As to the flag in our sanctuary. I always thought that should not have been up in the front of our church. And so much more as our country embraces evil and enshrines it in law. Some of the churches I've been in make a big deal of national holidays too, veterans celebrations is one of them. . . It just never sat right with me. Its one thing to show honor to whom honor is due but show a little humility here. I believe the local church should be a sanctuary from the world and its affairs. To mention what's going on in the world from the pulpit yes and to teach differently yes. But leave it at that. It takes discerning and educated Christians to know where to draw the line.

5:40 The charge of racism has become so prevalent that I'm pretty much immune to it, though I'm not sufficiently in the public eye to gather much attention anyway. But my response to such an accusation (as of christian nationalism or anything else that's been torn away from any objective meaning) is threefold: (1) define it precisely, (2) show me from scripture why it's wrong, and then (3) show me how I'm doing it.
16:20 There's a strong belief among evangelicals that "this world is not my home," which is true as far as it goes. But in many cases, further fueled by an eschatology that says Christ is going to return any day now (and the world's going to be on an inexorable and ever-accelerating road to hell in a handbasket until then), that leads to a complete disengagement from the world. We're living as strangers and exiles (1 Peter 1)? Indeed we are. And what are we to do with the land to which we are exiled? We are to seek its welfare (Jeremiah 29). Among the ways to seek its welfare is to seek to have its laws consistent with God's moral law--the second use of the law, as it were--because God is good, and his law is an expression of himself and therefore also good. But it seems many Christians can't conceive of any reason to follow God's law that doesn't amount to "salvation by works," and they know that's wrong, so out goes the law entirely.

I watched this video and both appreciate and agree with some of the points you make. So thank you for taking the time to make and post this video. However, I think you mistakenly conflate nationalism with patriotism when in fact the two are not the same. I am a Christian and I consider myself patriotic in that I love my country and want the US and its citizens to succeed and and prosper. But I am not a nationalist, whether Christian or otherwise, and I reject that label. There is a reason that nationalism fell into disuse following the World War II and has only been resurrected in recent years. Nationalism was a major factor in both World Wars, and most especially World War II. Those who lived through those war years learned the hard lessons of what an embrace of nationalism can lead to. In a recent video you said that you had very little knowledge about the World Wars. Perhaps learning more about these wars would give you a better perspective on the dangers of nationalism.
I also watched a video today by two proponents of Christian Nationalism both of whom come from a reformed perspective. Frankly, I find what these two are advocating to be very troubling. I have linked the video below. Thank you.

You say the magistrate should never interfere with the goings on of the church.
If that's the case then how could the church be countenanced and maintained by the civil magistrates? I wonder if you reject that part of the WLC 191?
What I see in the Christian Nationalist movement is weak and pluralistic. what is much better is upholding the original teaching of the standards on the civil magistrate.
Westminster Confession of Faith chapter 23.
III. The civil magistrate may not assume to himself the administration of the Word and sacraments; or the power of the keys of the kingdom of heaven:a yet he hath authority, and it is his duty, to take order, that unity and peace be preserved in the Church, that the truth of God be kept pure and entire; that all blasphemies and heresies be suppressed; all corruptions and abuses in worship and discipline prevented or reformed; and all the ordinances of God duly settled, administered, and observed.b For the better effecting whereof, he hath power to call synods, to be present at them, and to provide that whatsoever is transacted in them be according to the mind of God.c
With your comments on theonomy and the papers made by NAPARC denominations it seems that these modern professedly reformed types reject the understanding of historic reformed theology. They claim that theonomy is not in accord with the confession but that cannot be correct when you have Westminster divines saying things like the following.
Wholesome Severity reconciled with Christian Liberty By George Gillespie
    4. If God would have the Moral law transmitted from the Jewish people to the Christian people; then he would also have the Judicial law transmitted from the Jewish Magistrate to the Christian Magistrate: There being the same reason of immutability in the punishments, which is in the offences; Idolatry and Adultery displeaseth God now as much as then; and Theft displeaseth God now no more than before.

I'm always listening to these discussions with a grain of salt but it was also great to hear your perspectives on this as someone that I would assume (please correct me if I'm wrong) as being more of a "conservative" Christian. I hate trying to overuse the terms progressive/conservative with religion as it can easily become political, but I have been led to believe over time that many "conservative" Christians are likely to also be "Christian Nationalists" as it is defined by more "progressive" Christians. Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Thank you Matthew for the heads up. It’s good to be prepared for an answer when called that term. I think if anyone calls me that, I will ask them what they mean by that term, and then go from there. I liked the contrast you gave of nationalist from globalist and intersectionalist(I think I will call that term divisionist). Interesting contrast that the left is very globalist minded and very divisive at the same time. It is strange for liberals to have patriotism. I remember when Michelle Obama said as a new First Lady that she was for the first time proud of our country.
    Notes from video:
Christian Nationalist: prays for our civil leaders, votes our conscience and our Bible, rebukes our civil leaders, civil leaders should stay out of controlling churches, obedient to civil law, rooting out ideological evil(crt, etc), no shame in pride in nation and religious belief, but not good to have national flag in the sanctuary or have a candidate speak in church, but good to pray for them,
Edit: just saw the term “White Christian Nationalism” on a CNn video. That really seems to divide and disparage even more by bringing attention to skin color.

Generally, when people use the term "Christian Nationalist", they mean people who want to fuse a particular variety of Evangelical Christianity with a level of nationalism that might even rise to jingoism. Often we hear of people who want to replace the Constitution with the Law of Moses, and who talk about "Conquering the Seven Mountains" (a particular turn of phrase in this group). Many of them are Pentecostal/Charismatic and believe many things that other Christians would recoil in horror at. These people believe in a version of God who supposedly controls American politics, but is somehow defeated by 80 million voters. They believe in a God who pettily sends natural disasters against people he doesn't like, but is somehow powerless to stop the same natural disasters from hitting his people. They believe that mankind is RESTRAINING GOD FROM DOING HIS WILL. Their version of God is small, petty and impotent.

Christianity transcends the political and cultural philosophies of this world. Although some worldly philosophies may have shared values with biblical truth, these philosophies are not the equivalent of biblical truth and if these philosophies are espoused with biblical truth, the biblical truth is perverted and rendered ineffective. Further, Christ's Kingdom is not of this world and we are first citizens of Christ's Kingdom and look forward to perfection of that Kingdom upon the return of Christ. However, until the return of Christ, even though we are not of this world, we are in the world and are called to be law abiding citizens in the world. This world consists of citizens who are believers in Christ and non- believers in Christ and the civil governments of this world have been ordained by God to maintain law and order until the perfection of Christ's Kingdom and believers are to respect the ordained leaders of these civil government in order to further the Kingdom of Christ's Kingdom. Christ is at work in the civil governments of this world to accomplish His purposes, and even works through the sinful practices of wicked civil governments to further His Kingdom. Pilate being the classic example. He was a pagan corrupt man who crucified Christ. A conscientious moral magistrate would not have Christ crucified, and in fact would of released Christ due to a lack of evidence. God however placed Pilate in power to crucify Christ so that our sins may be atoned for. In seeking first after Christ's Kingdom we must always prayerfully seek God's will and acknowledge His will over our own will, and have faith in God's will for what we have no control over, and be found faithful carrying out God's for what we do have control over.

@10:36 you are talking about a nations flag in the building of the congregational service, particularly on the platform, and how you disagree. Indicating it is (or maybe could become) therefore on object of worship.
First, thank you for your thoughts. As a curiosity, what about recognizing that the nation in question, like all nations, is under political authority of the one King, Christ. (Matthew 28:18-20) and seeing as one of the explicit rolls of the church is to disciple the ethos ( nations- including geopolitical authorities) to obey ALL that Christ commands, the flag, as representative of the nation, should be in the room, sure not on the podium, to hear and submit to the Preaching of Christ from the minister of Christ, for the Glory of Christ. That isn’t to say the nation is under the authority of the church, but that it is a neighboring authority subject into Christ. And as the minister of the Word of God, preaching to the Ethos in their entirety, the nation needs to listen to the preaching of Christ and submit to it. Not to the person preaching, but to the Word Preached.
Therefore the flag (fill in your nation here) absolutely should be in the congregation, to be subject into the Preaching of the Word for the glory of God.
    Thx. God Bless.

I understand exactly what you are saying about the first and second version, but thst you are happy with the 3rd definition is slightly worrying. Sure, its nothing wrong with the two words in combination, and there is nothing wrong with being both a Christian and a Nationalist (as in your own defenition) BUT (and this is a big but), the 'value' of the word Christian is not graded because you put Nationalist after it. I don't think you do, but there are a risk of you fellow countrymen (and women) think that being an American is somehow making them a better Christian, and that is a dangerious conetation. However, being a Christian might make you a better American perhaps, and that is great and ofcourse OK. Again, there is nothing wrong with being a Nationalist (wanting the best for your country) but God does NOT value you more because you are an American. ...so a Christian Nationalist from Belgium or Argentina are 'in the same pot' as you. Its just that their national feelings are towards Belgium or Argentina. By calling yourself a Christian Nationalist, you put yourself at risk to me misunderstood by us, your own people (Christians) while you make life easier for the 1st 'version' you spoke about. Any left leaning person or media outlet would have a field day with you,, calling you every bad word under the sun. However, you can avoid all this by calling yourself: ' A Christian and an American Nationalist'. Then noone can accuse you of mixing the two. I know... this is semantics in extreem, but why feed the liberal elite or even get missunderstood by other Christians, when you don't have to.

I agree with everything you said in your video, but nowadays, when most people think of nationalism, they think that it is patriotism to the detriment of others. So rather than having to add a caveat every time we use the word nationalism, we should separate ourselves from that word entirely and just use the word patriot.

Some of these statements may be a bit controversial here.
    1. I'd argue that Catholics - so long as they don't consider the Bible sufficient in all matters of faith, doctrine and practice, and so long as they pray to what is not God (regardless of how they justify it and regardless of what they call it) - should not be considered Christian, and need to be converted like anyone else.
    2. I'd also argue that the US flag shouldn't be on church grounds at all. The church, to me, is effectively an "embassy" to the Kingdom of God. But as you said - if it *is* in the church, at least keep it out of the sanctuary.
    3. I have the American Patriot's Bible. It's terrible, and Christians need to see how bad it is. (I found out about it from an atheist's channel.)
    4. I actually consider the Pledge of Allegiance idolatrous. A Christian's allegiance belongs to God, and with 100% of their allegiance belonging to God, there's no room for pledging allegiance to a nation or a piece of cloth.
    5. So far as Christian nationalism goes - I feel that people who try to fuse the church and state are misguided. This is not the same as using one's faith as a model by which to vote, either as a citizen, or as a member of the legislature. One influencing the other is one thing; one controlling the other is another; the two fusing into a monolith is bound to corrupt both.

In regard to #5: Christian Nationalism isn't trying to fuse the church and state any more than it is trying to fuse the church and family or the state and family. They are separate spheres. CN only wishes to see the state recognize and obey the sovereign authority of Christ because He has all authority in heaven and on earth.
The state will ALWAYS enforce morality. It isn't whether or not it will enforce morality but WHICH morality it will enforce. Right now it is enforcing a godless morality. CN says it should be a biblical morality. It's been done before and was successful (see the founding of our country).

@@claytonkliewer8343 Very few of our actual founders (as opposed to settlers) were actually Christians though. The ones who believed in a god at all mostly believed in one of the "set it and forget it" type rather than specifically Jehovah. To say we are a Christian nation (in the sense that our population is majority-Christian) is fair, but many people equivocate and say that we are a Christian nation (one that was founded by and for Christianity), which is patently false.
I'm fine with religion informing the state, but when one particular denomination believes they have a God-given right to control the state, - you know, when this happens, other _Christians_ will suffer. And I don't mean "Catholic" and "Orthodox" (which are misnomers; Evangelical Protestants are the true catholic and orthodox believers) either. I mean Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians will suffer because the loons that want to run the state for Jesus don't consider such people to be Christians and think everyone who doesn't believe in their _Pentecostal-Charismatic_ variety of Christianity should be, at best, a second-class citizen.

The Puritans of New England were as Protestant as you can get and Christian Nationalist as ever in the history of the modern era. They definitely had no qualms about using civil authority for Christian public norms for the good of society. Yet today Christians scoff at this while complaining about the rise of LGBT and transing kids and grooming children.
The next best thing was England under the Church of England when it was very evangelical, reformed, and more Protestant. Because of England and it’s CofE, God used them as a means for Protestant Christianity to be spread throughout the globe. And their country was very blessed for a long time which is temporal, but still a blessing nonetheless.

Well America was founded on the idea of separation of church and state, while the first amendment doesn’t explicitly state that it implies it since the first amendment grants you the right to your beliefs. If you want freedom of speech separation of church and state must exist because without it their is no freedom of speech.

Rev. Everhard says that a nationalist is someone who “wants their county to thrive”. IF you stick with that definition, then of course there isn’t much wrong with being a Christian who also wants his country to thrive, i.e. a Christian nationalist. The problem is, this definition is on the wrong side of both history and the dictionary in that custom definition of that word. The dictionary definition for nationalist is “a person who strongly identifies with their own nation and vigorously supports its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.” And that is also the way historians use it. The term “nationalism” was first applied by social observers and historians for what was happening especially in some of the powerful European countries in the 19th century. Napoleon, Metternich (from Austria), and Bismarck (Germany) were all defined as nationalists - and they had expansionist agendas. So be prepared for some negative reactions if you go around telling people “I am a Christian nationalist.” If you really mean “I am a Christian who wants America to thrive”, say that instead - it is much less likely to be misunderstood.

      The wrong side of history…interesting.
The New England Puritans were as Christian Nationalist as you can get. They had no qualms with civil authority holding society to good standards (God determines good) for the good of society.
Great Britain also had a very good strong Christian Nationalism in their consciousness regarding their country. God used them to spread the gospel throughout the globe; and God blessed their nation too.

I find nothing in the teachings of Christ that align with even a good or Pastor Matt's third definition of nationalism - none. I'm sure you could take a comment or small point of Christ's and misuse it as such - just as white Christians defended their use of slaves for centuries. Again, I find nothing in the teachings of Christ that suggest we should be nationalists. Jesus was an immigrant growing up, he refused to bow to any quasi religious-political power structure, and he was eventually crucified by religious zealots who put legalism ahead of love - and defended their actions in their own concoction of a religious law.

Jesus came to save our souls. That was his purpose. While saving us from our sins, He didn’t simultaneously dispute the rest of his Scriptures.
I don’t understand your Jesus was an immigrant comment. He was Jewish and grew up In Judea. Hiding out from a wicked ruler for a few years in Egypt is not immigration.

"White Nationalist" or "Nationalist" are terms that are already associated with hard right white supremacist in America, "Christian Nationalist" would be nothing but someone leaving the "White" part of the term off to make "Nationalist" more palatable to those that aren't ready to associate with "White Nationalist" but believe they can identify with "Christian Nationalist".
