There’s a great scene on “The West Wing” about the case for reparations. Paraphrasing, “Take out a dollar bill. Turn it over. It says, ‘He favors our endeavor’ See how the pyramid is unfinished? This country is a work in progress.”

This is a wonderful discussion. The topic early on about giving other the benefit of the doubt, that maybe the guy that just cut you off in traffic is rushing to the hospital, that reminds me of "This Is Water" by David Foster Wallace. Search that here on RUclips and listen to that speech by DFW - it's wonderful advice for everyday life, and it parallels this discussion very well.

To remove cursing is one thing, but this was a discussion on cursing. Which just makes it confusing when they are removed

The example from the book, about "Deb climbing to the roof of the tram". Actually in such cases people die instantly, because of electric shock. Hopefully nobody decides to try it, after reading a book :)

So Michael is proud of himself, because he tried to turn the money he owed for a personal car accident into a good will effort, to look good on his part, then someone was like that is really pretentious of you, idiot, don't do that, so he reverses on that idea. Then he goes on to say that he's proud he didn't 'doxx' the guy, like no you shouldn't of doxxed him! This dude is living on a planet that is light years away from us poor people.

It's good that he takes responsibility for his mistaken thinking, but it's a bit appalling that he's got over $100 million and he's calling $800 an enormous sum of money. That would automatically mean that he realizes that he is hoarding a god-like sum of money, and no one should ever have $100 million accessible to them. They should be worth no more than a certain ceiling limit of millions... Maybe not even millions. If he's interested in ethics, it's hard to understand how he can justify having that much money in his own name. After a certain amount, the rest just should be distributed to those who suffer and haven't access to resources

I watched this because I saw his book yesterday and am evaluating whether I want to invest the time in reading it.
Anyone who can’t see how dangerous AOC’s ideas are or defends her, is not on my side politically. Sure, congressmen should not insult each other, even when they deserve some sort of criticism.
…It is no longer ok to listen to certain music. “Dixie” is considered an evil song regardless of its merits as a tune (even if Lincoln liked it).
I don’t know what exactly the Commonwealth Club is but California appears to be poorly governed lately and is no model for the rest of the country.
This guy seems to be a comedian who came to philosophy rather than a philosopher who became a comedian but he does seem to know ethics.
A person who opposes having children is an antinatalist. That would be the opposite of Catholic doctrine for one thing. I believe that having children is no virtue in itself and paying people to have children ($3,000 tax credit etc) may seem kind but it rewards many of the very people who should not have children.
I don’t worry about how Jeff Bezos spends his money. I do worry about George Soros.

I don’t think he was for or against AOC’s ideas. When I listened, I got the impression that he specifically was not okay with one person calling another person and ‘effing b’ as he put it. I think he’d argue that no one should call anyone those words. Maybe he politically identifies with her, maybe he doesn’t, but I don’t think that’s what he was talking about

The main problem is you have is that you are unable to bear the new narratives that are emerging from newer points of view. No longer the white upper classes have a monopoly over history and culture. With the advent of internet, it has become easier to challenge the hegemony of the white dominated culture being imposed on everyone. You want me to keep believing that America is a fundamentally a good country because you have greatly benefited from it, but guess what, there are other people in the world who have had different experiences and would like to tell their stories and you no longer have the power to restrict them.
