You ever notice that the same people who complain about Mastodon’s more prog-rock direction are the same people who praise Opeth’s..I don’t get it. This album is awesome!
Funny you say that because I actually hated In Cauda Venenum but I enjoy this era of Mastodon. The latest Opeth, Gojira, Dream Theater were really disappointing for me but Mastodon came through with the goods IMO.
Necrotic Nick- I love this album but I honestly love Opeth's In Cauda Venenum too. I think that's the best of their prog era so far. I think this Mastodon album really delivers on a lot of fronts. Easily the best they've done since Crack the Skye.
@@thrallsofmetal agreed. Maybe ppl should think why bands go prog when getting old and learn how to appreciate it. Its very enriching...and boy I like heavy anyway
In cauda venenum was a grower for me. Top five opeth album for me today. The new gojira was a bit boring. I liked Magma much better. Mastodons prog era is my Favourite as well.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I'm the same way. Even my least favorite Mastodon album would still be one I liked. I love hearing their evolution over time as well. They expanded their sound so much and that keeps them interesting and keeps me coming back.
For me, the new Mastodon album "Hushed and Grimm" is a pure musical masterpiece from all angles, execution of instruments, singing, melody, rhythm and lyrics. The very top of the current album is the purest emotions that all the band members expressed in this album. For me, progressively, Mastodon grew and grew from album to album, reaching an explosion in the most inviting sense on this album. We can only imagine their future steps to what limits they will reach. The production of this album is a special story and in my opinion the purest so far, counting all their previous albums. All the songs on the album are a special musical experience in themselves, especially if we delve into the messages and emotions that come from each song. Pay special attention to the songs '' Sickle and Peace '', '' More Than I Could Chew '', ''Teardrinker'' , ''Pushing the Tides'' and final ''HAD IT ALL''. But, special story represents the song ''Pain with an Anchor'' - the lyrics on the last one is amazing for me.
Necrotic Nick- Right there with you. It's just a hell of a showcase of what they do so well over the course of their career. I think they had kinda plateaued a bit since Crack the Skye but granted they did plateau on a really solid sound so I really don't have many complaints. This just feels so from the heart that it just pours out of the music for me. Killer album across the board.
Last night in Mesa AZ I was lucky enough to catch this tour. If you are a fan of this band and especially this album, drop whatever you are doing and go see this tour. This band is on fire and playing the hell out of these songs live. I wish I could follow them around for the remaining dates.
After watching NUMEROUS reviews of this album on RUclips, you guys are one of a few that actually get the album. Most people are absolutely shitting on it after just one or two listens 😆 You'll never fully process a 90 minute concept album after a couple of listens. This album is an absolute TRIUMPH for Mastodon. Easily their finest work since Crack the Skye. They've managed to bring a bit of everything from their back catalogue and a TON of new sounds. The writing is incredible, the musicianship is up their with their finest work, their vocals are on a different level than anything they've done before and finally, Brent's solo's are some of the most structured and complimentary I've ever heard him play. I've had it playing constantly since it's release and I can't tire of it because of all the different song styles and sounds in this album. It's like a mixtape of classic bands, modern bands and bands of different genre but performed by one amazing band
Necrotic Nick- I really don't see any of the negatives that people have brought up with this one. I think it's one of their best in years and the them really connects the songs very well. It really captures the whole "stages of grief" aspect well with how the album is paced and this album has stellar songwriting across the board. I think everyone stepped up on this one.
@@thrallsofmetal They haven't given it a chance 🤷♂️ This album I'd like a bottle of fine wine, you've have to let it breathe for a while first before you can truly appreciate it. Anyway, keep up the good work guys. It's good to see some people on here that actually know what they're talking about 🤘
Feels like the brought back some of the crazy "shreddy" sections and integrated it into their new more accessible sound. They had proggy sections on their new era of albums but they were always very minimalist. I expected them to continue in the direction of Emperor of Sand/OMAtS so Hushed and Grim was a very pleasant surprise. Love the album, listened to it all day!
Necrotic Nick- I really didn't have tremendous expectations for this and it legit blew me away. This is some of their best songwriting in years. They really did do a solid job blending the old with the new here and they haven't been this proggy since Crack the Skye. I'm hooked on this one. Been jamming it most of the day.
It's just unbelievable how creative these guys are. Emotional... Yes, it is, and I don't understand why a lot of people are talking about it as if it's the problem. It's a mind-blowing, heart-filling, highly creative, and well-executed prog album with style.
Necrotic Nick- Personally, I love it when you can hear a band bear their soul essentially and go for connecting/ relating to the listener on an emotional level. They captured pretty much the emotional gamut of processing the loss of a loved one and they built some killer songs around it. I haven't heard them this creative in awhile.
Oh man I was so pumped to see you guys were as blown away by this as I had hoped. The album is incredible. Even the way all the songs are sequenced feels perfect. You go through this long tug of war with grief in atmospheric spaces and then Gigantium just feels like a giant cathartic release, letting you push forward with some hope and peace. This album has some of their heaviest moments in years, best vocals, best lyrics, best drum fills and guitar solos, and just has so much sonic depth. I totally agree it's their best since Crack The Skye in just about every facet of their song writing and abilities. Could've maybe used one or two more barn burners, but that is a meaningless nitpick. Cheers.
Necrotic Nick- For me this is one of the most immersive listens I've had this year. It really connects with me on so many levels and the pacing, as you put, is remarkable. I wouldn't have minded a couple more barnburners but this was pretty damn amazing even without them.
Loved this review! I just picked this up from the record store and I’m only 5 tracks in and so far I am also blown away.. maybe 1 in every 5 albums I end up loving will give me that kind of excitement on first listen. Can’t wait to get through the rest of it but I have no doubt it’s every bit deserving of the 5 stars! Helllllll yes Mastodon
Been... intimidated by this one. I wanna be in the right headspace to give this a proper first listen. Emperor of Sand grew on me so much, and it took some real focused listening to realize how damn good it was.
Necrotic Nick- It took me longer to absorb Emperor of Sand and Once More 'Round the Sun than this one. This one had an immediate impact. It just clicked right away for me. This is worth a real deep dive for sure.
This album hit me a lot harder emotionally than I was ready for. Can definitely relate to a lot of the lyrical content. By far my favorite album of theirs since CTS.
Necrotic Nick- Dude, same. They really dug deep and you can feel the emotion put into these songs. Some of this really hit me in the feels as well so it's not just you, bro.
I LOVE how melancholic this album is. Every album of theirs brings something different to the table and you can really see their growth as people rather than musicians with each one. They do their own thing, and the purists hate that. And anyone who makes the purists piss themselves in rage has my backing.
Thanks for the heads up and excellent review. I too got into Mastodon after the release of the Remission (2003) album and have enjoyed their progressive-metal directional path ever since their beginning. I saw these guys live 5-times, and they have been killer every performance. I am looking forward to this album's release. Salute!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Same here. I snagged Remission when I heard March of the Fire Ants on a Relapse Comp forever ago. They've evolved so much over their years but they've still know how to deliver the goods. Cheers, man!
Necrotic Nick- I've had to put it down for moment just because I've jammed it so much and I don't want to burn myself out on it. It's simply amazing from start to finish and I just connect with it on a lot of different levels.
Man, I had high expectations...and it still blew me away!! I haven't really been able to listen to anything else since, it's some of their best work...a mature masterwork. I absolutely dig it and it may be my fave album of the year! I expected it to be good, but not this damn good
I put this album right there with Leviathan and Crack The Skye. It's so good, nearly perfect in my book. I've got all their albums on wax and I absolutely love and appreciate the maturity and evolution of this band
Im only on my 2nd listen so far but im kinda feeling this could be scaled down to an hour and id love the whole thing. But still a lot of time to still grow on me more than i could chew and gigantium are my highlights they always end albums well
Necrotic Nick- Oddly enough, I really don't have a problem with the album length which is generally something I complain about in double albums. I got really locked in on the songs on this one and it didn't make the whole album seem as long. I'm at about 5 or 6 entire run throughs of this album so far and it's still draws me in just as much as the first time if not more.
I haven't listened since Blood Mountain, really enjoyed their first two. think I need to check this out though due to the rare 5 star rating. Add another to the insane want list of October.
Necrotic Nick- While I love their first three albums I think Crack the Skye became a giant benchmark for the band and really showed off what they were capable of. This album really gives me that feeling again. I strongly recommend checking this one out.
Nick Mason was the drummer in Floyd lol ! Think Shred mean Richard Wright … regardless, the new Mastodon is quite badass and I wasn’t expecting that tbh. Lots of dark melodic heaviness and some killer melodic singing and harmonies. Too early to pick fave songs yet though for me!
Necrotic Nick- This is quite an engaging, well thought out album. I'm still diving into this one. I'm going to need a long roadtrip to really get the full effect.
I was blown away by this one too. Skeleton of Splendor especially especially hit me in the feels, resonated with me due to a bad breakup I just went through. Anyways, album of the year contender, totally agree.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, outside of the music the thing that really brings me back to it is the connection with all the emotion that went into this. The whole theme of processing grief really connected with me since it's something we can all relate to in some way.
Emperor of Sand is actually my favorite Mastodon album but what I'm hearing of this one has me excited for a new top spot contender. Waiting for my CD to come in.
Necrotic Nick- Crack the Skye is pretty much they're benchmark for me when it comes down to their proggier side and this is so damn close to that. I loved Emperor of Sand but for me this is better than that as well as Once More 'Round the Sun and The Hunter.
Necrotic Nick- I think this is the closest they've got to Crack the Skye since that album dropped. My expectations were moderate at best for this one. I live what they've done but I haven't latched on to an newer album of theirs like this in years.
Necrotic Nick- I haven't felt this strongly about a Mastodon album in years. Fucking amazing album. I haven't jammed Mortal Vision so I'm going to have to check that one out at some point.
On my 5th spin of this album and its really grown on me. Stick some decent headphones on and you can really here the atmosphere and the songs become even more diverse upon repeated listens. Brann's vocals are amazing ! He elevates these songs and gives them added melody! It's a little too long for me but I think there's an excellent 10 track record in here.
Necrotic Nick- I'm on about my 4th so far and I'm getting the same effect. There's a real connection to this album that I feel with every listen both musically and emotionally. I think in terms of harmonizing vocals this is some of Brann and Troy's finest work so far. Honestly, I still really love every track and despite it being long it doesn't feel that long to me since I'm always looking forward to the next track.
Pretty late for this one but i was very impressed with this album, find alot of there past albums take a few spins too really enjoy them as a whole post anything after crack the sky of course, but this album just flows and got some great guitar work very atmospheric in alot of songs which i find suits this band alot.Great album, great review.
Necrotic Nick- Never too late to check them out. They've put out a lot of vastly different albums over their career. Maybe this is the one that connects with you.
I've been listening to Hushed and Grim for a few days now and it's really grown on me. It's powerful and complex, full of darkness and beauty. It's a great release. I feel it's even stronger than EoS. Also, have you guys reviewed Colors II by BtBaM? That album kicked some serious ass. Edit: Nevermind. I found it and it was a great review.
Necrotic Nick- A bit more Brent on vocals would have been cool. I think Bill stopped doing vocals when they dropped most of the harsher vocals unfortunately.
Great Review... and i agree on everything. Just finished the second listen. This is a masterpiece hands down. I was a bit afraid that this could be as disapointing as gojiras last output, but man... this is how its done. Had this pink floyd moments too... First on the beast and Skeleton of splendor. The vocal hooks the riffing... still hyped, guess this will be my album of the year and makes torn arteries number two though i hate to say this after one day... but man, it is just a perfect double punch (take this Steve harris😲🤣)
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I still really enjoy Fortitude but Mastodon really upped the ante and just blew away my expectations on this one. This album is longer than the last Iron Maiden but doesn't drag like that one did and Troy and Brann kill it on the vocal hooks on this one. Brent seemed a bit quiet on this one but the leads rip.
@@thrallsofmetal i still dont get fortitude, though i really wanted to love it Had it on Pre order.. and cancelled it just in time.. gave it some chances, but it just doesnt click with me. Sometimes its just like that. But this one, man i really had worries.. double album... high expectations.. pre order... everything Set for a led down😉 But its just getting better with every listen right now. What a Relief. Album 2021! In Front of carcass darkthrone asphyx and cryptosis for me... only mr bungle would be able to change that as they did last year🤣 But i guess there will be another Show from you guys when its time... so lets see.. keep up xour great work, greetings to All of you👍
Wow I'm excited to hear this now! From Remission up to Crack The Skye, they were absolutely my favourite modern metal band, but the releases since, whilst still good, just didn't have the same impact on me. I look forward to listening to it later, based on your review its an absolute doozy, but some other reviews are a bit lukewarm, so it's obviously a divisive release which intrgues me!
That’s pretty much how I feel about their Discography. I love everything up until Crack The Skye (my favorite album of theirs) and I dug everything Else they did after. But It don’t give me that same impact as those previous albums did
Necrotic Nick- This really brought me back to when I first jammed Crack the Sky and that album just immediately catching my ear as something fresh and interesting from the band. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews from 10 out 10's to like 5 out of 10's so it's definitely divided a lot of people.
i am currently on track 6 disc 2 on my first listen. i prefer disc 2 so far and the drumming especially on savage lands and gobblers of dregs is excellent or either i am just easily pleased. anyway i love the album so far
After just one listen, the whole thing seems to meander at places, but some of the songs I already really like. Time will tell if it will grow on me. Probably won't beat Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye but hey, new Mastodon is always welcome!
I picked this one up today along with the new Cradle Of Filth album. It's going to take multiple listens for it to fully sink in. Have you heard The Silver album that dropped last week? It features members of Horrendous and Cryptic Sermon.
Necrotic Nick- It's worth the multiple spins. I remember hearing about The Silver but I never followed up it unfortunately so I may have to check it out. I love both Horrendous and Crypt Sermon so I'm already intrigued.
Im listening to left hand path by entombed now for the first time now !! BEST DETAH MMETAL OF ALL TIME ARE GORGUTS - EROSION OF SANITY - DEATH SPIRTUAL HEALING - PESTILENCE -SPHERES OR CONSUMING IMPULSE - CYNIC FOCUS - MALEVOLENT CREATION - RETRIBUTION HANDS DOWN
Necrotic Nick- It's a masterpiece of an album. If you love that HM2 guitar tone that's pretty much were it all starts. Those are some killer albums on that list, bro!
I think this might be my favorite since Blood Mountain. This one, and BM, are the only 2 that hit me instantly. I love the others. But it took more time.
Necrotic Nick- Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye hit me immediately and I got the same vibe here as well. The dark, brooding feel of this album and how emotional it is really connected with me too.
Dude, I just ordered a Converge All We Love We Leave Behind shirt, and I see you wearing your Converge shirt. Cool, Awesome, Fantastic. You should review the new Archspire album. I love Mastodon to. There's always haters and fans of every band. I've seen bad reviews for this new Mastodon album, and Whitechapel album so.. I'm interested to know what you think, and your thoughts during this review video. I'll be working tomorrow 11-3pm so I will not be able to watch this video until it's after work!
Necrotic Nick- Nice, man! I found this one in a record store years ago. Killer find. Sorry, been catching up on old comments but Jon and Miller covered Archspire so let me know what you think of the review.
@@thrallsofmetal I've heard the first single from the new Mastodon! Also, we just heard that Limp Bizkit is releasing a new album on Sunday, entitled "Limp Bizkit Still Sucks", which is based on the INFAMOUS onstage rant from Zakk Wylde that occurred back in 2002.
100% agree. It was infuriating to see Pitchfork’s 5/10 score and a couple other bad reviews I saw. This thing is a goddamn masterpiece, can’t wait to receive the vinyl.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I can see it not being someone's thing but musically it's fucking amazing. I can't get my head around the negativity honestly. All I hear is a brilliant album. To each their own though.
I love both opeth and mastadon. Opeth alot more though. When opeth came on before mastadon I was super pissed off because I thought opeth should be the last band on the stage. But holy fuck, Mastadon's live set from this tour was fucking insane. The new material shined live. I never thought I'd say that someone outplayed opeth on the same stage on the same night, but holy fuck they did it. I've seen mastadon twice before and they were good before, but this setlist and their sound was incredible. Megalodon was still the best song of the night. It sucked that Opeth parted with Axe right before the tour began. Would have liked to have seen that setlist that was voted on by the fans instead of what we got. The Drapery Falls was worth the price of admission though.
Necrotic Nick- I'd actually just love to do a giant retro review of White Zombies albums in general in the future. We're pretty much all big fans of La Sexorcisto and Astrocreep 2000.
@@thrallsofmetal the fact we're on the same page makes me ecstatic! I hope you guys do that! They deserve the hype and love! Thanks Nick you made my day🤘🤘
So far I still prefer EOS but this new record will take some time to be fully appreciated. Mastodon cannot do a bad album and it's really nice to see they try new things... but the vocals on this one I don't know, seems like Brann is the lead singer now and while he doesn't have a bad voice, I'd rather hear Troy and Brent as the main singers and Brann adding some clean vocals in the background.
Necrotic Nick- From what I gather Brent was splitting his time between this album and his project with Matt Pike so he wasn't as present on this one outside of the leads and a few songs. I think the album is pretty evenly split between Troy and Brann this time which I really don't have a problem with since I like both of their styles and they harmonize really well together.
Hehe is that a plain or a train passing? Daaamn lmao love Mastodon till death. Gobblers and eyes of serpents f.e. are gonna fkin huuuge live! And man...the solos! I m not a solo guy but these are dirty af
Necrotic Nick- I'm pretty sure it was a plane. lol. Dude, this album blew me away. I've been jamming the hell out if it especially More Than I Could Chew, Dagger and Skeleton of Splendor. Brent owns on the leadwork. I think it's some of his best honestly.
Had the chance to listen to this album on the 29th but chose not to. Listened to it now and it has a lot of absolute gems (MORE THAN I COULD CHEW) , but there's some really mello, almost alt-rock songs that don't go anywhere and drag on a bit too much. I do love though how fkn great the closures of most songs are and they really make you excited to listen to the next song, so the record doesn't really drag on, even though it's long. 4/5 for me \m/ Might be their best since Crack the Skye!
Necrotic Nick- Dude, that is flat out one of my new favorite jams as well. Scythe and Peace is another one I really loved. I thought pretty much every song was engaging but not in the same way and I agree, it flowed really well. I was anticipating this album being a lot of bloat but it's paced so well it really doesn't feel as long as it actually is. For me, this is their best since Crack the Skye and that album still amazes me.
Dude, I just found out that Limp Bizkit is releasing a new album called "Still Sucks" on Halloween of all things. Talk about random but hilariously awesome! Sometimes its refreshing to see a band that is just having fun and not taking themselves seriously. Ah, the warm feeling of high school nostalgia. You guys should totally review it and just have fun.
Necrotic Nick- Understandable. I got into them on Remission and I liked how their sound kept evolving over time. I like hearing prog approached different ways and they've definitely carved out their own niche with their sound.
This record is shooting up my AOTY faster than a Beezos Cock Rocket. I wish the fans still living off of Leviathan or CTS would come to terms with never gettibg those records again and enjoy the other places they've gone. It seems like wasted energy, either jump off the train or stay for the ride.
Necrotic Nick- Same here, man! I still love the old stuff but I like that they keep pushing their band forward musically and haven't lost really any of the hallmarks of their sound. It's still heavy as hell in spots but there's so much more to their sound now.
I tried to get into Mastodon but they came on after Goatwhore and Obituary. They were too slow for this old American Indian. This was at Psycho Las Vegas 2021.
I was there buddy , Obituary sounded like never before not even here in FL they sounded so good like in Psycho. Mastodón am not a fan but they killed it there
@@METALALEX211 I had a great time overall at Psycho Las Vegas. My feet were tired from so much walking, and last night Goatwhore in Seattle and 5 October was BLS, Obituary, Prong. 🤘
I am an older gay man. Just being honest, what i would like you to get out of this Mike, I was around in the 70s rock scene. Sabbath, Zeppelin etc I saw them all… back then even, I wanted to get a taste of Ozzy’s @ss… lol If im being honest I still do.. look, im not trying to brag but I was part of that group of rockers that paved the way. Yes I am a sports fan more or less, I enjoy your insight. Thankyou..Thankyou for what you do… -Thomas
Necrotic Nick- I didn't get that impression at all honestly. I got more of that vibe from albums like The Hunter and Once More 'Round the Sun honestly. I didn't think they were bad but they really didn't grab me like this one did. This is a double album I can actually jam and not get bored. It's pretty much the exact opposite of the new Iron Maiden for me.
I loved the first 4 Mastodon albums and I thought Emperor of Sand was a nice return to form, but this new album is a huge disappointment for me. I understand the subject matter has affected the music, but 10 mainstream, rather slow "rock/prog" songs? It's just too much and I got bored quickly. If there were just 3 or 4 of these and the rest of the album was the more prog metal I love from Mastodon, that would be fine. Maybe they will get back to a more metal album next time, but it looks like they are going down the Opeth road. I really like what Troy did with Killer Be Killed on "Reluctant Hero" though. That was a great album.
Necrotic Nick- I think this still has plenty of heaviness on here and way heavier than anything Opeth has done in their prog era which while I like, could use a bit of the beefier tones on this album. With every track I was drawn in even more. This is a nice balanced album for me. Great heavier songs, softer ones and nice uptempo rockers. I dig the hell out of it.
Ok, this album is okay at best. I love the guys in the band and get it, yet this one is so mellow and lacking in heaviness. Brann’s cleans are great, yet way too often and where’s the heavy riffs? I do enjoy the opener and Pushing, pretty fucking awesome. I’m sorry, but old Mastodon before CTS is their best. I cannot be alone on this one? 5 out of 5 are you fucking serious? What is happening?
Necrotic Nick- I'm sure there are plenty of people that disagree but it's entirely subjective. I really dig this album. Front to back it delivers killer, well written songs and I think this is their strongest effort in years. I'm a huge fan of their first 2 (Blood Mountain is good but a bit uneven) but Crack the Skye became a benchmark for me. They haven't really sniffed that one since until this album. I think there's plenty of heft here (more than the last 3 arguably) but they're not going to go fully back to their old sound at this point I think.
I must be hearing another album. 5 stars , really? Sorry guys but i can't share your enthousiasm. 3/5 maximum , just for the sake of their great previous albums.
I dont think i have ever been more disappointed in an album before. Sad to see such a great band moving more and more away from what made them great in the first place and now the deliver THIS. This is not Mastodon anymore.
Necrotic Nick- Really? Did they stop being Mastodon here or on another release because this is probably heavier than the last 2 to be honest. I think this is on par with Crack the Skye. I get being a fan of certain eras but this still sounds a lot like Mastodon to me.
@@thrallsofmetal I could not disagree any more. This is very different then anything they have done before and i would barely call it metal anymore. My favourite era is up until blood mountain but i have alwas enjoyed every release in some way. But this is just weak and i think they should stay in metal were they are geniuses because imo they dont handle the rock genre too good. This is just a typical example of a band getting commercial, kind of like what gojira is doing just worse.
@@BBQcheese Yes Gojira was a major disappointment too but at least that album had SOMETHING about it. Im just happy Meshuggah never changes as that would break my heart😂 its sad to see both Mastodon and Gojira wasting their godlike gifts to please the masses instead of creating masterpieces.

I am pleased to see a positive review, and a review from gentlemen I can trust. Thank you guys.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
@@thrallsofmetal No problem Sir.
Im going to start listening to more of Mastodon's music
Necrotic Nick- I strongly support this endeavor!
I give a 4/5 to Hushed and Grim. It's very emotional, melodic and deep. An album full of grief and I love it.
Necrotic Nick- The dark and somber mood on this album is perfect. You can feel the pain/ confusion/ sadness/ all of it in every song.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! With every track I jammed I was more engrossed in this album. This album is fucking amazing.
Ahh a good ways to kick off my Saturday morning, now time to listen to the cd,thanks for the review.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks for watching, bro!
Been... intimidated by this one.
I like your reviews man, this was a great return from Mastodon
Chingon!!!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We appreciate that, bro!
I've been listening Hushed & Grim evey day since it came out. I just love it. So proud of this dudes, such an amazing discography.
Necrotic Nick- I've had to put it down for moment just because I've jammed it so much and I don't want to burn myself out on it. It's simply amazing from start to finish and I just connect with it on a lot of different levels.
Looking forward to this one. It took me so long to get into Mastodon but it finally clicked. Great band.
Necrotic Nick- I've been a fan since Remission. Something about this band hooked me right away and keeps me coming back
5th listen in and still discovering new stuff.. Incredible 👌🔥
Necrotic Nick- I'm at around 2 1/2. I'm trying to spend more time in the car so I can jam it all. I need a long roadtrip for this one though. lol
Can't effing wait to hear this album...and review, super excited for this'un 🤘
Necrotic Nick- I hope you dug it as much as we did.
Man, I had high expectations...and it still blew me away!! I haven't really been able to listen to anything else since, it's some of their best work...a mature masterwork. I absolutely dig it and it may be my fave album of the year! I expected it to be good, but not this damn good
People might think I'm crazy but this IS my favourite Mastodon album, I also loved the last EP, really enjoyed this review
Necrotic Nick- That's a tough one for me. They've made so many damn good album and this one just complicates that for me since it's so damn good.
Cold Dark Place was an excellent EP
I put this album right there with Leviathan and Crack The Skye. It's so good, nearly perfect in my book. I've got all their albums on wax and I absolutely love and appreciate the maturity and evolution of this band
Necrotic Nick- It's up there with all the elite albums in their discography for me as well. I'm having a hard time not listening to it right now. lol
This album was fucking amazing, I love it
Necrotic Nick- Totally agree, man!
@@thrallsofmetal and sometimes that’s an album really needs. Not technicality, just pure emotion
the beast reminds me of joseph merrick they have done that sound before
Necrotic Nick- A little bit. I liked the more country/ blues feel of The Beast.
Hmmm, very generous review - hope I like it at least a little cause last few albums were a struggle to get through
Necrotic Nick- I think this is the closest they've got to Crack the Skye since that album dropped. My expectations were moderate at best for this one. I live what they've done but I haven't latched on to an newer album of theirs like this in years.
Another gem from Mastodon, I’m loving this drop! I’ve been jamming the new release from Mortal Vision today as well, and that one is a banger too.
Being from ATL I was never that impressed by Mastedon but damn, is this double album full of surprises. And the last song is so fucking beautiful.
Necrotic Nick- Never too late to check them out. They've put out a lot of vastly different albums over their career. Maybe this is the one that connects with you.
@@thrallsofmetal I own several of their CDs. I played a couple of them today and it feels like it's the production that kinda turned me off.
I agree! Fantastic album :)
Necrotic Nick- Hell yeah, man!
TOM are the real deal! Loved this review guys keep up the great work!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We appreciate all the love, bro!
Really good album, I definitely wanted more Brent on vocals though.
It would be nice if Bill sang too!!!
Necrotic Nick- A bit more Brent on vocals would have been cool. I think Bill stopped doing vocals when they dropped most of the harsher vocals unfortunately.
Easily my favorite band
Necrotic Nick- Too many bands to name in terms of favorites but I'm always down for new Mastodon.
@@thrallsofmetal i still dont get fortitude, though i really wanted to love it
Had it on Pre order.. and cancelled it just in time.. gave it some chances, but it just doesnt click with me. Sometimes its just like that.
But this one, man i really had worries.. double album... high expectations.. pre order... everything Set for a led down😉
But its just getting better with every listen right now. What a Relief.
Album 2021! In Front of carcass darkthrone asphyx and cryptosis for me... only mr bungle would be able to change that as they did last year🤣
But i guess there will be another Show from you guys when its time... so lets see.. keep up xour great work, greetings to All of you👍
Wow I'm excited to hear this now!
Today is big man! Mastodon, Thulcandra, Archspire… let’s go!!!
Necrotic Nick- We'll be covering most of those. I'll probably save some for future collection updates as well.
After just one listen, the whole thing seems to meander at places, but some of the songs I already really like. Time will tell if it will grow on me. Probably won't beat Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye but hey, new Mastodon is always welcome!
Necrotic Nick- It is a quite a huge record to absorb but I really just dove headfirst into it and found something amazing.
This album may grew on me over time.
Necrotic Nick- I've been hooked and I keep discovering new stuff I like about it. I'd stay keep coming back to it but that's just me.
I'm like 2004 behind on this band. Maybe I'll check it out just based on double 5 stars.
Necrotic Nick- It's worth a listen for sure. Hell, I think most albums are worth checking out just to see if it's your thing or not.
On my way to pick it up, after my grueling day at work!
Necrotic Nick- I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, bro!
Any plans to review Allegaeon's new album when it comes out in February?
Necrotic Nick- More than likely. We're pretty big fans of the band. Have you listened to any of the released tracks from this album?
@@thrallsofmetal I've heard the first single from the new Mastodon! Also, we just heard that Limp Bizkit is releasing a new album on Sunday, entitled "Limp Bizkit Still Sucks", which is based on the INFAMOUS onstage rant from Zakk Wylde that occurred back in 2002.
Necrotic Nick- What did you think of that single?
@@thrallsofmetal It was good.
100% agree. It was infuriating to see Pitchfork’s 5/10 score and a couple other bad reviews I saw. This thing is a goddamn masterpiece, can’t wait to receive the vinyl.
I was gonna lay into them for that. But? They’re entitled to their shitty opinion too.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I can see it not being someone's thing but musically it's fucking amazing. I can't get my head around the negativity honestly. All I hear is a brilliant album. To each their own though.
Fantastic album I agree best since Crack the Skye
Necrotic Nick- By the end of the first disc I was already thinking that. Second disc confirmed it.
Bill Kelliher is riff legend, still trying to absorb this album
It’s a lot
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. I should have brought that up because he's such a killer writer in the band.
Best album since Crack the Sky
Necrotic Nick- Totally agree, bro!
Yo thralls! You guys should do a old review of la sexorcisto I feel like it's still criminally underrated masterpiece ( with Rin:) )
4/5 for me \m/
Might be their best since Crack the Skye!
I will spend my money on this double album and NOT on Senjutsu.
Necrotic Nick- I mean... I bought both. lol
No.
Oho, now THAT’S a Halloween treat and a half.
Fuck I’m getting old….
Necrotic Nick- Gonna have to pass.
OMG 5 STARS HOLY HELL WHO ARE YOU GUYS

holy shit they got a Fucking Phil Collins! lmfao
Necrotic Nick- I mean... kinda, right? lol
@@thrallsofmetal lol Gonna need an album ranking!
I never got Mastodon, but then for me Prog in Stoner/Doom/Sludge Metal has never appealed.
Necrotic Nick- Understandable. I got into them on Remission and I liked how their sound kept evolving over time. I like hearing prog approached different ways and they've definitely carved out their own niche with their sound.
It's an acquired taste.

Necrotic Nick- As long as you found something. That makes it worthwhile.
As a Mastodon fan, I just don't get this album and the ridiculously positive reviews??
This a nice return after the boring emperor of sand album
Necrotic Nick- I liked Emperor of Sand but this is way better.
@@thrallsofmetal well emperor of sand did have it moments
I am an older gay man. Just being honest, what i would like you to get out of this Mike, I was around in the 70s rock scene. Sabbath, Zeppelin etc I saw them all… back then even, I wanted to get a taste of Ozzy’s @ss… lol
If im being honest I still do.. look, im not trying to brag but I was part of that group of rockers that paved the way. Yes I am a sports fan more or less, I enjoy your insight. Thankyou..Thankyou for what you do… -Thomas
From what I've heard it sounds kinda forced, they phoned it in. Need to concentrate on quality not quantity 4 out of 10
Necrotic Nick- I didn't get that impression at all honestly.
Reviews aren’t the same without jammin jon 😒
Necrotic Nick- I think Shred and I do pretty well together.
Give me old Mastodon more slug the better
That would be nice, but looks like those days are over, unfortunately.
Necrotic Nick- I like both ears honestly.
The band and the album sucks but appreciate the review, nonetheless!
Necrotic Nick- Strong disagree but thank you anyway!
I must be hearing another album.
5 stars , really?
Sorry guys but i can't share your enthousiasm.
3/5 maximum , just for the sake of their great previous albums.
Necrotic Nick- It may not connect with everyone but it definitely connected with us. I think this is better than the last 3 by a longshot.
Im just happy Meshuggah never changes as that would break my heart😂 its sad to see both Mastodon and Gojira wasting their godlike gifts to please the masses instead of creating masterpieces.
gettiing a lot of negative reviews ive noticed online
Necrotic Nick- I saw a lot of positive ones as well so this might be a bit divisive with people.
Far more positive than negative but it's not going to be for everyone ! It has actually improved massively for me after repeated listens.
@@chirpywiggins5796 oh yeah they always do after multiple listens
