I kinda think half the problem comes from always wanting amps to sound like something else, rather than just leaning into using what you have in front of you.

I love these little MGs. And as someone who used to buy a whole bunch of peaveys (both the bandits and the little rages), I really see the value of these. I've been also considering this issue of what to get someone who is newer to the guitar that introduces them to Clean/Dirty, EQ, and some basic FX. If I was working with a higher budget, I think I'd give a beginner some studio monitors and a Strymon Iridium, simply because I feel that it's more home appropriate and also if guitar doesn't stick - they still wind up with a killer sound system to listen to music. But the MGs are really great to pick up cheap used and it provides somewhat of a response to products like the Positive Grid Spark that are aggressively marketed to beginners as being drastically better than and therefore invalidating cheaper practice amps like the MG. As you've demonstrated here, the sounds are really decent.

From 1994-97, I tried playing music with someone who had an earlier Marshall MG combo about the same size as this one during the summer of’94 (he also had a guitar built by Marshall, essentially their stab at a cheap Strat). I was not a guitar player yet, so I couldn’t tell you about its features. It probably predated this model’s features by at least 8 years (and may not even have had a hi-gain switch). I only know that he played it loud enough to aggravate his mother who forced him to part with both amp and guitar. The following year, he got a different guitar/amp rig.
At 14:58, what you played was like a combination of “Your Love” by The Outfield with the Air Supply version of “(Making Love) Out of Nothing At All”. That’s no mean feat.

I've owned the mg30fx for roughly 5 months now. Sounds great especially when ran through an mxr AB switch running total of 3 amps switchable on mxr Ab. Awesome sound, until the mx-30 went into just a straight up un- controllable loud hum...... Little research and found the problem to be the TDA 2050 Ic chip screwed to the heat sink went bad. No rookie repair! Chip can blow up just from static electricity from a persons touch. So turn amp down before turning on, I also recommend turning it off when you're changing accessories or changing guitars on your input. A standby switch to the main amp would be a great improvement for safety I sure got my bottom lip out when my new amp went down but it's fixed now. If that happens to you get quality old stock on your chip.....$4 ones will work but you get what you pay for. There's a guy in England Stuart who is doing the same repair on RUclips so it is out there documented how to repair. Keep rocking in The Free world and have these new guitar players treat it with care.

I own the 50 watt version as a home practice rig, sat in on a gig that required a Marshall sound. Was going to rent a head but last minute I decided to bring it instead and wow, turned up loud on stage and through the house I was shocked at the performance. So was the band. Will I use it again, hell ya, it just loves pedals and plays with them very nicely. 50 watts is plenty loud for a fairly large bar especially mic’d up, it’s just a good amp, not a tube amp at all but it’s its own thing.

From Leo: They are just ok. I worked on a lot of them, the circuit board build quality is marginal. The little 15 fx is a good practice amp. The MG 30 and 50 have so much hiss on the gain modes that I don't know how anyone can enjoy them, not to mention the harsh gain tones.

I really like the MG series. You plug in and get some cool tones easy. The clean channel is good and the amp takes pedals well. I can get good drive tones easy and usually faster than with my Katana

I actually like that it's not device based. Im not into these new amps that you control from an ap - I played a Fender GTX100 at a gig once, and while it got good tones, one gig my phone had a hard time connecting, which kind of threw the whole thing and made me nervous.

An MG15 with FX is good. You get 2 channels with built in effects, a line in so you can play with a track, and room for an upgraded 10" speaker if you want to mod it. No need to pack up and travel with a rats nest of cables for all your pedals and lines to a computer system when you can just pick up a box and bring it to a friends house to jam. And it doesn't sound that bad with a 10" greenback. A creamback might be better.

I owned a MG15CFX, and while I agree with your comments on it, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I was never able to get pleasant sounds out of it. Now, is it better than the Harmony clean solid state 5W amp I had as a teenager? Yes. But is it worth the price they're asking for it given other options? Not to me it isn't. Still, I'm just one person and I don't like to poo poo other people's gear choices or decide what they do with their money, so I concede the amp does have its place, and you certainly made it sound good.

I was never a fan of the MG, but I think that was mainly due to the OE speaker. I was also never a fan of the peavey bandit series with the OE speakers ( sheffield and scorpion ). However, drop in a creamback in the MG or a swamp thang in the peavey.... whole new world that sounds fantastic. Cheap amps are super cheap mainly from the dirt cheap speaker used. The preamp values usually aren't too far off from their tube counterparts. In the case of the 80s and 90s peaveys - they literally used vi tage marshall preamp values, but the controls were different - they effected the frequencies different and resulted in a more present tine. Take out all of the 4558P op amps and put in 4558D for a smoother drive tone. I have been playing a teal stripe bandit 112 with an attenuator for about 6 months now. I recapped it and changed the op amps and put in a swamp thang...sounds fantastic. I haven't flipped the switch on my Hiwatt the entire time.
That said....all the tube purists love tubes so much.....they put 45 solid state preamps in front of them......

That doesn't surprise me about speakers. I've found speakers make one of the biggest possible differences in amp tone, not just for quality but also for character.

It isn’t that they’re bad little amps, it’s that in the same price range you can get stuff 100% better from Fender, Orange, etc…

    • @Da_Publick
      @Da_Publick 3 месяца назад +3

What's better by either Fender or Orange, really? Fender put out a 20 watt amp that has the same exact voicing, just with different gain and volume levels, set up in presets named after classic Fender amps. Meanwhile, it doesn't give you the ability to switch between voicings and effects quickly, even with a footswitch. Orange put out a 20 watt amp that, at the most, has a digital reverb, and a tuner. Of course, they're not misleading people like Fender is. But I don't think their amp is better than the Marshall. I think it's even, where I prefer the Orange's crunch sound, but the Marshall's versatility.

Really impressive tones/recording you got out of this thing! I started guitar with a Marshall MG50 years back and always thought it was alright despite all the hate for them.
I've tried a few of the later versions over the years and again thought they sounded fine ; the issue is they are just built like s*** and have a silly noise floor to them where they hiss more and more as you turn them up.
Marshall really need to re-invigorate the MG line (or offer a new range of affordable solid-state/hybrid combos) as they have been sitting on their assess for too long without any innovation compared to the competition - I say this as someone who loved Marshall amplifiers growing up and what the company used to mean for me.
    Great video!
    -Gabe

Only weakness on this amp is the High Gain channel. It sucks. But the others are great actually. So for high gain i just run a pedal. But you still get the effects.

  • @darwinsaye

I have no bias against solid state amps - I have an early 90s Fender that has been a home workhorse for years, and a I’ve even gigged with it a lot. With Marshall solid states, the problem for me is the same as what all the Marshall amp in a box pedals suffer from. They can deliver something akin to the Marshall crunch or high gain tones, but when you turn the gain down, they have zero Marshall character anymore. I’m someone who really only likes the Marshall edge of breakup/ low gain tones, and these just can’t deliver that.

Is this a plexi or a JCM 800? No. However, a lot of 'beginner gear' is looked down upon by guitar players because when they started playing using cheap guitars and amps, they were not good players so they remember that gear sounding bad. As people can see from the demo video though, a good guitar player can sound good with cheap gear.
