    Adam is one of the few reviewers left with some integrity left. Thanks Adam! I still got the release. It’s probably the best looking it’s ever been in disc but I’m extremely disappointed that they removed all the filmic grain. If Kino Lorber puts it out again in 2 years, yes I will double dip again.

    Thanks for not pulling any punches on the transfer. I'm getting weary of the youtubers who are acting as apologists for the studios' poor workmanship.

    It's probably my all-time #1 western cinema. The acting, the actors, the scenery & music are unmatched.

    Removal of film grain is by far the most common complaint I hear from cinefiles, its crazy that the studios continue to insist upon it.

    Thanks Adam. That’s disappointing. I’m glad it’s an upgrade over my 13 year old Blu-ray. It’s on the way.

    This really hurts Adam. It's so wrong to put a 3 hr movie on 66gb. It's a slap in the face to fans of film. Just a cash grab from the studio.

    Paramount have always treated this classic film badly! They originally cut the film to pieces for its cinema release and it took over 10 years to see a complete version in English.
    Footnote :- I have an Italian DVD that has a running time for about another 5 or 6 minutes longer than the recent release.

    Tisk tisk. I can't believe we couldn't get a nearly 3 hour classic movie on a bd100.

    Watched it last night, agree with the B grade. Is the video quality as good as it could have been? No. Is it *bad*? Also, clearly, no.

    This IS the greatest movie of all time. I have seen it over a hundred times. Of course I have to by the 4K version even though I've seen the grain complaint in other YT reviews. I'm very curious about the grain issue. Is it real, or tech snobbery? This coming from an old bstrd who loves tech, but not for its own sake.

    Holy shit! This and Planes, Trains and Automobiles are the only two 4K films I bought blind because I love the films.
    That's it - fuck pre-orders or trying to help physical by "sending a message". Will now wait for review before buying. If this film gets another remaster with the better coding, this is getting beyond shitty.

    Adam thanks for the info, the great review and explanation I have been a fan of the movie ever since I accidentally stumbled upon in a late winter night in 1993 on AMC. I was hoping there might be an extra scene in the supplements where Harmonica gets beaten up by the sheriff. But it sounds like that is not there and probably does not exist anymore.
    Here is a question for you or for anyone who really knows this movie well. I have always thought that the original (at least American) movie poster was super cool but that it was not balanced. Morton ( the railroad magnet) should also be on the same side as Frank with Jill in the middle and then Harmonica and Cheyenne on other side of Jill. Morton is a big part of the movie and it seems there would be space there to place him with Frank. In fact, it has always felt to me that he was probably there originally and was airbrushed out by an American distributor. The tag lines about one man to...etc. are not really faithful to the movie either and I thought they were probably placed there by American move reps. Does anybody know if there is an Italian or any other country that had s picture of Morton standing alongside Frank (Henry Fonda) in any other country?
    Just a question that I've always had. I think Morton is important and a great character. It would make this movie poster legendary. I know the actor who plays Morton was quite popular in Italy so mabye they kept him in on the poster there?

    Hi sir, Thank you very much, for your review,on this epic masterpiece. I have a question, the movie holder, you sat "once upon a time in the west" on, how can you get a hold on that ? where can you buy it ? I think it`s a cool way to start a movie, with this item.

    Just watched this last night. I get that some might prefer a little bit of the grain on a classic western, but I’m not in that camp. I was amazed that a movie hitting its 55th anniversary could look so good in 4K. Blown away. By contrast, Gins of Navarone 4k had more grain than I preferred, but its atmos track was epic!

    Some of the issues brought up are worth mentioning, but we thoroughly enjoyed the 4K, which is a big improvement over the drab, barely watchable Blu-Ray. Watched the film in its entirety and found it worth the upgrade.

    These are marmite; Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic, True Lies. I was watching Aliens the other day and I thought it looked mostly stunning. I do prefer filmic with grain, Spartacus, Lawrence of Arabia, Ten Commandments, but I have no issue with these. Times may be changing.

    • @saintsalieri
      @saintsalieri 3 месяца назад +5

      I recently watched Aliens and the Abyss and while I was watching them I did not once think about anything but the films, what they mean, their aesthetic qualities. After the fact, I wondered if maybe they were dulled in their impact due to the cleaner look. I'm not really sure, I've only seen these movies on DVD before. I watched Alien before Aliens, and usually that is a well-reviewed disc. Both movies look great, the best I've ever seen them. Aliens is still the better movie, a "lack of grain" did not change that. I think the issue is overblown.
      Staying with Cameron, T2 is usually considered a disaster disc. I haven't watched it. In screencaps I've seen online it can look bad (on my laptop). There is some waxiness, which is in True Lies also, but also terrible color grading which I think is a much more serious issue.
      I guess I'd like to see a restored film print running alongside a 4k disc and do direct comparisons with different discs and so on, but I would much rather understand that 4k discs preserve a lot of information that has meaning and that meaning is why we watch films. I'm not watching them for grain, which has become a bit of a fetish that is hard to understand.

      I watched Aliens on 4K the other day too, it looks fine. There's still film grain, just not in most of the close up face shots. The Abyss looked great too, even better than Aliens (IMO). I also own the 2015 T2 blu-ray as well as the 4K disk, and honestly 9 out of 10 (normal people) would say that the 4K looks better than the blu-ray.

    I had this on my Top #1 must pre-order asap however no longer. Looks like let down so I re watched my re-mastered old DVD 📀 version and yes the DVD looks great on my OLED....it got GriT which Westerns need. The colors in the 4k look kinda over saturated . CGI is destroying peoples eyes, they need everything look PoP like animated cartoon. It looks colored in Hard to tell cause I don't own it and I'm not impressed.

    • @agpablo2885
      @agpablo2885 3 месяца назад +4

      I agree with you that based on the pictures shown in this review, the colors indeed look over-saturated and artificial. I have NO idea why that is, because I can assure you that the colors of the actual 4K disc as displayed on my LG OLED 65" screen DO NOT look anything like what this reviewer's pictures indicate in this video. They looked very life-like and natural, and the color toning of the 4K is vastly superior to that of the 11 year old (?) bluray, not to mention the ancient DVD, which I also used to own once upon a time in my home. Too much is made of the film grain issue in my opinion. Yes, there is less grain visible on the 4K without looking waxy (and I prefer it this way), but a fine layer of grain is still there and the picture quality is mostly stunning in my opinon. Perhaps the first 20 minutes or so seemed a tiny bit weaker, but once Jill makes it to the outpost smack in the middle of Monument Valley, the picture quality kicks up a notch and stays there for the duration of the film. This is my number one favorite movie of any genre and has been since I first saw it over 20 years ago. I've been looking forward to the release of the 4K for a long time, and I am happy to inform you that the 4K bluray was not at all a letdown! I'm also happy to report that the new 4K image is extremely clean and free from any specks and blemishes, something the reviewer neglected to comment on. If this 4K was your "Top #1 must pre-order asap", as it was mine, I don't think this review should sway you from buying this 4K. And if the only version you have of this masterpiece is the DVD, you really need to get the 4K. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

      The screenshots coming from the source once they go through editing software and uploaded to RUclips don’t usually reflect a 1:1 comparison with what you see in person.
      The colors in person look excellent and aren’t oversaturated at all.
