After owning 2 square body Suburban's one with doors and one I converted to doors because I was not a fan of the tailgate, I have to admit that I do like the hatch on my 2002 for the same reasons you do. Anything but the heavy tailgate with the window that if it isn't broke and won't come down it just hasn't broken yet). Remember, if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans! I’ve never had a tailgate suburban but I do prefer the hatch over the barn doors about 90% of the time.
I like that astro van 3 door style. Upper hatch and barn half doors on bottom
