Jon has to be one of the best interviewers I have seen. His comments and insights add to the discuss, rather than distracting or derailing the discussion.
Please John Stewart, run for President one day. We need smart, thoughtful, charismatic people with good morals to run this country and inspire others like you to make the choice to attempt achieving leadership roles as well. You Sir could be the savior of the country and I truly believe that 🙌 ❤
The Good Place is truly one of THE best shows I have ever watched. It was brilliant and thoughtful and educational and funny all at the same time. Unique and hilarious.
Don't put people on pedestals, that's my motto. Yeah they're great, successful people. But they're just normal people that happen to be hard workers and very good at what they do.
With speaking of sadness as it relates to comedians, Jon Stewart is right. How do I know? I’ve been watching their performances since I was 13 and would stay up late on school nights to watch Johnny Carson for the stand-up comedians he had on his show. To make an entire auditorium laugh was the most wonderful thing. (Even if later I found out about canned laughter, it was still wonderful).
I haven't seen the show (yet) but the delight in creating a fun show about ethics and the afterlife mentioned in the conversation reminds so much of Dante's Divine Comedy which is (forget Dan Brown) a delightful read, full of humour, serenity and empathy.
The Good Place is one of my favorite shows. And to think I only watched it because of Kirsten Bell. Turned into loving the show more than the actors, and they were all great. Ted Danson was amazing in that role. Also, anyone know how to contact Michael Schur, have a great idea for a feel good show, not really comedy, but ethical and philosophical. Sounds right up his alley.
I came for Mose but was shocked to see an intellectual who has deeper understanding of life and people that I'm even ready for, mostly due to the fact that I'm absolutely immature and hopelessly behind on things like that. Eff you, Michael Schur. How dare you revealing it to myself how shallow I actually am?
Now imagine this guy, talking about Aristoteles, Socrates, Plato, while growing Mose's neck beard. The first time they showed Mose, it was his real beard
Love this duo. PSA for anyone wanting to namedrop a company that imploded (thanks to the unethical behavior of relatively few people): Don’t say “Arthur Andersen Consulting”, cuz there was no such thing. It was Arthur Andersen (comprised of the Tax & Audit divisions - this is where all the 💩 happened) and then Andersen Consulting (business consultants) … two separate (but related) organizations. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. #TheMoreYouKnow
I loved the show at the beginning... but in later series I was lost and confused for some reason! :( ... from the interview, now I understand why I got confused.
Using water during a drought and not getting vaccinated are selfish acts that cause harm to the community, but riding the bus without paying is predicated on necessity most of the time. It would only be a valid moral question if everyone's ability to pay and need to travel were equal. The bus should be free for those for whom paying is a hardship. I have seen cops pull a mom with small children off the bus, as well as old people and other unfortunates, and it was obscene. The ethical thing to do would clearly have been to let them ride in peace.
Very true. But I think he had to use that example since most of the philosophical experiments/questions he mentioned were about the trolley problem. I think he was referring to an action that doesn't cost anything if only very few do it (and the people doing it know it) and would destroy a system/principle if more people were to do it. For example, in a poor corrupted country most poor people take the bus. The rich travel in luxury vehicles, helicopters and private jets. If half the people didn't pay their share because they thought they should get to ride for free then either the bus route will be canceled or the bus fair will double in price harming those who always paid even though they were also poor. The solution is not freeloading but demanding better policies ie a fine should be analogous to your income, as should taxes.
@@Tao_Tology To whome would suffering be instilled? A number on a page failing to rise by 50 cents isnt actually immoral unless it caused the bus system to shutdown or something
@@Justin-tp1mx The effect, or one negative effect, is that less income is collected by the local transport authority or company. It doesn't mean it is a **bigger** negative effect than the possible positive effect for the person getting to travel.........but it is still there.

Regarding "Eventually you go back to being a bug" Read Joseph Campbell's description of "The humbling of Indra" Where the Indra (having taken hundreds of lifetimes to work up to that status is being a major pain to the workmen building and tearing down his infinite palace, is told that the endless stream of ants that swarm the room are "former indras all, and sells his stuff and becomes a Yogi.
I makes me so sad when you can't clip vids. I want to give credit to the poster but can't. I have to download/screencapture and repost taking credit despite I can put a note under my post but will I remember? who knows....
In the 70's there was a "living bible" where they updated all the references for example "the jonah and the whale story became "Behold the great leviathan, for his belly is full of scales and he sallies forth like a steamroller." Likewise the Aristotle reference should be Jonah Hill or Seth Rogan who the kids think of as "wise old geezers".
Weha!!❤️💕❤️💕 it’s a really special place that I ended up living in for a while, but I grew up in Washington CT. Growing up in CT there’s a lot I took for granted about it, (like always wishing there was more to do) but there’s a whole lot to love too.
Good example how there are still good people in this world who do care about morals and believe in fairness and it's not all about ME. They still do exist and if we are lucky sitting in the same room as ourselves. Is it better to teach by example by helping the person who is being bullied or it better to let them learn how to defend for themselves? My thought is it all depends if they see a good example and they know a bit more for the next time, if their is one. Here are two good examples for life in general, sure not perfect but who is ;)
When the Libertarian concepts were accepted in America, we as a culture started this "I got mine." Lots of liberals in Jon's generation as older left their beliefs and became dedicated libertarians. They've added one more sentence since Trumpism. "I got mine. F you."
Mullaney and Bill Hader was even funnier. They are both whip smart and have such a history of making each other laugh. Same as Mulaney and Kroll, but Bill is such an easy laugh!
@beep boop lol I’m not saying i was misled or anything clearly it’s just two comedians being conversational I was just making a joke about how Mulaney and Kroll on 92Y is all time great stuff and it makes everything else seem less funny
"Picking up shit" was why I got fired from Target. But they told me I was too slow.... And now I know I was unwilling to conform and wanted to hang out with comedians and assholes.
Jon is a vegan! I'm so very thankful he interjected with the question about animals in philosophy, but at some point you really do need to start saying the dreaded v-word: veganism. Animal liberation is a stepping stone for human liberation. Adopting a boycott of meat, dairy, and eggs not only deletes the need for most of the pharma trade, but also essentially deletes nonhuman animals from the being the lowest economic class. The ramifications are more than just socio-political. Animal agriculture consume 1/3 of our fossil fuels. Animal ag is the leading cause of habitat loss and species extinction. Growing the crops required to feed over 10 billion livestock is driving our planet's sixth mass extinction event. Ever wonder why all cowboys are conservatives? It's because their entire way of life is based on the violent domination of animals, specifically exploiting the female reproductive systems. Sound familiar yet? Are you ready to talk about the gas chambers still in use? The screams? Talking about morality without touching on how easy it is to be vegan is actually impressively unethical.

Adored!!!!!! The Good Place!!!!!!!!!. It has changed my life. I bow to this man, Mr Shur!.
The Good Place is truly one of THE best shows I have ever watched. It was brilliant and thoughtful and educational and funny all at the same time. Unique and hilarious.
How have we been so fortunate to live at the same time as Jon Stewart and Michael Shur? Maybe we don't deserve them, but I am so glad they are here.
Don't put people on pedestals, that's my motto.
Yeah they're great, successful people. But they're just normal people that happen to be hard workers and very good at what they do.
'Comedy isn't here to heal you. It's not here to hurt you. It's just here.' Brilliant. 👫
Jon Stewart is easily one of the best interviewers ever. He guides the discussion is such a natural and interesting way
He's one of the best _people_ ever!
Agreed. This was great!
Schur: Do you have any idea how fun it is to write jokes for Steve Carrell?
John: …Yes… Yes I do.
Two of my favorites in one place. Daily Show, Parks and Rec, and Good Place are all top 10 TV shows ever for me.
So brilliant Michael Schur! So Chidi of you. I really love your show, and watch it repeatedly, in no particular order. Lol, John. instant karma!
After reading "How to Be Perfect" last week, I've watched several Michael Schur interviews. They were all great, but this one is splendid! 🎉
This is where I'm at, 10 months later. ❤
Jon Stewart is one of the greatest men ever!
Thank you 92nd Street Y for their brilliant conversations.
Brilliant and hilarious discussion. Love Jon Stewart, and Mike Schur has been behind some of the greatest comedies in TV history.
Lovely to hear I'm not the only person who misses Leslie Knope ♥
I thought Jon was going to be the interviewee. Pleasant surprise. Next time✌🏼🤗😎
Fabulous conversation! Glad I stumbled on your discussion. 😊
I love this show so much. I’ve watched it multiple times and gain so much from it - literally different things each time. It has so many layers
With speaking of sadness as it relates to comedians, Jon Stewart is right. How do I know? Extraordinary men. Caring for animals and the world!
This interview is delightful and illuminating but also FUCK I miss Jon and it was so good to hear him share his thoughts.
he has a show that is on Apple tv now but i think the show is pretty mediocre compared to his tenure on the daily show....
Every time I watch this video, I gain a little bit of faith in humanity.❤
Wow! That was time very well spent. You gentlemen are both very funny yet more importantly, intelligent kind and insightful. Thank you!
Wonderful interview! And The Office, Parks & Rec, and The Good Place are three of my favorites! 🙏 Thank you!
Jon Stewart: wise man...a sage... love his perspective

Beautiful. great conversation and, candidly: leadership. good stuff. :-)
Great conversation. Have loved Jon for decades nice to meet this writer
This. Was. Amazing. Thanks for uploading it!
Jon, we love you no matter what!
Thanks for this-was both engagingly funny & deeply thoughtful, really enjoyed their conversation.
This is a great discussion. I would love to hear Schur's take on the de facto immortality in Altered Carbon but I can guess from 49:00!
Might be my favorite 92nd interview yet.
yay
fantastic... hilarious...brilliant
you both have such great insight
better because of listening
thank you
Thanks John...and Michael Schur Et ....Stewart! Al.🙂

You could still argue that it 'causes harm to the community' or more specifically the local income from fares.

Jon is fabulous
Leslie Knope is great. I feel like we all know a Leslie knope from school or work. They’re EXHAUSTING, but in a beautiful way.
6 and a half minutes in, and the Cones of Dunshire makes so much more sense
Schur's facial expressions are so like Leslie Knope. I wonder how much Amy Poehler was playing him in that role!
Lovely

The “very middle class” town he grew up in is west Hartford ct, which it should be noted, is one of the wealthiest suburbs in Connecticut
I think his point still stands tho. No one there works for Netflix. They do work for Aetna though.

Anyone else notice how his mannerisms are so much like Lesley Schoop.
I thought I was the only one to do the 'car game.' My version is closer to John's but with a lot of screaming and cursing.
Mr Schur make sure their names are in the glossary, so Hollywood kids go glossary and then the pages you want them to read
