- Before Dazed and Confused, there was American Graffiti! The 1973 film American Graffiti brought the essence of car cruising culture from the 1950's to life on the big screen for all to enjoy! American Graffiti has a ton of great classic cars to drool over, but the one that stands out like the sun in the sky is John Milner's custom bright yellow 1932 Ford V8 hot rod! John's supped up hot rod is the long standing fastest and undefeated most bad ass ride of the town and valley and he aims to keep that title!

I am 82 years old now but when I was 17 I had a 5 window coupe just like this one. I bought it with money I saved from delivering newspapers. I had two uncles that ran automotive shops that helped me build it into a nice little rod. Mine was painted the old Phillips 66 tan with orange wheels like on the Phillips 66 sign back in those days. The wheels had chrome rings and baby moon hub caps. It had 9.20 X16 tires on the rear with bobbed fenders and motorcycle tires on the front. The first two engines we built for it were modified Ford flat heads and later we found a 1950 Oldsmobile rocket engine in a demolished car that was in a junk yard. My uncle made an adaptor plate and we put that engine in my coupe. The engine was modified slightly with a different camshaft and three carburetors ( Speed parts were very limited in those days except for Ford V/8's and Chevy and GMC six cylinders). I thought I had a real runner until Chevrolet came out with their V/8 in 1955. A guy from another shop, that one of my uncles knew, put a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette engine in a 1938 Chevy coupe and dusted me good. What fun, those were the days and I will never forget them.!!! I still have pictures of that old car and wouldn't part with them for anything.

Great cars great memories and crazy accidents when we were growing up near china lake. After the navy I bought a single vent porsha coupe as seen in this movie scene….fond times.

I saw this movie in 1973... I was 11...today I’m still a car guy and proud of it..building ..tinkering..cruising..thanks to that 55 Chevy and the 32 coupe and those open headers.
Same age as myself, my father always bought his new cars with the biggest engine offered. My mother was a lead foot as well which all of my brothers and sisters inherited. Hot cars were always in our driveway. I have kept the tradition alive.
I saw this movie as a kid and loved it. I always liked cars, but, my parents had nothing cool or fast. At a family reunion in the mid '70's one of my much older cousins, a Vietnam vet, showed up with a '67 Pontiac GTO. He noticed me walking around it admiring it and he said, 'want a ride in it ? Of course I said yes. The car sounded great and I knew I was in something special, when he stepped on the gas and rowed through the gears with authority my destiny as a hot rodder was sealed.
My dad was a teenager in the mid to late 50s... What a great time it must have been. The cars were cool,income was good,cheap gas. Times were(seemingly) soooo much easier than when I was a teenager in the 90s.
Better than now couldn’t have been Now we got 100k trucks for sale at 8 percent and Brandon’s in office 🙄🙄

My favorite part of that movie when he removes the header plugs. Miller's attitude and the sound of his car symbolizes all business no more messing around. Loved that scene since I was a little kid.

This was my Dad’s era. He graduated in 62’, wore the white t-shirt and blue jeans with the flat top haircut. He raced a souped up 50’ Mercury and won more than he lost. Dad passed away from Alzheimer’s this past August.

Those were great years to be young. I wouldn’t want to be a teen today, but if I would love to go back in time and relive those days again.
When I was a kid my dad must have drove me to the movie theater a dozen times. I just wanted to see the car's. I was about 13 now I'm 60 and I still love it. Classic!!!
I watch this movie once a month. One of my all time favorites. The cast, the cars and the music. What a night!

Yep, that movie paralleled my life... right down to the unknown blonde in the sportscar I'd pass going the other way daily on my way to work... and again on way home... in 1960's-70's... I driving my '65 GTO convertible... which I should have kept...

Never gets old. I saw it as a kid now own the DVD - it definitely contributed to my hot rod love including my current 57.
This is the movie that brought hot rods and car cruising back.
I saw Paul Le Mat signing autographs at a car show around 2010. It was July, 150°out, and he's sitting at a table 50' from the nearest shade, all by himself. I felt so bad for the guy. Most of the people there had no idea who he was, and probably thought a homeless guy had stumbled into the fairgrounds. He looked like he'd had a very rough life, or at least a VERY rough night before, and appeared to be absolutely miserable. I don't blame him. That image comes to mind every time I'm reminded of American Graffiti.
my best friend Jim could have been "Milners" twin brother, both are gear heads, Jim passed several year ago, but everytime is see American Grafitti I think of Jim

American Graffiti became an American Muscle Car fan's cult classic, and inspired a lot of street racing. Thumb up for this clip.
The racing was long before the movie... in fact, the movie was the tail end of it... the drive-in restaurants with car hop girls had all closed where we sat and talked cars to everybody...
The street racing was about over by the time this movie came out. It was more mid-60s to the very early 70s. The movie was supposed to be set in 1964. Back then boulevard cruising was still a big deal. I was in Orange County in the mid 60s and we picked up most the racing at Oscars in Santa Ana and the big races were out by the Sugar Beat plant.
Street racing and cruising lasted way beyond the 60's or 70's, just maybe not in California....
I cruised Lansdale and Pottstown Pa. in the 80’s in my 70 Six Pack 4-speed Charger R/T.
@Duca I'd have called it the dawn of the muscle car era. While some people debate the first muscle car a 58 impala with a solid lifter, 3 deuce 409 is if anything on the cusp of things to come.
Maybe instead of calling American Graffiti an American Muscle car fan's cult classic they cloud have just said American gear head or something more general but the original comment is still valid.

I saw one at a Cruise In that looked better than the original,the interior did for sure.Would Love to have had that Beautiful Coupe.

I've been an American muscle car lover since I can remember. My first car was a 66 chev impala. Babe hauled ass.
Classic cars everywhere in my family. There is nothing sexier than hearing an American muscle car coming from 2 or 3 blocks away.
John Milner's car is just as sexy as he is. What a total turn on. Rumbling sound make my ears sing. Love it.
American Graffiti is a great movie. Just wished they'd have had more races with Milner's car.
The scene after the crash with all those power poles reminded me of the movie "Seven".
50 yrs later and still one of the most influential movies ever made.

When this movie came out in the theater's, l knew l had found myself. I wanted to be a "Monkey Wrenching Gear Head Greaser ".
I loved Oldies from the 50's & 60's. When l got my first job and first pay check l went and bought me my first home stereo record player and my very first record album "American Graffiti ". I felt so proud that l had earned my new record player working for Standard Oil Company. Known as Chevron now. Back then we would provide full service to our customers. Fill gas , clean windows & mirrors, check tire pressure, and check radiator & engine oil. Those were the day's of customer service. My boss was nice enough to let us work on our rides when buisness was slow. We'd get the car's ready for cruising the strip on Friday & Saturday nights. Those were simpler times and very memorable. Love this movie and the cast ( except for one of the "Pharrows"- - the ugly tall one chewing gum that wanted to drag Kurt around with a car) 😎
The Merc's at that time, even today are a popular good looking car.

The first time I watched it, my daily driver was a Western Flyer 10-speed bicycle.A few years later,it played at the local drive-in.When the movie let out,everybody was doing burnouts and power-slides,including me in my '67 Impala.
Met Paul. Candy and Bo....... been some yrs ago. As many times as I've seen this movie was pretty damn neat seeing them in person. All super down to earth.....good stuff

Currently in Walmart waiting at the registers for the lovely wife to finish her shopping, watching this video and straight up getting goose bumps listening to those two cars roar. Damn, George Lucas and whoever was in charge of sound design nailed those scenes. This movie was lightning in a bottle and it was Hollywood when it was at it's best. At the same time, the studio had no faith in this film and even muddled with it, which shows what they knew. GL would undo their edits later on.
What happened to America??? Simpler times.

I don't mean to sound rude, but to me Hollywood Knights is just a poor man's American Grafitti.
Robert M. Trolinder the cobra in that movie was actually owned by the asians he raced. It was a original cobra an that was the only way the owner would allow the car to be raced in the movie. They did not want anyone else racing it
I'm more of a two lane blacktop guy, but I have all 3 movies on DVD, watch them from time to time.
The sixties was the greatest time, so glad it was my time.
Heard an interview with Guitarist Jeff Beck recently, he saw the movie when it was still in the theaters, got completely obsessed with old ford hot rods,( still is)actually contacted Lucas and tried to get that coupe. Lucas decided to sell it to someone else. Beck made his own anyway.
Jeff Beck loves tinkering with cars.
One time when I was in the Marines infantry and out in the middle of the Mediterranean this movie was on every night for about seven times

The image the Pharaoh's car projects is great, chopped Mercs rule. But this was a very quickly done movie car. It is a very poor chop, roof should flow to the deck lid, no link. But I loved the car for the same reason. It looked bad at night.

Went to the theater 7 times to see this movie, couldn't get enough
I bought a 55 Delray 210 that looked just like the one Richard Ruth built for this movie except I had no hood scoop. but a perfect job radiusing the rear wheel wells. it was built for 1/4 mile bracket racing and I bought it from a fella that did not appreciate the car like me.(cheap for 1977). most of the parts were stolen while I was away in the Army. just a body shell and frame on blocks.

I love when he backs out of Garage and goes to the gas pump's. Wish the gas station was a Sunoco station and puts in 280 from the pump. The people will know what I am talking about if they lived then. Eythl gas was King! SHAWN

I was nine years old when "Surfin Safari" was a hit. I hated it at the time. Couldn't stand Mike Love's nasal voice. But in time I became a fanatic Beach Boys fan and I now love "Surfin Safari".

I heard many years ago that the original film was three hours long but that it was cut down to a length that was concidered more appropriate at the cinema.
If it's true i know many in my generation who ran to the cinema to see it.

American Graffiti filmed in Petaluma California the drag race was an old Adobe Road outside of Petaluma 116. I live in Sonoma County I grew up in Sonoma County I was living there when they filmed American Graffiti but I lived in Windsor friends of mine cars were in that movie. And I also seen Paulie class and a bag of that Pinto I was driving truck one that got passed me I could see from the street light in the back and I also seen where he buried her that night I was coming out from a lumber mill right across the road from there then I lived in Ukiah and he came into his truck stop try to get in shower. At that time my wife was here working as cashier he was trying to hitchhike going north for they caught him Redwood Valley. American Graffiti but it's and I've seen while growing up there I've seen filming combat Westside Road few miles from where I lived yes cursive Healdsburg California. And for about 4 days I work for Raymond Burr I don't Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. These are just a few am I American Graffiti.. one more thing doing construction work in Pasadena California. In the motel really small please we woke up to him two people hammering loud noises the the room below us they were filming the scene from The Incredible Hulk and I shook hands with Bill Bixby the Hulk was not there not seen it was cold Magic and they left their screenplay on top of our diesel truck tires. This is my husband my story people I've met Wolfman Jack live on keep the tires rolling and the music rocking. Sincerely chief
The good old days 50s beautiful cars and music
I was born in Modesto Ca. in 54. My Aunt was walking down the street when the Cop car lost its rear end that night. I used to listen to my transistor radio late at night and it was always tuned to the Wolfman Jack show when he was the DJ in Modesto. My aunt was a friend to the Milner family back when John was Killed. She was an insurance agent to the family. My Grandfather owned the Paradise road gas station back in town and all of the kids used to buy gas from him when they were racing out there. We lived in Turlock at the time.

I saw this car at a car show in Denver during the mid 1980s. Up close it's pretty rough.
Such a great movie and its sequel was pretty hot too. Toad came into his character there. Excellent porpcorn on a weekend double feature. Highly recommended! My favorite car of the whole movie? The 1958 tri tail light chevrolet. What a beautiful design. And I am not a chevrolet lover either!
The 58 was such an underrated car. I believe that it was the first year for the 348 engine and it was debuted in the Ranchero and Impala. The sound was so different...

But he wrecked the thing at the end of the flick. If he handled the Falcon like he did the '55 he would have been smeared all over that asteroid field. (No caps lock needed)

Again, that line NEVER made sense to me. Watch the race over and over again you'll see what I mean. Milner had it from the start!
