There’s a lot of martial arts actors who can throw some amazing kicks and have an amazing variety with the types of kicks they can throw. But Van Damme is the gold standard in terms because of the way he points his toes, the lines from the tip of his toes down his leg to his hip. I think you could take a screenshot of him doing a helicopter kick, place a piece of paper on top and draw a line from Van Damme’s toes to his hip and it would probably be a completely straight line. And that’s his ballet background.

That's an interesting idea. People like Tony Jaa or even Michael Jai White have superseded JCVD in terms of pure athletic ability but I suppose there is something to be said for Van Damme's precision and smoothness.

From my POV, Van Damme didn't just bring the kick shape, he brought the full package. He along with Gary Daniels and you David proved that you can be muscular and agile at the same time. That's inspiring. You mentioned in previous videos and interviews about having a sense of urgency when it comes to wanting to fulfill goals. That urgency is almost starting to hit me now. I'm almost 40 and completely out of shape. But, my long-term goal is to have a physique like Van Damme's or Gary Daniels'.

In terms of on screen martial arts aesthetic, Van Damme's kicks are probably the best looking and most graceful we've seen on film. You could recognize his kicks just from seeing his sillouette. That's why there are a lot of imitators, even Chuck Norris' kicks improved and looked better on screen after training with Van Damme. Not knocking Van Damme, but I think Benny and Bill Wallace type kicks are more effective in a real fight.
The only other martial artist I've seen who's impressed me with this type of ability is a man named Jean Frenette. His flexibility and form is insane and his kicking ability is pretty much identical to Van Damme's level. If you're old enough you may remember him from Inside Karate magazines from the early 90's. If you've never heard of him but curious, there's some old and recent footage of him performing and doing demonstrations on youtube.

What they need to do is give Van Damme his flowers by giving him credit for taking his image from Bloodsport and creating Johnny Cage for Mortal Kombat for those of you who weren't aware of it. They also created Sonya Blade from Sarah Conor ( Linda Hamilton) . Other easter eggs that people may not know about MK... They created Raiden from the Lighting guy and Shang Tsung from the scorcerer David Lopan both from Big Trouble In Little China

Apart from movies Van Damme made lots of demonsrations and shows in Gala and other places. Just look what cut n clear his kicks are and they are absolutely precise and realistic. Look at his legs in order to make such splits and jump the way he did you have to be very well trained and have really strong legs. He was very flexible with perfect control over his legs work. His shape generally was incredible. All right he looks brilliant on the screen but to have such looks one has to go very long path of going to perfection. Sorry for you if you can not see the difference, but his kicks are much more better than anybody's else including Chuck Norris. They did not make joint movie cause Van Damme had been looking 100 per cent better.

I think it’s probably a combination of photo shoots as a model and Corey Yuen ( Yuen Woo Ping’s brother) who may have had an influence on Van Damme doing the helicopter kick with that form. In No Retreat No Surrender ( Corey Yuen was the director / fight choreographer) he throws the kick the same way as the villain in that film that predates Bloodsport. He also throws it in the same way in Black Eagle which also predates Bloodsport. I can’t think of a film with Van Damme where he doesn’t perform the kick in the same way 💪🏿🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥👍🏿
