That doesn't surprise me. When I was a kid I played the megadrive/genesis sonic the hedgehog but after that I dropped sonic and went to Nintendo before coming back to sonic many many years later. Sega's advertising was so poor here that I had no idea that there was a 3D sonic game in existence in the early days. I didn't even know the Dreamcast existed.^-^;;;; It was when the Gamecube came out I saw a few sonic games but didn't pick them up at the time so I didn't even know Sonic had more personality than the megadrive games. The sonic game that brought me back in was Sonic Rush and was shocked at him talking. lol Had to catch up on everything I missed. I can see how it's possible for the general public to not be aware of the 3D iterations or even his personality. I'm actually pleasantly surprised when children do know who sonic is when our advertising is still as horrible as ever. There was literally no advertising on TV here for sonic until Paramount started advertising the movie. So if you didn't catch the shows (that were very short lived here), you would never know sonic.

It's not really that he lacked character. It's that his recent portrayals have made him seem so much more grown up in the way he sounded and acted compared to his initial appearance. Sonic is a character who thinks he's cool and definitely has an attitude but the fact that he's cute too and has that Mickey Mouse quality especially makes him charming. This film did that for the first time in many years in my opinion.

What I want: Knuckles and Amy to appear with Tails Longclaw to serve a part as well Eggman to show up and Sonic's quill to be in there as well (perhaps to tease Shadow) And Crush 40 to make a new song
My theory is this. It’s long but here we go: basically, it’s well established that Robotnik hates people so that’s why he uses robots and machines. So in the sequel they could have him build orbot and cubot, or any robot companion for that matter (to replace agent stone). Since he’s lost his mind at this point he can also adapt and embrace the name “Eggman” from sonic. At first the villain can be knuckles and this can tie into the introduction of the chaos emeralds. Eggman can then build Metal Sonic to destroy sonic and anyone from his home world for that matter, i.e. Tails and Knuckles, so knuckles agrees to help sonic and tails to defeat Eggman. So when metal sonic is eventually defeated, the three become friends. The end credit scene can be that Eggman, unbeknownst to the three heroes, stole the green chaos emerald. In the third movie, Eggman realizing that maybe instead of robotics, he has to use a hedgehog of his own to understand how to take him down, and therefore clones sonic using the quill creating shadow. Shadow, unlike sonic, wasn’t fortunate enough to carry on his powers, so Eggman uses the quill to create his iconic skates that allow him to travel as fast or if not faster than sonic. He also gives shadow the chaos emerald, allowing him to use chaos control. Sonic and Shadow have their showdown, at first shadow completely overpowering sonic with chaos control. Eventually, the emerald falls into sonic’s hands, and knuckles gives him the rest in order to help defeat shadow. Sonic becomes super sonic and defeats shadow. Eggman comes with his biggest machine yet (one of them from the games, whether it be the Egg Dragoon or even something similar to the Nega Wisp Armor) to kill all of them, forcing shadow to continue to fight. It’s at this point that shadow has an identity crisis and decides to be his own person, fighting against Eggman to free him since he’s technically his “servant.” Eggman is defeated, and sonic offers to befriend shadow and let him join the group. Shadow declines, saying he works alone and is not his friend. However, he says they aren’t enemies either, and will probably cross paths again one day. They split and the group is at peace...for now. So yea that’s my idea

I think Fowler has a bright future as a Director. Parts with the sticky bomb, the two Quicksilver esque moments and the final battle with Robotnik were VERY well directed.

This movie is a new origin story featuring a younger, alternative and more emotional version of sonic, which isn't canon to the OG sonic franchise at all. Plus, younger movie sonic is referred to as 'baby sonic' meaning he'd be like 3 years old, and since the timeskip said '10 years later', he'd be 13.

I think the point is that they don't want to use the later 3D games. At least, not yet. This was an origins movie for both Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, so chronologically Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles (if they use these source materials for the future sequels) have not yet happened. If they are using the source material, it would most likely be the Genesis games and the comic strips, if not the others, as they are what started it all.
I don't know if it's possible but please for a sequel bring in Sally Acorn and the other mobians! This is a perfect opportunity to do it! There might not be a high chance but it's worth a shot! They deserve it!
Due to the complex stuff that caused the comics to end, I wouldn't get your hopes up on seeing anything with Sally Acorn and friends anytime soon, especially the movie!verse.

This sonic movie was the TRUTH!Dr. Robotnik gotta gain weight like the suit Martin lawrence used in the big mama movies but made into an egg shape and meet knuckles in the Mushroom hill zone laid back jamming to music baby sitting animals and trick him him into thinking sonic his enemy so he can steal the giant emerald from his floating island and put Knuckles through a lot of speed test cause he have the speed power similar to Sonic's to try and steal his power and help him get back to earth from the Mushroom hill zone and create a speed warping machine with Knuckles powering it from his speed,from there he gets knuckles to help him bully and try to capture Sonic on Earth.I hope they make him like the original Knuckles that was able to run as fast as sonic does instead of how they made him on the newer sonic game.Knuckles should be the missing character from the clan that came searching for sonic in the beginning of the movie making him born with the fast running ability like sonic that suppose to be the god like blood line hero for his tribe, but knuckles runs away with it and falls in love with a floating paradise island and finds a huge beautiful Gem that becomes his treasure and trying to steal it makes the island descend so he feels the need to become his most prized possession and protector and don't want it to fall to earth so people won't steal his Emerald or paradise.Just wanted to throw some ideas in there since i know a little bit about sonic and was fan growing up off the video games

The Mushroom Planet Robotnik ended up in is a reference to Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles. Also, at the beginning of the movie, Sonic’s home planet is invaded by echidnas and this is emphasized even more when Tails goes looking for him. So, I believe that not only is Tails going to be a central character but also Knuckles. I just wonder if they will follow the story from the games and introduce the Chaos Emeralds and the Death Egg? It’s a origins movie so following along the Genesis games first would make sense.
I have an idea on how the sequel could be made and what additional elements could be introduced. At least one other sonic character could be introduced (and that's enough for them to make a whole movie on), such as one of the (sonic) girls who would be a love interest and could play a princess role.
I would love to see a sequel and I know LOTS of others would too. You can search on RUclips for "Sonic movie audience reaction tails" and there is a list of FORTY FIVE videos where Tails is revealed at the end and the entire audiences scream to the tops of their lungs with excitement.

Imma be honest, I wasn’t about this movie at first but after watching it, I reaaaaaaally want a sequel. It wasn’t perfect but it was so fun and amazing, really loved the take on Sonic this time around.

I'm pretty sure they made more money than they should of, hell I bet they can rehire and fully pay back all the animators, if not double of what they should, so a sequel seems like a no brainier.
If only animators get treated that nicely in the industry. They definitely deserve it though, plowing through all the hate and backlash to create something amazing.

why do all these interviewers think theres only one game? sonic has had character development over the years aswell as eggman and all the other characters in the sonic franchise. they could have found inspiration from the comics shows and later games for the character development.

I think Fowler has a bright future as a Director. Parts with the sticky bomb, the two Quicksilver esque moments and the final battle with Robotnik were VERY well directed.

This movie is a new origin story featuring a younger, alternative and more emotional version of sonic, which isn't canon to the OG sonic franchise at all. Plus, younger movie sonic is referred to as 'baby sonic' meaning he'd be like 3 years old, and since the timeskip said '10 years later', he'd be 13.

I think The Movie version of Sonic was adorable and relatable on so many dimensions... -and i'd have to buy my mom a box of a Maltesers if there isn't a sequel-

I think the point is that they don't want to use the later 3D games. At least, not yet. This was an origins movie for both Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, so chronologically Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles (if they use these source materials for the future sequels) have not yet happened.
If they are using the source material, it would most likely be the Genesis games and the comic strips, if not the others, as they are what started it all.
I don't know if it's possible but please for a sequel bring in Sally Acorn and the other mobians! This is a perfect opportunity to do it! There might not be a high chance but it's worth a shot! They deserve it!
Due to the complex stuff that caused the comics to end, I wouldn't get your hopes up on seeing anything with Sally Acorn and friends anytime soon, especially the movie!verse.

I hope the new movie actually takes place within sonics world, I liked the whole 'coming to our world' thing for this movie but I think if it just stays that way it will get a bit dull.. It might be cool to see sonic have to go back to his homeworld to deal with a problem involving knuckles?
from Warcraft, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog and you can even include the success of Netflix's Castlevania there seems to be an upswing of really entertaining Video Game Adaptations to film and seems the trend could continue.

This sonic movie was the TRUTH!Dr. Robotnik gotta gain weight like the suit Martin lawrence used in the big mama movies but made into an egg shape and meet knuckles in the Mushroom hill zone laid back jamming to music baby sitting animals and trick him him into thinking sonic his enemy so he can steal the giant emerald from his floating island and put Knuckles through a lot of speed test cause he have the speed power similar to Sonic's to try and steal his power and help him get back to earth from the Mushroom hill zone and create a speed warping machine with Knuckles powering it from his speed,from there he gets knuckles to help him bully and try to capture Sonic on Earth.I hope they make him like the original Knuckles that was able to run as fast as sonic does instead of how they made him on the newer sonic game.Knuckles should be the missing character from the clan that came searching for sonic in the beginning of the movie making him born with the fast running ability like sonic that suppose to be the god like blood line hero for his tribe, but knuckles runs away with it and falls in love with a floating paradise island and finds a huge beautiful Gem that becomes his treasure and trying to steal it makes the island descend so he feels the need to become his most prized possession and protector and don't want it to fall to earth so people won't steal his Emerald or paradise.Just wanted to throw some ideas in there since i know a little bit about sonic and was fan growing up off the video games

The Mushroom Planet Robotnik ended up in is a reference to Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles. Also, at the beginning of the movie, Sonic’s home planet is invaded by echidnas and this is emphasized even more when Tails goes looking for him. So, I believe that not only is Tails going to be a central character but also Knuckles. I just wonder if they will follow the story from the games and introduce the Chaos Emeralds and the Death Egg? It’s a origins movie so following along the Genesis games first would make sense.

I have an idea on how the sequel could be made and what additional elements could be introduced. At least one other sonic character could be introduced (and that's enough for them to make a whole movie on), such as one of the (sonic) girls who would be a love interest and could play a princess role.
I would love to see a sequel and I know LOTS of others would too. You can search on RUclips for "Sonic movie audience reaction tails" and there is a list of FORTY FIVE videos where Tails is revealed at the end and the entire audiences scream to the tops of their lungs with excitement.
If you respect the fans, the fans will respect you... And make your movie a massive success too

Imma be honest, I wasn’t about this movie at first but after watching it, I reaaaaaaally want a sequel. It wasn’t perfect but it was so fun and amazing, really loved the take on Sonic this time around.

Sonic 2 can be sonic adventure dx made in the year 2,022 or 2,023. Sonic 3 can be sonic adventure 2 battle made in the year 2,025 or 2,026. Sonic 4 can be sonic heros all with Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik. Dr Robotnik should create metal sonic along w scratch & grounder. Knuckles & others need to have good hip hop songs like this movie gave us. Wiz khalifa speed me up is awesome as hell. Sonic 2,020 is awesome as hell.
