- Australia's Lord Howe Island is famous for its beauty and unique mix of plants and animals.
Nowhere is this more evident than in a rare cloud forest atop the island's two southern mountains.
But its environment has faced a battle for survival.

If I had a chance, I would definitely travel there once~in~a~lifetime. The ecosystem is the valuable natural heritage we have and we must cherish this such a priceless resource and keep our environment sustainable.
I feel like it’s better to just let it be and appreciate it from afar
@@user-pe2yx9kt4e exactly.
Open the island up to tourism and don't be surprised when it starts suffering massive ecological damage and gets suffocated with trash.
@@user-pe2yx9kt4e true but some people would be even more eager to help the ecosystem if they witnessed the wonders of it firsthand
It's so beautiful when you are up there and the rest of the island is fantastic, too. Good to see they are protecting it.
I’ll be honest the 99% of Australian wants absolutely no change to this paradise. But it’d be the other 1% who’d see it as a profiteering gain and then wonder why the reefs dying and ruin the island just like the Whitsundays
I f-ing love the whitsundays dude, had the maddest kegger there a couple years back freaking awesome. Only probs is, nowhere to take a leak...
@@bigdundee12345 Where are those islands at?
Absolutely brilliant - what a fantastic project to manage and preserve this precious place!!!!!
This looks like an amazing place. It is a great example, it shows we can reverse or minimize invasive species (including human) impact to an environment.
Thank you for sharing, God bless Australia, save water, save life and protect wildlife. A gift of the divine grace to humans.🙏
Australia ignored this problem until they planned tourism just for profit and they only protect ecosystem to destroy it with their toxic tourism later. Australias tourism is the worst.
@@insectbite1714 Sad to hear that, please protect the paradise.🙏
@@nandanm3826 yup I am in Dominican Republic and the resort uses a policy to reduce washing things when not nessecary, uses electric vehicles, paper straws and wooden utensils, has bamboo planted so people may someday cut that down and not trees that grow slowly, and even plants on buildings and water saving toilots with 2 button flush system
So beautiful and it reminds me of Cast Away movie
Well done guys there was an island off the coast of North NZ they irradiated the rats to save the Kiwis the name escapes me but I have seen it from paraparaum I think its Kapiti Island
Australia is paradise:
With every sunset and sunrise
She'll give us happiness and love,
Although we know it's not enough,
But we are sure that she will
(If we just ask for this!) fulfill
Our boundless wishes and desires.
Australia, you're paradise!
Forever we will all love you,
Like grass awaits the morning dew,
Like birds will need high azure sky,
Where even humans want to fly
Enjoying all this paradise -
The smallest continent by size
With real miracles from God!
From day to day we only thought
How we could find the shortest way
To get to Queensland, Sydney's Bay,
Canberra, Darwin, Perth, Gold Coast:
They're all the best - there is no worst
On wonderful Australian land
Which miracles will never end!
How amazing Earth is !

Wonderful video story

The convicts*

So nice to hear they got something good done here. Hopefully aliens won't come along to Earth and look at us the same way as those rodents 🙄
Totally agree... This speciesest ideology that us humans have come to subscribe to is truly mind boggling! Rodents are damaging the ecosystem = BAD... Yet, humans simultaneously destroying enormous swathes of ecosystems all over the world to make room for animal agriculture/ exploitation of certain species = GOOD FOR PROFITS... In both examples, animal abuse is rife and unjust... The cognitive dissonance of people continues to astonish.
Now everyone knows this place it’s gonna be crowded and spoiled.. thanks bbc
@Lilly Sayles helicopter was right there and it's an island... and people have always proven to wild animal these days especially tourist
@Lilly Sayles it's humans nature to be part of something beautiful ..if millions of people watch it and handful of decides to visit especially to this island which is already in danger it's something to think about. also you can look to different places like Everest , Thailand ..
Only 380 people are permitted to live on the island and government only allows 400 beds for tourists. So numbers of visitors are already restricted and they will not be increased.
there is a limit to how many tourists are allowed on at once on lord Howe island and the small number of tourists is the main economy on the island so please do research before complaining
Dint say exactly how they eradicated the rodents except they dropped baits...
I think the "baits" were fruits laced with poison to kill of and eradicate the rodents off the island.
@@erdelegy a lot of the "planning" was likely because of how controversial it was as many people on the island don't want rat baits everywhere even in their gardens
Look at that slug! which means better off now.
What was used to eradicate the rodents ?
BBC thank

@@kgkg-nk6rd oh so immigrants then. Not natives . 🤔
I kind of wish they never showed this Island and use kept it a beautiful little secret down there. Nothing more horrid for nature than tourists, please keep this place far away from tourism. It is magnificent
tourism is capped at 400 at one time, air bnb is banned as are cruise ships. Our tourism industry is what keeps us as residents afloat as well as maintains good favour with the government which in turn allows us to maintain our world heritage listing.
We eradicated the rats to preserve the environment, which in turn fuels our tourism industry and these in combination were what gave the government the motivation to offer us the grant that enabled the eradication in the first place
Tourism is only a problem when it becomes the priority over the environment itself, which is nonsensical as without our natural beauty, there is no tourism draw, so for us it's hand in hand
There is always a compromise
my question is, arent rodents being there just a part of nature? so why mess with nature, who's to say the rodents being there is wrong etc?
They are non native species..rodents only there since 1918
lets put it another way - if someone introduces a pack of lions into your neighbourhood will you still say "why mess with nature" or "being there is wrong"....?
@Lilly Sayles pls do a search on invasive species=extinct species
What a beautiful place. Well done to all to preserve island. Poison baits...to get rid of rats... after all of this hopefully the wildlife can remain un impacted by mass people.

When people think of Australia they do not usually think of jungles, forests, rain forests, savannas, or swamps but instead deserts and beaches and some metropolis areas
The top third of mainland Australia is in the tropics. Full of rainforests and wetland river systems.
1:49 hmm yes this tree is tall
that's not what he's doing idiot, he's trying to measure the rodents
Easy to do this Australia than in India. Almost everything is lost.

Is this island one of those places that are "so special" that nobody is allowed to go there?
what if some rodents float on some rafts or a shipwreck or a pile of floating coconuts with more rats on board crash landed on the island again

bbc is o joke
Congratulations for eradicating the rodents. Too bad it had to be done with rat bait, but better that than introducing feral cats. With a population, you undoubtedly have some of those.
Preserve biodiversity and a clean nature!
Rat island sounds cooler
Can't we just build another island that does the same thing 🤔
Place a few cats on the island to keep the rodent population in check
You obviously haven't read up on the damage cats are causing to wildlife then ??
how can it be saved from bbc?
Hhvv
Lol vegans how do you feel about this ?
Saravanan, an independent candidate from Madurai South constituency, promises to build 20 lakh cars, 3 apartments, swimming pool, I phone, bank year 1 crore, travel to the moon, rocket launch site, iceberg. Be the comedy you hear😂😂😂
Omg rodents are people too! I cannot believe they’re actually KILLING them all for a freaking cloud...
"for a cloud?" It has nothing to do with the cloud. The rodents are eating the seeds to the vegetation and other small animals. They are an invasive species that is not native to the island and they are basically killing the trees, plants and all living things on that island. Me thinks you may have missed that part of the story.
They're removing a creature that isn't native to that island. A creature that is detrimental to the entire eco system of that island. And now you understand, my crayon chewing friend.
@Eduardo Lipshitz 🤣🤣🤣 they probably passed through several other safe cloud islands before they got to that one. Better benefits there......
