By far the best TMNT movie. The effects are outstanding, allowing so much emotion and life to the characters, and all practical. Add to that the darker tone, and the great stunt work, and it's like the book characters just came to life on the screen. You can do whatever you want with digital effects and it doesn't hold a candle to seeing physical turtles (and Shredder) come to life.
A bit of a twist on Henson's perceptions; according to Brian Jay Jones who wrote the most recent Jim Henson biography, Henson wasn't a fan of the comics, but thought the idea was a good project for his "Creature Shop" (who had taken a hit financially due to LABYRINTH's failure). The first TMNT movie actually premiered a month before Henson passed away and apparently, he got a kick out of seeing the huge lines waiting to see it saying, "Guess they liked it." It was the last success he ever saw, as THE WITCHES was an unpleasant experience. Author Roald Dahl was constantly sending complaints to Henson about the inaccuracies of the film from his novel (and apparently, Dahl himself even picketed his protests at the premiere).

The funny thing is when this movie first came out in 1990, it was a big deal because I was stationed in Europe at the time. We would get movies typically 6 months to a year after they came out in the United States which by then you can watch them on video. It was the first movie to be simultaneously in the theaters in the USA and in Europe on the day of its release. The line went around my entire kaserne, I had to wait and watch the evening show. I loved it!
I didn't get a chance to see this as a kid in the theatre, even though I really wanted to, but thankfully my mother bought the VHS and my sisters and I watched the hell out of it. Though I can thank a recent Astor screening for finally giving me a cinema experience.
It was around 1991 when TMNT and Total Recall both reached home media that our local video rental business started purchasing surplus VHS tapes of new rentals for people to rent and subsequently purchase if they wanted. As of May 2024, I’ve still got each of the two tapes my dad got of those films from that rental place. There’s no way I couldn’t click on this review of TMNT. Admittedly, part of it had to do with listening for Corey Feldman’s name.
The unedited version was released on DVD in 2004 in the UK. Furthermore, the German dubbing audio track contains several "cartoon-like" sounds in order to soften the violence of the fight scenes. Although the German dub of the film was released with unedited pictures on DVD, the German dub audio version with the cartoonish sounds were still kept, because they were permanently merged into the German voice-dubbing audio.
I still remember vividly going to watch this when it came out. I was 8 at the time and a few months prior I had been introduced to the original comics which I actually preferred over the TV show so was happy to see the movie was heavily influenced by the comics

There was the 10 things about TMNT which was released a few years ago. Alot of the same info, only it covers the Christmas special, comic books and the Venus series.
I am so very much looking forward to the R rated Last Ronin movie. I always wanted the deleted training scenes from the farm to be added back in. Mikey going crazy in the barn was a favorite scene in the original comic book and, in my mind, showcased a small piece of what he would later become. I always thought he got the short end of the stick. Made up for it, in the end, I would say. Anywho: nice work, Minty. This movie enabled my first ever day of off-site school skipping. I was in 7th grade and went to the morning matinee showing of TMNT after calling myself in sick. 13yrs old. Not bad. I still have all of my original TMNT comics from the 80s and early 90s. I love them dearly. Of my collection, I'll likely never sell my Turtles or my Sandman.
He was voiced by Kevin Clash, the guy who played Elmo and Baby Sinclair on Dinosaurs. (Decades later, there were some accusations against him which makes it kind of weird to see his character hanging around with teenagers. But I don't think he was actually ever charged with anything.)
This is still to this day my all time favorite movie. No lie. I’m almost 40 and I still have the cassette I watched when I was a kid. And a DVD and have a digital copy saved.
I was at Phoenix Fan Fusion last year and there was a panel with the screen writer and asked him a question I've had since I was 6 (when the movie came out), why wasn't this based more in the cartoon, but more on the comics that I wasn't as familiar with. The answer "I never watched the cartoon". Can't argue with that
The dark tone was more in line with the original black and white comics, which were written for adults... and is a tone which I actually prefer over the zaniness of the kids cartoon (of which I was a huge fan)... even though I was 10 when the movie released... but I didn't mind Krang and the Technodrome not being there... I liked the movie being more grounded in reality, I really liked the addition of Tatsu, and I love the gritty aesthetic. Not to mention that I was born and raised in NY... so it spoke to me on several different levels. I also prefer the original comics version of the Oroku Saki/Hamato Yoshi origin story... the one they used in the movie.
The Shredder / Splinter origin was SLIGHTY condensed from the comic version. Originally, it was Oroku Saki's BROTHER, Oroku Nagi, who attacked Tang Shen and was killed by Hamato Yoshi. Oroku Saki then kills Yoshi in revenge for the killing of his brother.

The second movie, while not as good as the first, is still a lot of fun.
I think of it as the perfect movie to play in the background at a pizza party.
@@JanetStarChild that’s because it was Jim Henson’s company that made the costumes for the second movie also
The first movie I ever saw at the cinema. Still love it
The fact that the “darker” take on TMNT worked was not a surprise to anyone that read the graphic novels. As this film was closer to that than the cartoon. And they won because they displayed TURTLE POWER. Cowabunga!
I'm officially old, we saw TMNT The Movie at the cinema back then
Also saved the soft drink cans(one for each turtle) from 1991 or so
Shout out to the music from the NES game 🥰 appreciate the trip back in time Doc Minty
I worked with a teacher whose brother wrote this film. She was one of the coolest people I worked with.
I remember going to see this movie on opening day at the theater... Damn I'm old
This is the first movie I saw in the theater.
This movie will forever be my all time favorite childhood movie. It's just that good.
Loved this movie when I was a kid.
The toys were some of my favorite action figures.
Wayne Gretzky.. On steroids!?
All fathers care for their sons.
I loved it!
I absolutely love this movie. I watch it every year.
The Mivie lol
Such a classic no matter how you spell it
I didn't get a chance to see this as a kid in the theatre, even though I really wanted to, but thankfully my mother bought the VHS and my sisters and I watched the hell out of it. Though I can thank a recent Astor screening for finally giving me a cinema experience.
I don't think there are any facts about this movie that I don't already know...but it is fun to hear them in an Australian accent. Thanks Minty!
Minty already did this movie… not sure if this is a reupload or what. But he already did this movie for sure
This one i had watched over and over when it came out. Ive been thinking about rewatching it.
I was never aware that Jim Henson had worked on the Turtles movie, but it makes total sense.
The Jim Henson bit trips me out because of all the stuff they did that frightened me as a young child the Turtles weren't one of them.
I give this one a 9.95/10. Great movie, soundtrack, such nostalgia! April ❤❤❤❤❤
The German discs also have commentary tracks on them that the US ones don't.

Watching this movie now as an adult is like having a nice warm blanket and cup of hot nostalgia...bringing back memories of simpler times.
I still remember vividly going to watch this when it came out. I was 8 at the time and a few months prior I had been introduced to the original comics which I actually preferred over the TV show so was happy to see the movie was heavily influenced by the comics
What in the Mandella effect?!?!
I thought Minty released this already??
I could swear I just watched this yesterday. Wtf??
Yup same here, I swear I recently watched a video just like this, same info. Searched my watch history & couldn't find it. Then I came here to the comments section. Reuploaded & old deleted?
@@drkzero4 i think he has had to a few times recently. If i had to guess i would say music got struck. Ive seen that from other channels, even with vaporwave they could prove they purchased. Kudos Minty if so.
There was the 10 things about TMNT which was released a few years ago. Alot of the same info, only it covers the Christmas special, comic books and the Venus series.
Been waiting for this one! Thanks, Minty!💪🏾
I went to this movie five times in the theater. Then I wrote out all of the dialogue from memory. Ten year-old me was really obsessed with this movie.
All Time Favorite Movie!!!
Splinter scared the sh*t out of me 😂😂
Super shredder scared me asa kid
Nah Splinter was the maan!!
He was voiced by Kevin Clash, the guy who played Elmo and Baby Sinclair on Dinosaurs. (Decades later, there were some accusations against him which makes it kind of weird to see his character hanging around with teenagers. But I don't think he was actually ever charged with anything.)
I remember watching this movie while being in the hospital after a big surgery on my eardrum. I still love this movie! It is still 🔥 👌 💯
This movie is still the best one out of all of them even the current era ones.
Great mivie!!!
I love TMNT the mivie. 😊😊
Can't argue with that
I love this mivie!
Oroku Saki then kills Yoshi in revenge for the killing of his brother.
this is the first mivie (lol) that i remember seeing in the theatres, way back when.
One of my favorite movies of my childhood. Thanks Minty.
I didn't even know there was a mivie!!!
Best mivie ever! 😂
Mivie 😸
11:01 ...That is such an adorable photo! I love the expression on Leonardo; he looks so sweet.
I could say how many times I have watched the old Turlte's Trilogy through the years and I still love watching it.
As a kid from Buffalo there was a rumor that the guy that did the voice for Raphael was from here and we all tried figuring out who it was. When we saw a guy driving a Lamborghini we were convinced we found the guy…..yeah it wasn’t him😔
Nothing like the back stories kids come up with for strangers
But where else would someone get a Lambo? I still think it might have been Raph.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk I like the way you think😎
@@bassman8144 I friend of mine that poses the theory that anytime she see's a Limousine Bill Murray is inside. So, i propose that whenever we spy a Lambo it is being driven by Raphael himself; Josh Pais.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk im keeping my peepers open!!
I love Minty's videos about Mivies. 😂
This film leaves a big place in my heart as a kid born in 85 I was obsessed with the turtles and this was incredible
this was my first time going to the movies..i was 8 years old...i think that was when i got hooked on going to theatres for my must see movies!!!
