Wife of a 35 year UPS employee. They train their drivers to back into parking spaces or pull through because backing into a fixed space is preferable to backing out into traffic. It's all about reducing risk.

^^THIS^^ I have an older car, without a backup camera. So many people walk behind my car despite my hitting the horn twice to get people's attention, (they used to teach it in driver's ed) and they don't even hesitate to see what's going on, this includes folks with small kids in tow. IDK if they are distracted or think it's all my responsibility (peds and drivers share responsibility) but people are just checked out.

It’s generally easier to back a truck in! The rear wheels are a fixed pivot point and they can “cut the corner” more sharply than the front end, so you don’t have to worry as much about swinging around. It’s also a lot safer for other people the parking lot; where we sit in relation to the length of the vehicle means that, no matter how slowly and carefully you back out of a spot, there are blind spots and the likelihood of backing into something is increased. Improved visibility protects me and other drivers. ❤

As a professional Truck Driver, my husband will sometimes back in to spots because it’s actually safer for when you go to exit your parking spot. Looking forward rather than having to look back, which is unnatural especially in a high traffic area. A lot of professional drivers are TRAINED to back into a parking place first. It’s a SAFETY aspect they teach.

I had to chuckle on your parking space comment. I live in FL and I also have seen so many parking backwards into the parking space lately. I think it is because so many have relocated here from the North. I have been told that if they need a battery jump during a freeze it is easier to access.

  • @routerryu
    @routerryu 3 месяца назад +26

I rarely comment, but you hit a nerve! As someone who drives a full-size pick up truck, I can assure you it is absolutely safer for us to back in. When you arrive at a parking lot, you can visually see who is around you and safely back into a spot. When you leave a spot, it is far safer to be able to pull out than it is to back out as there are large blind spots in the extended cabs and the height alone makes it challenging to see a child who may run behind you. Also, I do live in a cold climate, and it's far more difficult to get a jump on your battery if you are pulled into a spot. It's also easier to push through a snowbank that may have been plowed in front of you when exiting a spot. Please believe me when I say, it's not about being "cool", it's safe & smart!

I'm not opposed to backing into a parking space at all. It's much easier to pull forward to get out. What irks me is people that back in crooked and are over the line of the next parking space. It also irks me when people have to make several attempts to back in basically stopping traffic. I had the day off for July 4th. I was invited to a cookout but opted to relax at home. Happy Saturday, Dr Dray! Fun vlog. Hope you have a blessed evening. 💙

I always back in to a spot because I have a very small convertible, live in the South with the monster trucks and it is safer when pulling out to be able to see what is coming around the

Next year try the city of Stafford 4th of July events. There’s an orchestra concert (indoors), then you stay for the fireworks. Since it’s a smaller city, getting out of the parking lot is OK. The downtown events are nuts. Katy Mills gets really crowded too. Also, I was eating strawberry pretzel salad while watching your video - so good.

😂 We back up our cars! Sometimes it's easier 😊 I worked in the morning. Off by noon!😅 Salads where I'm from include lettuce and other greens, Southern California we have a fair amount of vegetarians and vegans so plant based foods are popular as well as gluten free. We have a large middle Eastern population so veggies are a must here!

I see all the pros of backing a truck in, for me, I cannot back in between 2 cars. Easier to pull in and back out, where I don't feel at risk of hitting anyone. And in smaller parking lots you can really cause delays if you are backing in and don't nail it first try. I've seen some parking lots ban the practice, usually smaller ones.

The battery jumpstarts are awesome. Bought one for my son last Christmas - sat in his trunk for 6 months. Had a friend's car die in our driveway - that thing started it up immediately - so much easier than using another car. It's really annoying if someone wants to back in and is making a bunch of people wait on them to do their special maneuver.

I pull through if at all possible. Will back in when necessary. What I HATE doing is backing OUT of the parking space as you would normally have to do if you just pulled in. It's risky. People don't pay attention. It's easy to miss seeing a little kid and this is made worse when the kid isn't holding an adult's hand.
My newer car has a back up camera. Total game changer.

My husband has a large truck, and he always backs in. He's a pro at it, and he can do it faster than most can pull into a space. Also, we have noticed in our area that the small car owners can never park straight. They often park over the line. It's the individual not the manner of parking.

I drove a truck for 30 years and yes, it's easier to back in and back out, especially if you have a long bed. Swinging the back end into a space is much easier than swinging in the front end. On the rare occasion that I did pull straight in, I always regretted it because it took me forever to back out. I felt so sorry if there was a person waiting for me to back out and get my space because I was always extra careful not to side swipe the cars in the next space on each side of me or behind my space. They just don't make parking spaces long or wide enough for trucks and not enough space between rows of parking spaces. It's much safer too. So hard to see when backing out of a space.

I back into spots about 50% of the time, depending on the parking situation. I have been hit by a car who didn't see me in a parking lot and now I don't take chances. I think it's definitely safer, especially when you're in a big truck that has limited visibility . I even back into the spots in my parking garage because I think it's easier to pull out.

I'm a full sized SUV driver and I always, without fail back in. I'm in control of the situation when the cars around me are parked. The chances of small children running behind my vehicle as I back into a space are much lower when I'm parking next to empty cars. We do it for our safety and everyone else's. Backing out into traffic is less safe than backing in to a space in a controlled environment. I see you're in a small car and I agree for small vehicle drivers it's not as necessary. Try it though and you'll see the difference in your comfort level over time. Faster to navigate out as well.

The only time I really took a bath rather than shower was after some surgery where I had to soak in some epsom salt water. I love my planner. Pull in like normal to parking spot. Its usually the younger generation doing this.. the big trucks usually back in bc the hitch hangs out, BUT that also can make the car parked behind it in danger of the hitch hitting it. But alot of the younger ones think its “ cool” to back in. Soo silly. I totally agree w you Dr. Dray

It's quite annoying especially when you have to wait for them to back up, pull forward, back up, pull forward, etc. I've never had a problem pulling in the regular way; as to "safety," many vehicles comes with rear cameras and sensors making that less and less of a reason as time goes on

I agree that July seems too early to put out school supplies (what a bummer reminder for kids trying to enjoy their summer LOL), but in some places classes start back up in August (mid-August in my city). For families with several children and especially if they're on a tight budget, it gives the parents time to buy all the needed supplies a little at a time, I think, so the sooner they begin, the better.
I've lived in a part of the country that gets triple-digit temperatures from late spring to around early fall all my life, and while you have to learn to live with it, there's really no getting acclimated--meaning, you're going to want and need the AC 24/7. And once you get to my age and are dealing with hot flashes--forget it! 😂😂 Walking from my car to inside stores or buildings, taking out the trash and bringing the bin back in after it's been picked up--those are examples of times I'll be outdoors in the heat. Otherwise, no. 😂
The backing up into parking spaces--I think everyone's done a good job of explaining why some choose to do so (although, in the situation you explained, with the parking lot being empty, I'll agree it didn't make much sense). Also, some lots are small and the parking spots are just very tight; I can think of several doctors' offices around town, for example, where pulling out in the "normal" way (in reverse) makes it very difficult.

  • @cnunesoregon

Yes, it's easier to back into tight spaces because you have your cameras. Sometimes I cannot pull into a space because I can't judge where my right front fender is. Especially if a car is lower than mine on the right side. Since everyone now has cameras, it's much better.

I usually back into a space, especially when driving a large car. The turning radius is better, and it's easier to leave when you're done. Also it's safer if you're approached by someone with bad intent, and you need to leave quickly. I grew up in Alaska, large trucks and safety as a woman in a military city are huge factors in my preference to back in. No one not even Dr. Dray can dissuade me 😆

My ideal parking lot choice is driving strait into a spot & through so I'm facing out the next aisle so I can drive forward when I leave. HOWEVER for my car, a smallish hatchback, I feel way safer backing out when in a busy full lot because I have motion sensors and "backup TV" so I don't worry when there are giant vehicles totally blocking my side views. Backing into a spot can be problematic if the car behind you pulled up too close so you can't get to the trunk
