  • EVERYTHING you need to know about NOISE REDUCTION in Davinci Resolve
    In this video I show you everything you need to know about using Noise Reduction in Davinci Resolve. Noise Reduction in Davinci Resolve is a SUPER powerful tool that allows you to reduce noise within your video. All cameras have noise especially in low light conditions so applying Temporal and Spatial Noise reduction helps bring back your video to look super fresh! Unfortunately this feature is not in the free version of Davinci Resolve but that shouldn't prevent you from watching it anyway. (You'll probably end up buying the studio version anyways right? :P)

    This is a good tutorial for people that are not familiar with NR - The only thing I would add that most tutorials don't cover is, that you don't need NR for every shot and you don't even need everything to be processed on a node - i.e. If you have noise in just shadows - key the luma on the node and apply NR to just the shadows - And I still to this day - Do a node splitter and check the noise separately on Red, Green and Blue nodes first - There are a lot of occasions where you can retain more detail by just cleaning up the blue channel, or green, or even red. Also, I tend to add film grain at the end and go back and limit the NR if it is not needed - You have to keep in mind too, that people watching your final product, rarely zoom into it at 400% and pixel peep - So , if you can't see very much noise full screen on a 32" display, and your end target is to the Internet - you might not need any noise reduction at all. Nice job Jamie. Keep'em coming.

    Maybe it's just me, but I kind of like the look of Spatial NR set at Faster. If you put just a SMALL amount, it cleans up that pesky grain. Yes, it does give a little bit of that "blurry" look but again, leave it at a small amount around 2-3, it looks fine. I film at night clubs where low-light and grain are pretty much promised, so I can probably get away with that setting if it actually makes the footage cleaner lol

    One thing to note about the really good NR in Resolve 16 is, that it is very VRAM intensive, especially temporal NR. Denoising 4k footage with 4 GB VRAM seems to be impossible, produces "out of memory" messages and stops Resolve working. At least, I did not manage it without reducing the resolution to HD first.
    I'm still struggling, but that probably forces me to buy a 2080ti with 11GB.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 года назад +2

      @@JamieFenn Thanks for your response! I have a laptop too with a 4GB 1050ti and 32GB RAM. Working with 4k footage (optimized media, also prores LT I think, originally BRAW 12:1), I always end up "out of memory" when using temporal NR or any slightly more complex fusion stuff or effects in the colour tab.
      It got a little better by switching some effects from GPU to CPU, but that still is not working reliably (and gets really slow).
      That is a pity, because despite of that DR16 runs suprisingly smooth on my laptop. Can even play 4k 60fps BRAW directly from my camera in real time (without colour grading and effects, of course.) But so, I'm stronlgy thinking about getting a dedicated 4k (bucks) video editing monster machine.

      @@JamieFenn I agree it should be in the title and not "hidden" in the description, not everyone reads that. But I also understand that would inevitably lead to fewer views. But "tricking" people into watching is not the way to go. And I mean that in a loose sense, obviously.
      Just my two cents, hope it doesn't come off as too harsh. Keep up the vids man!

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 года назад +2

      I wasn't intending to hide it in the description. Not trying to come off harsh either but I don't feel like I have the responsibility of reminding all my viewers of what features they have and don't have in every video. If people are wanting to learn about this and realize they don't have the features, its time to upgrade.

    Your tutorials are always great and fun to follow. But you made a crucial mistake here: Only in "Better" you cannot unlink Luma & Chroma in Spatial NR. In "Faster" you actually can unlink and control them separately. In the Tutorial you state you can only unlink it the "Enhanced" mode.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 года назад +1

      Werid. I couldn't unlink them? Only with enhanced. I think it was a glitch going back to faster after using enhanced.

    • @taikang
      @taikang 4 года назад

      @@JamieFenn Maybe. I use often the "Faster" mode with the sweet spot Luma=2 and Chroma=10 (max Luma=3, Chroma=15, beyond that detail loss is too high). For heavy DeNoising candidates I only work with NEAT Video, since it's light years better than DVR NR. It's like comparing a Skoda and a Maybach.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 года назад

      I guess it just depends on the source footage.

    • @taikang
      @taikang 4 года назад

      Jamie Fenn it, of course, always does. But regardless what your source is, NEAT video does blow DVR NR straight out of the water. I did extensive testing and NEAT beats it in every single aspect.... aside render time: you need a strong system for NEAT.... or patience. ;-)

    I don’t think a small radius would be easier on your computer. I suspect that has more to do with your sensor and how large the grain is you’re trying to remove.

    • @JamieFenn
      @JamieFenn  4 года назад

      Small radius is for lower numbers for the luma and chroma. The higher the numbers the more GPU it takes to render.
