YES. I love how he uses that E power chord to make the "ding-dong" pattern of the tolling bell with the low E, especially because the chord makes it sound fuller and more powerful than if it were just a single note pattern. Plus Cliff just knows how to rest on the G, and then have the perfect lick to go on to the next set of bars. Also the C and A octave lines are peak metal badass. RIP Cliff, you brilliantly creative SOB.

It starts on 19 of the G, but it's much harder to have your hands in a comfortable position on a 20 fret. Also cliff would solo a lot across the main solo and he had a lot more flexibility due to having a 24 fret bass.

So they documented it in tab, and for genres like metal, blues, folk, etc. that's how people learned. Fretted instruments are the only instruments where that's really possible, or else guitar and bass and so on would a similar amount of people reading in standard notation.

FlipierFat // Daniyar It just seems easier, especially if you're transcribing by ear, to know what notes to play first and figure out the fingerings later. Plus, I learned the piano before I taught myself the bass, so I knew the bass clef more going in.

    Lyrics for sing along:
Make his fight on the hill in the early day
    Constant chill deep inside!
Shouting gun, on they run, through the endless grey
On they fight for the right, yes but who's to say?
For a hill, men would kill, why? They do not know
    Stiffened wounds test their pride!
Men of five still alive through the raging glow,
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know
For Whom the Bell Tolls...Time marches on!
    For Whom the Bell Tolls!
Take a look to the sky just before you die,
It's the last time he will!
Blackened roar, massive roar, fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goals fills his soul with a ruthless cry,
Stranger now are his eyes to this mystery,
    Hear the silence so loud!!!
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they see what will be, blinded eyes to see
For Whom the Bell Tolls... Time marches on!

That walking riff/bassline when the guitar comes in is a straight up two step part. Just imagine a bunch of hardcore kids doing that to a band like power trip. Metallica always had some of the coolest riffs

damn I wish I could play bass with my fingers like that. I'm a pick bassist, and while I am able to play this with a pick, there's something more satisfying about playing Cliff's bass parts with your fingers. I still need to work on some of my distortion set-ups to match his sounds off the three albums.

Cliffs parts sound better with fingers because he was a 100% finger bassist, I don't know if I ever saw a pick in his hands.

Wow. I'd always seen Cliff do the downstroke chord part in concert videos but couldn't tell what he was playing. I just thought he was keeping his fingers busy. That was really cool!

Hey man, first of all: Amazing cover, probably the best I've seen in RUclips.
Quick question, did you tune the bass to 453hz to make it match the song?; because your cover sounds spot on which is one of the reasons why all others fell short to me.
    Keep it up brother.

Cliff was the Mozart of bass. RIP Cliff. Thanks for the bass in this song...they should have made you louder in the mix, and made the kick drum louder to give you punch...that's the engineer/producer in me, but I speak the truth.

CoverSolutions When I play the beginning, G string on 19th fret, it sounds higher than it should be. I played this song last night and several people commented that it sounded too sharp, how do I dull the sharpness to get your sound? I double check my tuning and am in standard EADG @440 with only distortion, no fuzz.
