    Hi Dr. Lani. A few months ago it occurred to me that jumping in place should help my bones. I did it for a couple of days...then I noticed a flashing in my right eye and a lot of floaters. The eye doc diagnosed me with a vitreous detachment! He asked if I had picked up anything heavy, etc. and I told him the only thing I did differently was JUMP for exercise. He said that could've caused it! So I advise anyone to be careful not to jump too vigorously.

    I'm 68 and started jumping about a year ago. Since my early 40's I have had so many issues with lower back pain. I never seemed to get ontop of it, and did lots of back exercises and yoga. I have to say once I started jumping, first thing I noticed was no more back pain. I could not believe it. After 25 some years of so much pain and not being able to do that much, it's like I have a new back. lol. I can sit for hours now and still no issues and do much more than I was able to before. So if it's fixing my spine, imagine how it's strengthening my bones. My scan score was -3 a year and half ago. I will go for another at the 2 year mark. 😊

    Better to jump once, wait 20 seconds, then your bones are surprised. They lay down more cells. Better not to start on a concrete. A second floor is recommended. I do jump on concrete but I don't have osteoporosis, and I have been doing it for years. I started on floors. I also use weights.

      Hey barefoot! So you jump once every 20 secs? I think I'd go crazy waiting 20 secs inbetween. What's a second floor?

    Dr. Simpson. Is it safe to jump like that if one has osteoporosis in their lumbar spine? Thank you!

    @gentleradical Thank you for your post! Meds also can predispose one to this condition as well as being older. Your post just reminds all of us to start slowly, especially if we are not used to strenuous activities. Also, read more about vitreous detachment on the WrongDiagnosis site.

    Dr. Simpson, do recommend the power plate? I do squat pumps, for 60 seconds at a time. Doesn't sound like much, but yes, it burned at first. Also, "HARD" walking? Instead of a casual walk, I stomp sort of as I walk, shop, etc. I don't care what others think, I care about not breaking a bone We will talk soon once I get whatever I can get from by Dexa.

    What bone density exercises can you recommend for someone who cannot jump, run or skip due to having knee problems?

    I can only do 25 at a time, rest, do more. Is that ok?

    And jumping is good for Osteoporosis?

    • @DoctorLani
      @DoctorLani  Год назад +1

      Yes, for some. Bones respond to impact in a positive way. That said, if someone is high risk for fractures and have fractured before, with minimal trauma, jumping is not advised. Note that I stared with coming up on the toes and when jumping note my feet/toes are always in contact with the ground. If, in doubt, don’t do the exercise, as with any exercise. Not all people diagnosed with osteoporosis are at high fracture risk. Bone quality is as important as bone density, meaning bones that are resilient can handle more impact. I was diagnosed with OP in my mid40’s. No fractures fortunately and that is likely due to a good bone quality- Trabecular Bone Score. Bone is complex and there is no, one-size-fits-all ❤

      -4.5 is a high fracture risk. So, you hopefully, I now have been diagnosed properly regarding why your bone density is so low. And, hopefully you were prescribed an anabolic unless it was contraindicated a -4.5 is more than 50% less bone density than a 30 year old woman.

    ...you could also just skip a rope. Same small jump motion

      Yes, good idea, however, I do think that the heel impact is more helpful - do both 😉
