This news took my breath away. 2 years ago, at the advice of my doctors (2) I agreed to take the drug due to serious bone loss. My reaction to the drug was so profound...I not only decided to NOT take a second injection, no matter who advised me to do so. My reaction amounted to 6 months of hellish reactions....which did not subside until after the 6 months were up. I refused any more Prolia After carefully thinking about another drug which had been advised but since the insert, which contained all the pros and cons, decided not take that one either due to a past stroke. GLAD I did not take that one either. .Both drugs are manufactured by Amgen BTW... Good to see the FDA making its decision..

Exactly what did you do? What did you take instead, I am in this predicament now. I have researched all the Osteoporosis drugs and all of them are terrible. I will not get another injection however I don’t want the rebound Osteoporosis. Can someone please advise me. Blessings

Why does the video suddenly stop? Have no benefits been found to Prolia? Are there no us3 cases? What do you offer people with severe Osteoporoses and perhaps other exercise limiting conditions?

    • @DrSusanBrown
      @DrSusanBrown  8 дней назад

The video is designed to provide an educational perspective on osteoporosis treatments, including Prolia. While Prolia may reduce fracture risk in specific cases, it’s important to note that the medication carries a black box warning for potential severe side effects, such as increased fracture risk after discontinuation and serious infections. We encourage everyone to carefully weigh the risks and benefits of any treatment with their healthcare provider.
At Better Bones, we focus on holistic approaches to bone health that align with our philosophy of building and maintaining strong bones naturally. For individuals with severe osteoporosis or exercise-limiting conditions, we offer the Better Bones Program, which includes an alkaline diet, professional-grade supplements, and safe, low-impact exercises. Tools like our weighted vests can also help improve bone density gently and effectively.

They can only suggest not make you take it. You need to stand your ground on what and why you may be asked to try a drug they suggest. I am 71.5 years old and a 13 year survivor of stage 4 ovarian cancer. I guard my health very closely. I have watched many friends and neighbors die at the hand of big pharma. I take nothing but a occasional aleve, but only when its absolutely necessary. *I also never received the "one" that cause many to die a premature death.

Stand your ground. These drugs are the wrong approach and don't allow NEW bone growth. My mother paid a huge price for being on one that starts with F... By the time, she came off it, so much damage had been done. Much smarter and more natural ways to achieve good bone health.

Depending upon how old you are make sure you use your entire foot/feet using your toes when walking. Watch how older people like President Biden shuffles when walking. He isn’t using his toes. There are videos for toe strength using towels and gripping the towel with our toes. This message may help somebody.

Good on you. I wasn’t told of the rebound effect. Only had one hairline fracture in my whole 70 years and doc put me on it. Now 76, I find going off it will cause me to be in a much worse state than before. Honestly, I feel I have destroyed my body, getting stressed, depressed (want to go to sleep and forget it all) and although I want no more of it, I am afraid of the alleged multiple fractures and breakages “they” say will eventuate.

And yet - as Dr. Brown - describes there is no Black Box warning for the drug's unique and inevitable Rebound Effect, which occurs when the drug is discontinued without a treatment of an alternative antiresorptive (which treatment needs to be monitored by bone marker testing). Doesn't sound so bad? Wrong. Often the "alternative" isn't available - the patient has GERD, or has developed medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, or insurance won't pay for it, or the patient has kidney disease - and the bone marker testing is ROUTINELY unavailable. Again, doesn't sound so bad? Wrong again. If you DON'T treat the Rebound Effect with the alternative antiresorptive, then your bone turnover (resorption) accelerates, causing bone loss to past baseline, AND there is a significant increase in multiple spontaneous vertebral fractures. I myself have five of those from discontinuing without the rebound being treated - neither my doctor nor I knew anything about the Rebound Effect or the necessity of treating it. Perhaps if there was ANOTHER Black Box Warning for the Rebound Effect, we would all know what we were getting into when the doctor insists that if we don't take it, we'll "break a hip and die." Which is a crock, but a frequent threat from all too many doctors. Black box that Rebound Effect so we can make informed decisions respecting treatment!

Doctors know very little on treating OP. They push drugs & calcium supplements without knowing the effects of most of the bad calcium supplements the average person will take. And seriously...what does insurance want to pay for? If the health industry wants to do anything, why don't they team up with the insurance companies to pay for physical strength programs designed to build bone & offer things that work without all of these nasty drugs & their side effects. There are things that work to build & strengthen bone & many can't afford those things. It's far easier to take a pill or injection at the advice of a poorly informed doctor. Frustrating to say the least.

Well….a specialist (not generalist) *ought* to be keeping up with all the literature and be aware of issues, esp. big ones as the study results become available. Not when FDA finally puts a warning, black box or otherwise, on the PI.

I don’t care if I lose my left foot I’m not taking pills I will deal with the pain the way my body is supposed to deal with it there’s no reason to take any of these drugs. I am 63 years old and I don’t even take Advil or Tylenol for forget it I’m not doing it not ever and I’ll probably live longer than 99% of the old people on this planet because I don’t take pills any of them and I don’t go to doctors. I have seen what meds to those around me and refuse. I'm 68 and have problems exercising because of the pain it causes now. I need to lose 20 lbs but find it almost impossible even though I eat very healthy. Stick to your guns! I am healthier than most people I know my age that pop pills! I've seen so many people go downhill taking meds and I think I'd rather not be here than go that route! I feel it was my mistake for taking that Prolia shot. I trusted the doctor. After losing my sister last year, I have almost given up on them.

Bone density and fragility are two different things. My niece used to a specialist in pharmaceuticals for bone loss and she told me not to go on any. I have never broken a bone, and may never do so.
She basically said you can have good bone density and fragile bones. Then she told me to eat calcium, K2(MK7) and Taurine. D3 but I can’t because it screws with my blood calcium and PTH. I take a pharmaceutical call Calcitriol. It took my PTH from the 900’s down to normal. My blood calcium which was 14 down to normal.
She is the pharma statistics person that analyzes the long term studies and puts the warning labels on a lot of drugs.

Just got off the phone with my dad. He’d been taking Pr**ia for 18 months for osteoporosis -he got his 3rd and final dose in Dec 2023. Then, he started to have issues with his jaw-sharp protrusions pushing into his cheek.
He just got home from dental surgery today because his lower jawbone is disintegrating-literally rotting away. The oral surgeon removed inch-long pieces of jawbone that had broken off.
My dad did research on Pr**ia before taking it but did not find anything about this particular side effect. Once he told the surgeon what he was taking, the doc said “yeah, Pr**ia can do that”.
He is at risk of losing his lower jaw but should be okay if this stuff gets out of his system. His GP and oral surgeon told him to stay off the drug. His nephrologist told him to go back on it as soon as he recovered from surgery.
My dad does have severe osteoporosis and is very fragile. But what good is a drug, really, if it causes you to lose your lower jaw, or any other bones for that matter?

I'm the same age. Had a bone density test done and have osteoporosis. I'm in Ontario Canada. This drug is priced at 482 dollars but mine is covered. I have the first injection 💉 in the fridge but haven't gone for it. Now reading all this issues, it's scaring me too. I took Fosamax for 4 years 2 decades ago. It turned my hair orange from blonde, caused stomach cramps. I'm torn as what to do. I have had several accidents where I broke or fractured bones even in my 30s. I don't do well with most drugs.

If she was not relayed off of it with an alternative antiresorptive, Prolia's dangerous "Rebound Effect" might have been responsible for the fracture. Or it could have been a side effect of Prolia (atypical femur fractures are a Prolia side effect.)

Thank you Dr Susan for all informations. I've listen to your video concerning taking Prolia but my question is do I have a choice??? I had breast cancer at 72 years and now I have to take tamoxifen. My oncologist is concern about my osteoporosis and started me on Prolia because my score is -2.7 in hip-neck. Spine is ok with -1.9. I'm doing exercise for osteoporosis mostly squats every two days and do treadmill or walk and taking vitamine D and calcium. I'm seeing my oncologist in a month. I don't like to argue with a specialist but I'm concern about the effects of prolia after 3 years. What do you suggest?

I took it for a year or so and then quit. As far as I know, I have not suffered any increased problems. You have to wonder why it got approval in the first place now that all these problems have come out. I generally am leery of any drug studies that rely on small study of groups of people so small in numbers as I see reported here. I don't recall seeing that in the materials I read before agreeing to take the drug.

Did a doctor help you get off of Prolia? Or did you stop it on your own? I'm looking for doctors (US-based in particular) who have successfully gotten patients off of Prolia. (Not for me personally, but for people who want to get off of it.) Thx!

I have been using Prolia for a number of years after being started of on Actonel infusions. I fracture a wrist in 1997 and fractured my femur in 2017. I have bi-lat TKR that both were done in 2000. My Surgeon told me my bones were twice my age. I stopped my Prolia shots in Oct 2023 as I had two broken teeth that need attention. I am still waiting and the University Dental School I use, the Supervisor has upgraded my needing all teeth removing and being replaced by dentures, full upper and partial lower plates, retaining my middle bottom 4 to 6 teeth, 1 to 3 on both sides. I was a Cat 2, meaning I should be seen within 90 days by our Facialmaxilary Service at the Hospital. I was put on the Public waiting list but it's been over five months with still no appointment.
My next Prolia injection should be next month. I really don't wish to go back on Prolia, I will be 71 July 4th. What would you suggest I do instead of staying with Prolia. I live in Australia and my Dr looks like she's waiting until by broken teeth are attended to. She doesn't know yet that my dental plain has changed drastically. I live in Regional Australia so I would truly appreciate any advice.

So it took them about 15 years to acknowledge the problems associated with it if you have kidney disease or rather to reveal it. There are others I read possibly like reduced immunity, UTIs and more like the bone jaw breakdown. Now my friend understands why her doctor wanted her teeth checked. It scared her suspiciously so she said no to Prolia. As studies are mostly done by the manufacturer themselves, they always write statistics in a way that promotes their products. How many more years before more “adverse events of interest” can be outed. Originally they said it had none. As you can see, I am one who regrets ever being put on it for only one hairline fracture in my foot, in my life of 70 years at that time.
