    In a lot of this cross-training videos, what EVEN the judo guys trying to teach judo to BJJ people miss is that, in JUDO training, you spent hours upon hours, days upon days, practicing simple things like "hand position and dominion", or even just the going in and out, moving your center of balance. So, you can't just teach a quick hip movement to a BJJ person who has never trained this and expect them to be efficient with it -- you've done it thousands of times in dedicated training JUST FOR THAT SKILL.
    Half of the time Judo trains FUNDAMENTAL skills of balance-imbalance, movement and position -- not simply the techniques.

      You've touched on a good point, which is the importance of getting dominant grips. Dominant grips are the equivalent of having good position on the ground. If you don't have dominant grips, you're only options are to defend against throw/take-down attempts, and try to break your opponent's grips; any other course of action will result in your getting ragdolled and thrown.

      From a takedown heavy karate practitioner I can sympathize with you. From my prospective the grips, center of balance, and basic body mechanics are very familiar. When I show other martial artists my favorite videos they often need a great deal of coaching or at least some insight on how to actually execute these techniques. I tend to send them to www.youtube.com/@Shigashi84 for a detailed breakdown of techniques. That being said for me I absolutely love this type of content. Love Kevin's channel and highly recommend Shintaro Higashi's channel for anyone interested in more of the same! Higashi's channel is easily the most detailed and understandable content on youtube Judo

    I’m a brown belt in judo and blue belt in bjj. In judo newaza (groundwork) I wreck everyone but the coach and in bjj most people pull guard for fear of being thrown. My last 3 bjj competitions I did each 3 weeks apart in a 6 week period. I got double gold in the first 2 taking every opponent down using modified techniques such as tani otoshi from a side body lock in no gi. The 3rd competition I did not get a takedown and lost on points. They work incredible together making up where each is lacking.

      Why do you wreck everyone as a BJJ blue belt? You mean in judo competitions?

    • @thedopesickshow
      @thedopesickshow 2 года назад +1

      @@watamutha I mean in judo class when we do newaza (groundwork). I can’t remember my guard being passed in the last year in judo, and I easily sweep, pass, and submit.

      @@thedopesickshow Ahh gotcha. I was thinking about doing 3-4 yrs of judo before going to BJJ. Probably going to start soon. Most people seem to recommend that.

    • @thedopesickshow
      @thedopesickshow 2 года назад +2

      @@watamutha I just do both! For me it’s the glue that keeps me together, April 9th will make 12 years without heroin. Judo imo is better for self defense with a heavy emphasis on top pins you can throw ground and pound from and once it hits the mat in judo you only have about 20 seconds before they stand you up. You have to get a submission or pin in that time, and if you hold a pin for 20 seconds you automatically win. Also throws that allow you to remain standing with your opponent down are tremendous. I have a wild story on my channel called PRISON FIGHTS I Fought A Prison Monster about how incredible even primitive level grappling is in an actual one on one fight. If you do just judo for 3 years and switch to bjj you will absolutely dominate the standing game, and most throws land you in a side pin. I also box btw, I think you need standing striking, standing clinch, and groundwork. I saw hundreds of fights and have been in a handful, based on what I saw and personal experience 95% of fights end in a standing clinch after a few punches and usually aimless wrestling until both parties get tired happens. About 25% of fights I’ve seen went to the ground. Judo has good pins but bjj is far ahead in groundwork, especially bottom position. You don’t want ANY place left untrained so no matter where you end up you can confidently defend against anyone untrained. I also powerlift, I went from 135 to winning powerlifting competitions. I have before and afters in a thumbnail in my videos.

      @@thedopesickshow Congrats on the 12 years being clean! I've practiced traditional martial arts most of my life and someone asked my opinion in a real fight what disciplines would be most useful. I had to think about it a bit and said probably boxing (measuring proper distance and people rarely kick) and judo (in case of clinch, ability to stay on top and basic ground work) which prompted me to want to start studying judo. You have an interesting history! I'll be sure to watch some of your vids.

    I'm a bjj guy but i cross train judo, and being taller - that high grip that Aurelia likes is great. I tend to hit more sacrifice throws off it, sumi gaeshi, yoko otoshi, stuff like that. What kills any judo i might be trying to do, is when they stiff arm and keep their hips back. Particularly if they grab your belt or post on your hip and just stiff arm you so you cant get your hips in at all.. One of those things you cant do in Judo but in BJJ it's fine - and it totally shuts down all my judo lol. That being said, i'm not that good at Judo and i'm sure there are solutions to the annoying hip post.

      Beginner/Novice level Judoka stiff arm too, BJJ guys aren’t the only ones who do it. Gripping and circular movement always beats stiff arming. The reason why you’re having trouble throwing BJJ people who stiff arm is because more than likely you’re attacking head on, probably from a 50/50 position with neutral grips, instead of attacking from an angle of some sort with dominant grips. I cross train BJJ and when I throw BJJ people I like taking a deep collar grip and stripping their lapel grip off of me and turning that into a low sleeve grip. I am always circling either left or right but with that deep collar grip I’m always controlling their head no matter which direction I go. As a right handed player, if I back step towards my right, I use my lapel hand to punch their jaw, if I step to their right (my left) I’m yanking on that collar as I move which breaks their posture greatly as well as putting me at an advantageous angle to throw them from.

    • @budisutanto5987
      @budisutanto5987 3 месяца назад

      Stiff arm. Depends on where the opponent place it, it's strong if you move forward, but weak when you move backwards.
      When you progress more, you might find that stiff arm is a weakness, because you lose pull & shove hand power, solely use your body to do pull or push.

  • @OmegaSupremeWCheese
    @OmegaSupremeWCheese 2 года назад +1

    Kevin, asking a Judoka to play defense and not attack is like asking a bird not to fly :) The rules are set up differently, in judo you are penalized for not attacking, and it's hard to break that mentality. I have problems with strong BJJ guys because if I make a mistake and let them grip they'll just grip and stall, and I'm just not used to it. But to your question on defense, grip fighting, grip fighting, grip fighting, if they can't get the grip they want they can't hurt you (unless they're a really high-level player, and at that point, you didn't stand a chance anyway.) And lastly it might sound silly but use your WC, you should be pak, tan bong sao to deflect, and break grips all day long.

    Now about that low wrist grip... that is morally illicit in Judo as your gripps should NOT provide undue advantage or reduce the chance of injury. Elbow grip is what is widely accepted, unless you grab the lower wrist with the intention of immediate strike.
    Deliberately avoiding gripping is not permitted, and in a standing position, it is not allowed to take any grip other than "normal" unless again your attack doesn't take longer then 3-5 secs.

    • @-Toni-R
      @-Toni-R 7 месяцев назад

      And who's to say that your attack will work? After all it is a defensive sport, and if you miss you'd get a warning and eventually disqualified for simply not holding the right grip to begin with! You can of course move your hand of the elbow grip and slide it down if necessary as you throw, to skip the part where you can be disqualified. And to some comments about being disqualified if you are not attacking, that is a bit untrue;
      Judo is a defensive sport, you get warnings for inactivity not for not attacking.... you can actively defend your self without ever attacking! Speaking out of a lot of experience...

    The true gospel is the good news of the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, it is concerning who Christ is and what He did to save His elect only. The gospel includes the how and why, which can only be seen by faith.
    It is a message that declares how the eternal Son of God came down, took on a body of sinless flesh (John 1:14) as He was born of a virgin (Mat 1:23). He was both God and man in one Person.
    He was born under the Law to keep and fulfill it (Mat 5:18, Gal 4:4). He did that, not for Himself, but for all those He represented because they could not keep it themselves. The word of God calls these people the elect or His sheep, among several other names.
    His obedient life also included the part of dying. He took on the sin of His people as both a Substitute and Representative of those people. The Bible said He was "made to be sin" (II Cor 5:21) and the way that was done is by God imputing (legally reckoned or charged to the account of) sin to Christ. That means all the sin of all those people God chose was "laid on Him" (Isaiah 53:6). This sin was legally transferred to His account and He then owned it in such a way to be guilty of it all.
    God the Father poured out His wrath and hatred toward sin on His Son and had pleasure (Isaiah 53:10) in doing so, in that, He was completely satisfied in Christ as a Sacrifice that met all the demands of His strict Law and inflexible justice. Christ finished the work of paying the penalty of the Law and then said " It is finished" (John 19:30). He secured salvation for all God’s chosen people that would even be born. His resurrection is evidence of the acceptance of His sacrifice to the Father.
    The combined work of His obedience to the Law and His obedience unto death on the cross was considered establishing righteousness. This is what one of the Old Testament prophets prophesied as "bringing in an everlasting righteousness" (Daniel 9:24) as Christ died effectually and exclusively for those chosen of God before the world began (Eph 1:4).
    This righteousness is what God imputes to His people in the context of giving the life to believe in Christ. This puts them in a state called "Justification" and as a result they are eternally secure, in Christ. This is the gospel (Rom 1:16-17).
    All this takes place in such a way to show God as both a God of justice and a Savior. This is how grace reigns through righteousness (Rom 5:21)

    Judo is for lazy guys. It's all about wrestling.

      Judo can be a really intense workout, but I wish I'd done wrestling instead. On the upside, it does help with the mindset of longevity in training and the breakfall training is useful for normal life.
