  • A Texas woman says she's gone from being staunchly pro-life to firmly pro-abortion after being forced to travel out of state to terminate a pregnancy. Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks. Watch LIVE weekdays 6-8 pm ET. ruclips.net/user/theyoungturkslive

"Nine years ago, Cade DeSpain messaged a friend about a cute girl he saw on her Facebook feed.
The friend introduced him to Kailee Lingo, her sorority sister at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. Kailee remembers that when she and Cade met, it was "a connection at first sight."
A month after college graduation, Kailee and Cade married in Marble Falls, Texas. They're both proud to be native Texans: Kailee's family has lived there for generations, and Cade's ancestors are among Texas' "Old Three Hundred," the original families that joined Stephen F. Austin to settle the area in the 1800s.
At the time, the DeSpains were both passionately anti-abortion."

I don't have to imagine. I have my Mom--both the pregnancies before me and my sister were catastrophically unviable. And she had to carry them to term, moving and alive until they were born. My sister lived for a little over a day, to everyone's horror, and that prolonged the experience for her in a cruel way. Even more than 40 years ago, she just couldn't afford it so she couldn't do it. Two completely unviable pregnancies, carried to term. Their names were Shannon and Sean. Sean was like this child would have been: undeveloped lungs were the most prominent of his issues. I don't think they were able to know details like that til after the infants were delivered though.
The medical bills from these two experiences were so excessive (and this was +40 years ago!) that they were the deciding factor, even more so than the tragedies, in my parents not trying for kids anymore. My sister and I (both blessedly healthy, easy pregnancies I hear...and we were HUGE babies) were both surprises years later, despite birth control.

It's what they want, when they want, until it happens to them and ONLY THEN do they think they've made a mistake. Throw in religion with the "God's Plan" bullshit and you have a culture now that doesn't care about others and feels they never have to.

I had a pregnancy just like this woman. My baby had heart, liver, lung, brain and kidney problems. The actual diagnosis was Trisomy 18 baby. It had to do with chromosomal abnormalities. Unfortunately I did not find the problem until I was already 31 weeks pregnant. FYI I had 3 beautiful healthy baby boys prior to this one. After all the visits to a genetic doctor and multiple tests run we were told that the chances of the baby surviving was about 1%. If he did survive he would have SEVERE brain damage and multiple other issues. All the doctors I spoke to said he would only live a day or two. Here’s my issue! I was told that I could be induced and deliver the baby at 34 weeks. I have no idea why 34 weeks. I was told by the insurance company that if I terminated ( induced my pregnancy) they would not pay for those expenses. If I carried to whatever their idea of full term then no problem! We were not rich people and the costs to terminate were over $50,000. We cried and cried it was bad enough that we were losing our child but to know that I was going to carry a dead fetus for the next 4 weeks was overwhelming. No one could ever know the emotional damage that this situation put us in especially me I had to carry the baby. So I continued along a couple more weeks and then I had problems and it was imperative I get the baby born. So doctors induced me and 24 excruciating hours later our son Kevin was born with no heartbeat. I was at risk of so many severe medical issues but the insurance said we still will not pay. My husband and I were so angry that when we received the bill for 49,881.75 we decided we were going to pay it in $50.00 increments. We were told as long as we made monthly payments the hospital couldn’t do a thing. It took about 15 years (I’m not exactly sure sure of the timeline) but this was the most horrible experience of our lives and these moronic government senators and congressmen know NOTHING about the physical and emotional damage it does to all of our family. My other kids saying “ Mommy where is my new baby brother? People commenting behind my back about the most disgusting things they make up about what actually happened ( saying I probably took drugs or drank which I never did at all) mean horrible lies. The government needs to shut the hell up. They don’t have medical degrees nor do they have ANY concern about the mother and father. We still think about what happened and I cry . I wish men could get pregnant (they never would because they cannot handle all the issues that occur while we are pregnant they are big babies themselves. I get SO ANGRY every time I hear a male senator or whatever state their emotional feelings about abortion! Shut the hell up!

Every day I am steeped in the horrifying reality that no person with a uterus is safe in my state. I scheduled my vasectomy the day Roe was overturned and had the operation a few weeks later. I refuse to put any partner at risk of pregnancy in any system where society does not have access to the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare. If male-dominated legislatures will not do what's right, I hope women are inspired by what happened in South Carolina and follow suit in other states. Our broken and backward patriarchy is a travesty and our anti-abortion laws are atrocities.

I'm with you. The procedure was scary as hell for me, as the thought of knives down there caused an instinctual fear for something that I went my entire life protecting. But I understood the value of a simple outpatient procedure vs the possibility of putting another human being through even the mere possibility of an unwanted pregnancy, and the choice was clear.
If anybody out there see this and are scared about getting a vasectomy, but want to do it for the right reasons, reach out and I will support you however I can.

Not sure they understand anything more than that "they" needed an exemption from the law. Other people? Ehh, not an issue.

I get your sentiment but I’ve been in her shoes. Used to be pro-life until I needed to get an abortion which completely changed my life perspective. I suffered an identity crisis because of that. I get what you’re saying but that isn’t a pain I wish on anyone. I wish they would learn the easy way rather than the hard way. We shouldn’t be wishing pain on other people

This is her lot. This is what she asked for. Now she should go through with the pregnancy as she called for and as the Supreme Court gave permission to states to make law. The law she wanted. Her law will now determine if she lives or dies within months. Maybe she can get the law changed in time. Start by admitting she was wrong.

Funny how quickly they reconsider when required to live under the law that they worked so very hard to define and instantiate, and how quickly they become victims deserving of both pity and publicity after accusing others of all kinds of vile and disgusting motivations. Now she wants to be seen as a martyr because she had to live with the consequence of her own desires, choices, and efforts.
Glad she finally figured it out, but the timing is too convenient to give any points for either empathy or thoughtful consideration; this is pure selfish interest and situational ethics founded entirely in the notion that what's good for her is right and proper---only once it becomes her personal interest and not one second before. Moral corruption at its most basic from the crowd that screams loudest about righteousness and god and morality---for those guys, not us guys.

Yup, the whole bunch are rotten hypocrites and abusive monsters, who don't even realize that THEY make religion look hate-filled and bigoted.
The want us to behave unethically, in hateful ways, sneering & judging, all so we can be stuck in "heaven", with THEM? Forever?
      Gross, no thanks!
