      No action hero ever had the charisma JCVD had. Even though I would rank Arnold as number 1 action hero of the last decades, and he had good charisma, nobody ever came close to Jean-Claude in terms of charisma. In a charisma battle, nobody even comes close. JCVD had the looks, the charisma, the style, the pleasing way of combat movement. It was insane.

      The zeitgeist these days of assuming people in popularity are somehow the paragons of humanity is incredibly naive and narrow minded. Roll models being labeled as such by those who only know them from scenes born from the minds of others, constructed off the backs of others, speaking words someone else wrote for them, loving a person who does not exist outside of a slice of celluloid. Its sick. Mentally problematic weaknesses easily fallen prey to offered down to us by the hands of profit generating interests who have no obligation to you beyond hoping to entertain and convince you to give them a little more of your money. The simple truth is ....... humans ... are ... flawed .......None of us are perfect. Anything we do is a result of circumstance, subjected to interpretation, and at risk of reimagining by those who want a 'better story' to tell ...... We need to remember the simple truth behind it all. I am not you. You are not me. They are not either of us. And we may never be them. We all have flaws, and vices, and wants, and needs, and insecurities, and strengths. Many of them known only to us, even if reinterpreted and subjected to the presumptuous and prejudicial narrative of outsiders. None of them have to live in our heads. Have seen what we have seen. It is our uniqueness that sets us all apart. And what offers to bring us closer, to hold us together in celebration of our collective will to be simply us. Flawed humans.
      Jean-Claud is human. Jean-Claud is flawed. Jean-Claud has done nothing more than offer us an hour and a half of entertainment, through the work and sweat of himself and so many others. In my opinion, as we are all entitled to the freedom and privacy of our own thoughts and feelings regardless of interpretations ..... yes he can be silly, and an asshole, and serious, and aloof ..... just as any of us can and have been, and will be ..... Jean-Claud is another shining example of a beautifully unique human being. No higher or lower than anyone else. And his efforts towards the ultimate goal of entertaining us for a moment have not gone unappreciated here. Jean-Claud does indeed deserve to be recognized for his efforts. He is a damn fine action star and I am glad to have seen his works!

    "It's hard for me to judge people, and it's hard for them to not judge me, easier to blame me." True words from a wise man. I can see the hurt and regret that he has. I grew up watching Van Dammes movies and I'm glad he cleaned himself up. We all have demons but for the most part he ripped and kicked the heads off of his demons.

      Agreed 100%. Stallone and Gibson are action heroes (often typecasted) that also happen to be excellent actors. With this performance Van Damme proved himself to belong in that category as well. I love Arnold, but I don't consider him on par with the 3 aforementioned guys, acting-wise. However, Arnold did a fantastic performance in Escape Plan, also speaking his native tongue. I'm talking about the isolation scene. When speaking German/Austrian, Arnie comes of different, he seems less funny and more serious. In that scene, Arnold was frantic and on the edge, and it was really surprising and impressive to see him in that setting.

      @samgott8689 3 года назад +2

      Perhaps, yeah, and that’s part of what gives him mad charisma. I’m mainly saying he took something that a lot of guys wanting to be A-listers would consider a liability and an obstacle and turned it into an asset by just going for it. That’s what we admire about guys like that, right? That ability to work with what you’ve got and make the best of it?

  • @MrBilld75

    That was really deep. I never knew he was so tormented and obviously, he's a decent guy deep down. Just goes to show, money can't buy happiness, but he will find it. By doing what he said, finding his roots, starting over, reinventing himself as the person he wants to be now. He seems so much more well adjusted now and humble and at peace with himself.

      @@gilbert8162 is it "acting tough" to acknowledge that the screenplay was written largely without the participation of van damme? That these words are the words of a writer who never once met van damme until production on this movie began, and that the "finding his roots by returning to belgium" plotline in this movie was invented for narrative drama? It's an incredible performance. But don't conflate actors playing _heavily_ fictionalised versions of themselves for some sort of vérité docuportrait of their real lives.

      Nothing of this happened in real life. All the telling of his life was a build up to the moment he realizes he may die on that post office, and he didn't make anything out of his life, even though he became a movie star.
      It's pretty good writing. Even if it's based on real events, since it's a character based on a real person but in a fictitious situation (and I honestly don't know if all that is indeed real), it's still a pretty good screenplay there, and acted beautifully.

    Hollywood doesn't deserve him. But he's stronger than them, he's better than them.

    I saw this at TIFF>. The director said the two had planned this but weren't 100% sure they were going to go through with it. This was an in the moment decision and it's as real as it gets. Such a great moment.

    What's often overlooked is the abililty to tell one's story. Even if you "feel" it, it doesn't mean you can "tell" it. It's really not that simple to communicate a story to everyone, so gotta give credit where credit is due here. Such a brillant performance (not used pejoratively) by JCVD himself.

    The incredible thing about this is that the rawness and emotional intensity of his performance hits peak just as he brings the fiction of the movie into it and starts talking about what's happening in the post office. An incredible performance

    Jean-Claude Van Damme's performance in this movie is probably the best in his cereal (and he could speak in his native language). I will even say that in this scene he is great, yet I think that partly because this is not just acting, but he is saying what he really feels and this scene is quite personal for him. In my opinion he hasn't got a great acting talent, but still I would call him an actor and isn't too bad. In the past his physical fitness was his main advantage (maybe still is and for his age is really impressive). His biggest disadvantage was always that he had problems with speaking-acting in English, and he couldn't lose his strong accent. If he would be more famous from movies where he could act in his native language or at least would play someone from French-speaking countries, maybe his acting wouldn't be criticized so much. Unfortunately for him, he often had to play American. I will add too: that after a few movies he learned a bit more how to act with his face. PS I must admit that although I do not consider him as a very good actor, and rather I am not a fan of his movies (beside this one and some I used to like as a child but less now) - I feel somehow a big respect for him, especially for his hard work to become so physically proficient and for facing internal and external problems in his life.
