Will The Bosch Power Tools X-Lock Grinder Tool-Free Interface Take Over As The Industry Standard

  • Bosch Power Tool's new X-Lock angle grinder lock interface makes wheel exchanges incredibly fast and simple!
Bosch holds this as the ultimate changing system for grinders, the Bosch X-Lock grinder interface ejects wheels with just a lever pull, and fresh wheels can be attached without the need for any other tools. The X-Lock grinding wheels are also compatible with grinders that have standard 7/8″ mounts.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Check out Bosch's X-Lock Offerings
    ► Bosch 4-1/2" X-Lock Ergonomic Angle Grinder amzn.to/35RCHya
    ► Bosch 3 In. Cup Wire Wheel X-LOCK amzn.to/2TjCC3V
► Bosch Straight Cutting Disc for Metal X-LOCK amzn.to/3846lSC
    ► BOSCH 4-1/2 In. Wire Wheel X-LOCK amzn.to/30nwB7J
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
There is no doubt that the new Bosch X-Lock interface works. Wheel changes are fast, efficient and secure. We cannot argue that this is a serious upgrade from the current interface we all use. The question is will all the other manufacturers start to offer this?
In order for the Bosch Power Tool's X-Lock interface to live, it must become the new norm for all the manufacturers, not just Bosch. Aftermarket consumable makers must also see this as the only way to make new products. Premiums for this interface must remain small.
Will other companies license this from Bosch Power Tools? What strategy do they have in place for the X-Lock to take over?
There are a lot of questions that will be answered in the next year as we see where this new interface takes us. Let us know what you think in the comments!

From a contractors perspective I love the idea. Cutting rebar and such I've spent more time replacing wheels than cutting. I'm also alyways at a jobsite, not in a shop, so I don't just have a fleet of grinders at my disposal, and I do switch different wheels on and off frequently. X lock would be a huge time saver for me.

I bought the Bosch X-Lock. I love it, mine is the 18v cordless model. You no longer have to carry the special tool with you to change out disk. I noticed that you put the conventional disk on by hand. also the old style wire wheel has a nut to lock it on, you don't need that anymore. It's quick and easy for all wheels.

I just got a Makita grinder and didn't realize it had this system. After playing with it a bit I like this system so much better than using an open end or a pin wrench to change accessories that I'm keeping it. A quick search shows Diablo makes accessories so I'm not too panicked over the cost of consumables.

There is no question that this will take off if other disc and grinder companies start to license the feature from Bosch. Especially since the X-lock wheels are backwards compatible with older grinders. The only downside is that older wheels are not backwards compatible to X-lock. So if you are just a DIYer with a decent supply of discs of various types and decide to buy a new X-lock grinder, you would need to buy all new discs.

Hmmmm. I'm wonder if this will go the way of the Bosch introduced T-lock blades for jigsaws Or maybe it will disappear like the Bosch SDS-plus, or SDS-max hammer drill interface. Or how about that star-lock oscillating saw interface that both Fein and Bosch teamed up to impose on the market? You never see those around. If past is prologue, and let's hope that it is, they'll be everywhere. Unward and upward. Better. Better. Best.

SDS has disappeared? I haven't noticed.
I do realize my experience is limited as I'm merely a 31 years old DIYer/home improver and first time I've ever used a power hammer was 15 years ago (it was a rental Makita 5kg class, with SDS max interface).
But as for rotory/breaking/combi hammers, apart from very large demolition hammers (15kg class and above, where hex shaft is the norm), all I've ever seen in shops, or in hands of other people, or used myself, was either SDS plus (2 to 5 kg class) or SDS max (5 kg class and bigger). I don't think I've ever seen any non SDS machine (in that class) or accessory in my life. In fact, the first time I've even heard of something other than SDS - a spline drive - was from Brian here... briefly mentioning it in his video... which was about the SDS system. Ironic.
As for starlock, it's much younger than SDS, but apart from Bosch and Fein, Festool also adopted it, and now, only recently, Makita went on board with Starlock as well. And I think more will follow suit.

    • @macvos
      @macvos 2 года назад

@@marsdeimos4301 I think he was being sarcastic. All those quickchange connectors were objectively better and user friendly and were quickly adopted by competitors. Makita has already adopted X-Lock on several of their grinders. Bosch and Makita probably cover more than half of the powertool market here in Europe, so I'm sure X-Lock will stay around. The US is a bit different, so there the success will depend on DeWalt and Milwaukee. Fortunately for the rest of the world, a standard can be a success without taking over the US by storm (although that would help massively of course).

Brian, I tell you why this isn't going to be a "Big" thing imho. The Consumables, Grinding Wheels, Cutoff Wheels, etc is way too much money for the X Locks. I am a Welder/Fabricator, and I use Premium brand Consumables such as Pferd mostly, as well as Walter Abrasives, and Weiler. Even with using these Top Shelf Consumables, they are way cheaper than the Bosch X Locks. I buy them by the Case, which cuts the price down some, but even if I buy a "special disc" and only purchase 1 or 2, they are still cheaper than X Lock. I mean seriously, who in the world is gonna pay $6 bucks for a 4-1/2" cutoff disc??? That is Crazy! Maybe some DIY'er or Home Owner who doesn't know any better, and they probably only use a few of them per year may pay this price, but when you are using Grinders all day everyday, you can't be paying that much for something as simple as a cutoff disc. I go thru as many as 10 or more Cutoff Discs per day in the Shop, several times per week. I would say on the average busy week, I'm probably going thru at least 30, but sometimes as many as 40 - 50 cutoffs. 50 × 6 = $300.00, and we haven't even touched on Flap Dics, which is just about tied for the most used Consumable in a Welding/Fab Shop, and as you know Flap Discs are considerably more expensive than Cutoff Wheels.
I own 13 Grinders. All of my Corded Grinders are Metabo, my Cordless are a mixture of Metabo, Milwaukee, Dewalt. I have owned 1 Bosch, and it didn't survive 2 months. Bosch does make quality Tools though.
From my experience if you want a Grinder that can stand up to Industrial type abuse, day in, and day out, Metabo is the Grinder.
All of mine have the "quick change" feature that requires not Tool. You just spin the Nut off with your Fingers, and you can do this with Welding Gloves on. You can do this in about 15 - 20 seconds. Not all that much slower than the Bosch.
Milwaukee Cordless also have a "Tool less" change feature, although it is difficult to perform with Gloves on.
When you have an entire stable of Grinders, you just keep them all setup with every type of Consumable that you use.
    Sorry for rambling on.

i dont find grinders consumable, yet to burn one out i typically buy name brand and 12amp5" not the 6-7amp toys from harbourfreight, my favourite grinder also my first one must have 500+ hours use, the brushes are almost gone and bearings getting sloppy but its paid for itself 10fold and im not easy on them im the guy who leans on them to see how fast itll grind and how hot itll get,

@@smellysam hilty is definitely reliable, but theyre reliably average idk if they have any cordless tools at the top of the pack, even their name brand cordless rotary/hammer drills are second to both dewalts and milwuakees, havent used too many a few used hiltis free from throw aways but the three options i see are milwuakee makita and ridgid if youre a professional id steer clear of ridgid no time to argue over warranties and if your into automotive makita isnt an option

It's a novelty at best. The only area I could see it being a "time saver" would be in a production environment. But in that case, it's more advantageous to just have two, or more grinders with different wheels and switch grinders.... Not wheels. I personally just don't see the justification for a premium price on a consumable like this when the grinders themselves are cheap enough to buy more than one.

It's an objectively better connection. It's quicker, more resistant to user error and therefore safer and hardly more expensive in production. It would be a shame to stick with the old inferior connection, just because of initial higher pricing (early adopter premium). Nobody wants to manually lock a hammer drill bit instead of using SDS Plus/Max and nobody wants to use a screw to secure a jigsaw blade instead of SDS / T shank anymore. The same goes for grinders in my opinion. Go with the better connector and prices will come down automatically.

At first I thought about it that way I was like ok grinders are turning into iPhone with their different charging system but I remember at work when they were losing the nut for grinders and the back flange when they would put on specialty disks and it was a pain in the ass buying more. Yes people got their ass chewed plus we were working over night building bridges so we couldn't just go to a hardware store and buy one

ok so the thing has been out for a while, i cant see that its catching on, people aren't rushing to make x-lock consumables, i haven't seen anyone else using x-lock. also i can report that it does get jammed occasionally when the grining dust gets into the mechanism

You can literally just use the leverage of the disk to break the arbor nut loose or tighten it. I see no advantage to this over a standard 7/8 disk.

Some types of disc are prone to accelerated wear or even damage when doing that. Also, X-Lock provides much better protection against user error, increasing workspace safety.

It amazes me how many people depend on the tool to remove wheels. You know all you have to do is press the lock button, grip the disc and spin counter clockwise to loosen locknut and remove disk. Installation is the opposite. Ive been using this method with my Metabos and Bosch forever. Never once used a removal wrench. Are yall just new to griders or what?

If it costs more for cutting discs it wont take, all you need on job sites is a block of wood 🪵 to shock the old nut type off & thats if you havent bothered to purchase the flip lock quick rekease nut accesory 🤷🏼‍♂️.
The old style grinder still holds the full range use versatility interchangeable disc acceptance, push comes to shove if you come unstuck for cutting wheels on a building site they will be easier to find.
Plus any old 9" 12" worn down discs can be worn down then used in your 5" 6" grinder 115mm 4 1/2" inch grinders are useless for that reason, just my opinion 🤗.
Dont fall for it its another pay hike wall 🧱 lol.
If they really wanted to serve convenience they / them would include the quick release lock nuts as standard???
So they cut there costs by not having to thread 🔩 a mount point & nut connection then we all get pushed🫸 to premium discs that wont accept round connections on the new tools 😂🤣😭, mug us all off for disc prices 😙 you 🫵🏻 know it 🕵️ & i know it 🫠🙃🥴...
