My dad disowned me in 1989 after coming out to him. He didn’t speak to me for 20 years-until he needed someone to help him in his infirmity. I helped him and put the bad blood behind me. He died and included me in his will, so I guess that last year meant something to him too. I think you should show up at family events. Let them see you thrive. The rest of your family will take their cue from you on how you handle this issue. Be prepared for acceptance from some right away. Be prepared that others will take years to get over it. Slowly, the wall they tried to erect between they and you will fade. Chin up and eyes forward. The world loves those who are able to love themselves.

This breaks my heart as a mom. There is nothing that would keep me from loving and supporting my son. I don’t always agree or like all his choices but I will always be in his corner. I think as a society we have recognize that everyone should be free to choose a life that is suitable for themselves and brings them happiness even when it looks different that the way that you choose live your life. With acceptance and understanding you can find common ground.

Unfortunately, this story sadly has happened to too many people. My family embraced my sibling, and would never throw him out. He was one of the lucky ones.

You’d better marry to protect the others rights if you fall ill, etc.

Acceptance takes time. Sometimes its hard because a person maynot agree or understand. Although I could never not love my children, it doesn't mean that I have to accept all that they are or do.
