so many mediocre videos on RUclips that the creators need to be notified and be made aware when they do a bad or inadequate job. Viewers should also be made aware, and the dislike button with a counter makes the creators accountable. You two Gents never need to worry about this of course because your videos are always excellent.

Ha ha, thank you so much, Terme! Content creators will still receive those dislikes as feedback through RUclips analytics-though to your point, perhaps there's less incentive to remain accountable to the audience, when the counter is no longer visible to the public.
