Anyone that ever wore boots for outdoor use knows how important the gusset is. Just as Thursday’s improved the Captain boot by adding the rough out to the inner heal cup to reduce heel slip, I’m sure they will improve the Explorer in a few yrs. As it is now, it’s just a mild weather boot not ready for the field. Great honest review.

Damn bro that’s a huuuuuge find for the rest of us man. Ty. They look good enough to take ‘em to the cobbler and maybe getting some added depending on how much they would want to charge, but I do agree that they should come with them out of the box.

Yeah, at this price point for this boot to have no gusset what so ever IMHO is kinda ridiculous. I wouldn’t personally invest anymore money into them. I would just buy some black Timberlands.

I gasped like I was watching a soap opera when you did that no gusset reveal. I had been really close to buying these boots since they seemed to tick all my boxes, but no way can I do a pair of shoes without any gusset at all. Between tongue slip, random debris, and unexpectedly deep puddles, that's a no go. Not to mention I'd been hoping to use them as a spur of the moment sort of light-hike shoe as well. Hopefully they'll add them someday, and in the meantime, back to the drawing board for me.Thanks for making this review!

Hey, thanks for sharing this video & for your feedback!
It sounds like you're a big fan of the gusseted tongue. Just to set expectations, our boots are actually constructed to be everyday casual boots. They are built using water-resistant construction and should keep your feet dry on typical rain and snow days but they are not designed to be waterproof. They are also great for moderate hiking but if you are planning to do a lot of walking in difficult terrain on a regular basis, we would highly recommend a functional hiking boot designed for that purpose. That being said, we do have a few customers who have worn them on more challenging hikes with no issues (even without the gusseted tongue) but our main focus is for every day wear. The Explorer doesn't feature a gusseted tongue at the moment but we'd love for you to check back if we offer that feature in the future. If you're interested in a pair of boots with gusseted tongue, we recommend our Commander boots!
Feel free to email us at teamthursday@Thursdayboots.com, we'd love to answer any questions you have!

    • @KRTLyfe

Thank you for responding! Please let me know if/when Thursday Boot Company revises this design to include a gusseted tongue! This would be the ultimate, dare I say Unicorn of boots if it did! For me personally it would check all my boxes for daily use as well as light to moderate adventures! This boot is so close to “perfection”, please add the gusseted tongue!

What a joke they don’t even offer the Commander anymore. If Thursday actually cared about design over style, they would have gusseting. My Captain would have benefited greatly from even 1in of gusseting. The tongues slip from one side to the other. Absolutely annoying. If you want a real boot skip out on buying from Thursday and save your money. There are plenty of American made brands and even brands like Jim Green from South Africa are so much more higher quality. Save $200 more and you can have a pair of boots that will last dozens of years.

You're absolutely right about the tongue. I don't need it fully gusseted but even a little bit would be nice. I'm rarely in extreme weather so it's less about the waterproofing for me, but it would really help with the annoying tongue slip I always get.
I also just bought a pair of Titans and boy does the tongue squeak a lot. They don't really seem to put a ton of design thought into the tongue.

Depending on when and where you go in Iceland, I would recommend a proper hiking boot from a well established brand like Salewa, La sportiva, Salomon Arc’teryx etc. I wore Salewa GTX mid boots. Maybe a little overkill but I did not regret it as it was frigid and rainy our entire trip. Good luck and stay safe!

A good cobbler tho could add gusseting
Or if you wanna have fun and you know your way around sewing, buy full grain leather on amazon (I'd choose 1.. for this to keep the slim silhouette but 2mm would be way more durable) and you could add the gusseting

I work with a lot of water and these unfortunately will no longer work, so thanks for saving me the 300 they would end up costing me and not have them work. @@KRTLyfe yeah I have a pair of their captains. Super comfortable and looks great, but no gusset. The tongue constantly slides off to the side and doesn't stand up straight. They have a PR response explanation on their site to justify their cost cutting measure
"A gusseted tongue can marginally deflect water from reaching your foot through the tongue, but in reality, this enhancement is pretty minor. It also comes with the disadvantage of making the boots hotter and harder to put on, meaning it is more of a personal preference than a definitive improvement."

They look great, which I think is the point of Thursdays line of footwear in general. Style over function...they are a vanity brand imo. I can tell by the photos on their website. To go along with those "every man should have in their wardrobe" style guides found all over the internet and in magazines, they have every platform. But not actually made to do any real work in or serious traversal. Not a very usable boot, but looks great on foot. When I was in the military (USMC) my favorite was the Bellevilles...any model, so light and yet supportive... absolutely hated the Marine Corps "rat boot" by Danner, I remember even other branches looking at that boot sideways and so did we...wore them like 3-4 times and was done. But recently (since I been out) Danner released another model that looks a lot better, little more high speed and lower drag on it. Great review bro.

i had a timberland boot like these, the charles street boots. even without the gusseting it was still pretty waterproof even in winter :) i'm assuming thursday also left the gusseting out to cut costs or to make it more breathable (in a paradox sorta way) ??? or to make it easier to put on? idk
Thursday does make some questionable choices here n there. Take their logger for example, the heel has a really thin piece of rubber on it that will need to be replaced within a year probably. I read a comment by them on here somewhere and they said there was multiple choices, but the design they use now actually won. I wonder if its the same deal with the explorers -- they could have put gusseting in, but the final design did not have it for some reason.
Also another strange thing: the thursday captains can have speed hooks and they are an ankle boot, but the logger with is an 8" boot has no speed hooks. I'm biased cause i don't care for speed hooks but i know a lot of ppl want speed hooks lol
did you end up keeping the boots?

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  2 года назад +2

No, I retuned them, the boots would not serve my intended purpose. I can’t find any logical reason to leave out the gusset but money. With out it you still have to unlace the boot to get your foot in so yeah idk. Speaking of speed hooks the lacing mechanisms they attached to the top of these boots… I don’t understand them. They have these little wheels inside of them and seem like they might be super failure prone no to mention they aren’t the fastest or simplest lacing system. I don’t hate speed hooks but I don’t love them either. I will say that I’ve had more bad experiences with speed hooks vs good ones. Overall tho if they gusseted this boot it would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 the lack thereof is such a missed opportunity to dominate this area of the boot market

Wow. I can't believe a boot marketed like this one is missing such a feature... I've not seen anyone else point this out. I am severely disappointed as I was really itching to buy this boot for a long time, but was always apprehensive because I had doubts it was as functional as I hoped it would be. I really like the skimmed down style, especially given I wear slim clothes, but I can't justify spending a lot of money on something unless it's actually a reliable instrument. I was hoping these could be my every day boot. I think I will email them asking about this is stuff and if they intend to update them to have a higher gusset. And pray they say they intend to haha.

Looks a lot like those Canadian Mk3 boots or Addison combat boots with a Goodyear welt and vibram lug sole. Pretty retro since nobody makes those designs in a GYW anymore. Except those older boots have a full gusset and steel toes. Those are very comfortable in my experience.
I guess the reason why they didn’t fully gusset the boot is because of the tongue can crease and cause a bite point on the ankle bone in my experience.

LOL well lets just say I wouldn’t recommend them LMAO… As we enter the end of this season I would say. Max and Redbull deserve the title this year, even tho lasts years momentum got them here on everything but merit.
As for Mercedes, what a way to drop the ball from the beginning of the season to now, it has always been a game of damage limitation and trying to sort out a poorly designed car. Tip of the hat to George for putting an obviously inferior machine on the podium so many times! Lewis new this season was a wash and just enjoyed the year.
Ferrari and MCLAREN…. Well Ferrari get the ultimate WTF from my book they had the strongest opening season in years and just collapsed on them selves and made so many errors that cost them big time.
MCLAREN smh lets just say I feel bad for Daniel but that’s kinda what happens when you jump around from team to team like that.
Alpine surprised me Torro Rosso not so much! Has was impressive the first quarter of the season then lost momentum….
Alfa and Aston Martin … at least they aren’t Williams LMAO IDK what else to say.
Over all it’s been a interesting but not very exciting year.
OH and I’m still not a fan of this seasons cars, I hate that wheel cover, the rear wing and the overall proportions of this seasons cars. A few teams nailed the livery which made them palatable but overall not the best looking F1 cars IMHO.

To be fair, pretty much all of Thursday's boots are positioned as more light/medium casual wear and not heavy duty work or outdoor boots. With that in mind the lack of a gusset makes more sense as it makes them much easier to put on since the tongue can open more for your foot.
