  • Off to the tracks on a tip, we barely caught this fast-moving B244-24 empty potash train leaving Port Tampa! Heading northbound under sunny skies, the power lineup featured a beautiful combination of CN 3344, NS 4507, and CN 2819, as these locomotives rushed to their next destination. The sunny day made for a perfect backdrop to capture this rare and exciting moment.
    *Factoid:*
Railroad companies often use each other's locomotives in a practice known as 'power sharing.' This cooperative effort ensures that trains can continue moving efficiently across vast rail networks, even when one company’s locomotives aren’t readily available. The exchange is typically based on hours of service, where locomotives accumulate 'horsepower hours' (HPH). These hours represent the use of another railroad’s engine, and companies will balance the usage either by returning equivalent HPHs or by financial compensation. This practice keeps the railroads running smoothly and helps prevent bottlenecks in the transportation of goods.
It was a thrill to barely catch this train just in time, and the combination of CN and NS power made for an awesome railfanning experience.
