    I edited and rendered my finished project in 1080p. Then I added that back into Davinci Resolve and rendered it to 4k. It worked like a charm and I can see a significant difference in picture quality. But even better than that, it looks so much better after unloading to youtube than my 1080p vids did . Thank you sir!

      Yeah! It looks much better on RUclips for sure. You don’t have to render it at 1080 first then reimport it, just export it as 4K and you’re good to go.

      Truth! Anyone know how to render just like Premiere? I know exactly which bit depth leads to the best on youtube, but with Davinci you can't control it, or even the same way.
      I hage that the render window is basically a mystery in Davinci. I can't believe a company this big has such a render window, lol

      Try going into your project settings and then to Image Scaling and scroll down to 'Output Scaling' . I have 'Match timeline settings' checked on and under 'Mismatched Resolution Files' I have Scale Entire Image to Fit.
      You can also check your 'Input Scaling' in that same menu and under Mistmatched Resolution Files, i have it set to Scale Entire Image to Fit.

      I agree, it will look better if you change the timeline to 4K. Typically I don't do that because it's quicker the way I show in the video and for RUclips I don't think it makes a big enough difference. 😜

      I agree with you, sometimes the video don't have that nice sharp look to them. Hopefully this will help fix that. Regarding the quality settings, I arrived at those numbers by checking out what others on RUclips were doing along with boosting up what RUclips recommends. RUclips recommends bitrates for 1080 use 10Mbps and for 4K use 40-56Mbps. So far those quality settings seem to work pretty good. Thanks for checking out the video!👍

    @Jason Yadlovski It would have been useful to viewers if you had clarified what resolution your source footage was. And covered the Resolve scaling method preferences. (Ingestion, timeline, and delivery).
    As these factors have a significant impact on the success of changing delivery resolution.

      @@JasonYadlovski cheers, I was reading between the lines, and understood that. But for novices, they need stuff spelled out very clearly.
      I have an ugly project I am upscaling (superscale +timewarp) from 4K. Shot at 25p, but no b-roll and an absolutely incapable cameraman on an iPhone (me). So I was hunting tricks to cover the ghastly mess of the source footage. Unfortunately 2hrs 20 of funeral does not lend itself to massive cuts to the timeline.
      Otherwise I have been making extensive use of your audio tutorials. It is where I am weakest. I really need to sweat out the BMD Fairlight workshop too, but I don’t seem to have the time. (And inevitably it begins at 3am New Zealand time which makes it a hard slog).

      @@danfromzr3289 source 4K, timeline 1080 is ok, then you can deliver using your original 4K source resolution with no losses. However you will loose a little quality in those places where you have zoomed on the timeline to reframe. If you want to maintain the image sharpness during those zooms you can superscale 2x, (or more) those clips. (Creating pixels). But doing superscale -like noise reduction (studio resolve) are processor intensive and best left for just before you decide to export. (Or you will find your timeline bogs down).

    Thank you for this video Jason.
    I am confused though. I thought RUclips only accepted 1080 videos.
    What gives better quality - shooting in 4k and then rendering in 1080 or shooting in 1080 and rendering in 4K?
    What about bit? I filmed in 8 bit on my GH5 then I left the 10bit default in Resolve Project settings. Should I make sure I have the same bit that I filmed in? Would leaving 10bit setting in the Project settings lower my video quality?
    I have the free version of Resolve so I think I cannot load a video shot in 10bit?
    Also if you want to zoom in on a clip in Resolve will that lose image quality in 1080?
    I just want to find the best combination of settings to make my RUclips videos have really good quality.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Hi Gale! Lets see if I can answer your questions.
      You will get the best quality if you film in 4K and edit in a 4K timeline. Next best would be to film in 4K and then edit in a 1080 timeline. This allows you to zoom 2x on the 4k footage and still have the quality of 1080 HD footage. It will give you more options when editing. But keep in mind, working if 4K brings other challenges - for example much larger files, you'll need a more powerful computer, etc.
      Regarding bit - the default of 10 bit in Resolve is good. It just means you timeline can display more colors than your camera can record. Here's a little more info from B&H: an 8-bit file works with RGB using 256 levels per channel, while 10-bit jumps up to 1,024 levels per channel. This means a 10-bit image can display up to 1.07 billion colors, while an 8-bit photo can only display 16.7 million.
      If you are working with 1080 footage in a 1080 timeline and you zoom in the footage, yes you will loose a little quality, but It's mostly likely not super noticeable for online use. Keep in mind, the more you zoom, the lower the quality will be. That said I do this all the time with 1080 footage and it works out just fine.
      If you want great quality videos for RUclips, I would recommend shooting in 1080 HD, working in a 1080 HD timeline and then exporting either in 4K as this video shows or just exporting a high quality 1080 file. I'd recommend custom settings as I show here: ruclips.net/video/V818fsc8BNo/видео.html The standard RUclips preset in Resolve isn't very good. I do both types of exports and they both work well. You can see the quality in any of my videos.
      Just FYI the reason for exporting a 1080 timeline in 4K is just because RUclips will compress the files which cause a slight loss of quality. If you can give them a better file to start with, then when it's compressed it will be a better quality. Does that make sense?
      Hope this info helps! If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask! Thanks for watching!

      @@JasonYadlovski Thanks for the explanation Jason. It was very helpful.
      So I rendered a video I filmed in 1080 to 4K on Resolve. When I uploaded it to RUclips I tried to let it upload overnight but I don't know if the upload stopped when my computer went into sleep mode overnight. It was still uploading the next day and it took at least 15 hours to upload. I rendered it in .MOV - Quicktime - and the size ended up being ~24GB for a 45 minute video.
      It slowed up my whole computer - I have a 5 year old 27inch iMac but the quality was definitely a little sharper than the 1080 render I did.
      When a computer goes to sleep does it stop the upload on RUclips?
      But if I cannot let it upload overnight I do not know if I can deal with not really being able to use my computer for 15 hours.
      Does the free version of Resolve allow you to edit 10 bit in 1080? Is there much of a difference between 100 8 bit and 1080 10 bit?
      What about the ISO that the video was filmed at. I think I used somewhere between 400 - 600 ISO. I know in film the higher ISO is grainy and not as sharp but I have read that up to 1600 ISO is still sharp. But what do you think? Which is more important for high quality sharp videos - a lower ISO or a higher f stop - like f5.6 compared to f4.0?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад

      Hi! Thanks! I think it's ok to export at any ratio that works for your project or video. I would follow the same steps, just change the resolution ratio to match what you want it to be. It's a good idea to set the timeline up with that ratio if possible too. But if not, you can just do it on the export and see how it works out. Thanks for watching!

      DaVinci Resolve will automatically choose the original files to use for all exporting unless you specifically tell Resolve to use the optimized Media/Proxy files for the export. • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Hi! The footage is actually filmed in 1080 on my Canon 5D Mark IV. When uploading to RUclips, RUclips compresses your file a bit, which is why I render it out of DaVinci resolve with 4K settings. The file sizes are generally two or three times larger. Do you think it is always best to shoot the video in 1080p, then upscale it to 4K later like you taught in here?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад

      I do that because my machine can’t handle 4K, but if your machine can handle the 4K and you have the storage, then I’d use 4K. When I use this method, many times it ends up as 1080 on RUclips anyway. Even though I did the quick upscale to 4K. The correct way to get the 1080 to be 4K is to use the superstar feature. But on my machine it would take way to long to render. 😁😁. But I feel like the little boost helps when RUclips compressed it a little.

      Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! So in order to truly upscale it to 4K from a 1080 timeline, there are a few other settings you'd want to change. The method I used in this video is really just to get a little extra quality for uploading to RUclips.
      The best way is to actually have a 4k timeline. That will give you the best results. If you are going to work in a 1080, then here are some settings to change:
      Project Settings --> Image Scaling --> Output Scaling -->
      at the bottom of the window, uncheck 'Match timeline settings'. Then you can adjust your timeline out put settings to 4K. You may also want to turn on super scale, but realize it's going to be much more work for the computer to export the video.
      That should get you the best quality you can. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for checking out my videos! You can use your 4k clips in a 4k timeline. You'll just want to create proxy files and change a few other settings so that the playback is smooth. For example - go to the Playback menu at the top of the screen, then Proxy Mode and choose half or quarter resolution. You should be able to get settings that allow your machine to run good. When you export it, the full res media is used, not the optimized media. I've got a video on optimized media if you take look at my channel. Hope this helps! Thanks again for watching!

      The codec is listed in the export settings. It's right below the Format option. I typically use h.264. Check to see what you are using. Different codecs will give you different size files.
      Just to clarify how I use 1080. I do work with a DSLR, a Canon 5DIV, I film all my footage in 1080 at 23.976 fps for any talking points or 59.96 fps. for slow motion. When i start a new project in DaVinci Resolve I set my timeline to 1920 x 1080 at 23.976 fps. I create my video using that, but when I go to export, I set it to export in 4k. This scales it up, so that when I upload it to RUclips and they compress it, it's doesn't looks as much quality.

    Also RUclips heavily limits the bitrate of any video I upload at 1080p. Doesn't matter how much bitrate my source video's bitrate is.
    I guess Yt does it to save space and to make the streaming feasible on slower internets.
    Being that said, nowadays if I capture anything over 15 Mbits, I try to upload at 4k regardlass of the resolution of my source video.

    I do this all the time for YT videos. Its main advantage is eliminating compression artifacts in the YT re-encode as they allow a greater bandwidth for UHD. I also change the timeline resolution to UHD before rendering. This is in DaVinci Resolve 17.3.2. For those whose render times become many hours look to your hardware. Does it meet the minimum requirements? When I was using the free version of Resolve a 25 minute 50fps video would take about 2 hours to render and produce a file of around 12.5GB. I now use the Studio version of Resolve with hardware acceleration which greatly speeds up the render times.
    You can see an example here. ruclips.net/video/uWBrNEkLacg/видео.html

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  2 года назад

      Same, I do this or all my videos too. Then YT will give you the better vp9 codec. 😜 Also studio definitely speeds things up. Can't go wrong for $299.

    What does restricting the Kb/s do? Wouldn't you want to leave that on the highest number possible?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад +1

      It helps set the quality of the rendered video. The higher resolution the higher rate you need. Restricting it helps give the video good quality without taxing your computer as much. RUclips has recommended bit rates that are much lower than what I show in the video, but remember that RUclips compresses whatever you upload. Generally, you're right, the higher the number the better. Thanks for watching!
