- Here are some tips on assembling the wing assembly for the Photon. The wing construction, spar selection, servo installation, and control horn fabrication are covered in other videos on this channel, with links in this video.
Fuselage, tail, and setup videos to follow.
Cabelas, $26 for 6. WalMart sometimes has them. eBay occasionally has some too. Will look out for garden stakes.
thank you so much for your person, and your inspiration for those who like to to build from scratch, or those that have to for budget reasons! i love hotliners, and as you may know, they are some of the most expensive models on the market :( the value is in the materials that create the stifness in the wing and fusalage. please,do a build on a three section, tapered wing with multiple spar channels per wing. not sure how to join three sections like on long range duration fvp
Ed, Great videos sir! Thank you for your time and effort documenting your talents for less talented people like me:) I noticed in your videos you do not glue the spar in place. Is it advisable to glue it with hot glue if both sections of wing will be permanently joined? Thank you again!
There are videos to cover the complete construction of the plane. Specs are in those videos and in the information section. I don't do printed plans.
Unfortunately the thumbnail generator doesn't work like that. Believe me, I have anguished over this challenge. There used to be a predictable formula for the thumbnail generator, now it's essentially random. Bruce is a RUclips partner and is able to upload a custom thumbnail. He just happens to also use that same image as the title frame for his video. FliteTest is also a partner, but notice their thumbnail image is nowhere in the actual video. I hope to be a partner someday.
You could certainly glue in the spar but it's not necessary. If you are concerned about it sliding around inside the wing then applying a ring of tape or dab of glue at the center would hold it in place. The tape at the joint is what really holds the two wings together. I've flown a million flights with the spar just hanging out freely in there and never had a problem though.
They have a new "partner" program that just means you monetize at least one of your videos. Against my better wishes I did monetize one of my obscure videos but still no custom thumbnail. How about you? I'll take any advice. I guess I just have to work harder and be patient. Now you'll have 42 subscribers ;)
For plain caps I actually just put the wingtip down on the plastic and traced it out. Once cut and affixed to the wingtip you can use some sharp scissors to trim it down nice and tight to the corner. The winglet style I use are 2" height, 3" straight rear section, then tapered down to the forward part of the camber line, which is traced on the plastic. There's really no wrong way to do it. Whatever looks cool and gives sufficient height to serve as a wingtip skid is usually fine.
Start with 30%, or 2" rear of LE, then work backwards if you want more efficiency and responsiveness. If you get to the point that your elevator trim is totally flat, working on going down, stop there.
Yes, I think the natural progression would be a 90" wing (3 wing sections) and a 60" fuselage (2 tube sections). I would love to see that - you should be the first! Or even bigger........
Man, I'm always looking out for some. There are some fellow Aussie builders in the same boat, and we're struggling to find a source for you. Stay tuned, and look out wherever you are for the easy-peel foamboard!
GO to your local archery range. I would be willing to bet that you could find broken arrows in the trash. You may not get full length ones and you will have to cut off the arrowhead insert and feathers. When I have done so I found that the nock comes out clean ususally but the arrowhead or arrowhead insert is glued in very tightly.
Hobbyking or RCTimer. They're 1cmx1cm and about $.30 each, depending on quantity and source. Very handy to have!
Where do you get the carbon fiber wing spars? In my area in can cost up to $80 for a pack of arrow rods. I have found that pvc garden stakes from walmart are very rigid and come in many sizes, and range from only 88 cents just over a buck. They are very rigid and fit your wings perfectly. Would you be able to do a comparison? Im sure the weight is much higher on the Garden stakes though.
hey Ed.. i made a really big photon a while back, crashed it enough times to rebuild the fuse from a V-tail to a T-tail, and then discovered slope soaring.. :D
I crashed it again enough to rebuild a third time and the result is a 96" Armin construction wingspan. E.A. style 48" triangular fuse
man i love it. thanks again for your vids and inspiration
and btw.. ive always wanted to ask you.. Did YOU see the big triangular UFO over Pheonix in 2007? Anyone you know see it or get photos/video?
blue skies n green gardens bro
Great videos.. I learned a lot from you. Thanks very much.
was your left hand deformed by injury or was it congenital? either way, you do excellent work. btw, you sound a lot like mike rowe.
Hey man is there any way you could Put blueprints or specs or something up For the whole plane

I concur with Ed. I used to glue to two halves together, but it is so much easier just to use the taping technique. Plus there's the added benefit of there being a weak point that can give way in the event of a crash so that perhaps damage is minimized. Don't ask me how I know that :-)
it's devastating to see such awesome planes, but not have access to the readi-board or something similar down here in Oz. maybe one day :P
instead of the 4 minute still at the end why dont you put a 6-7 second thumbnail at the beginning just like bruce from the xjet channel
Ed, I am jumping into foam built and while I have many questions, I'll wait to ask them all. (I have watched most of your great videos and will be using them to build from) My build plan using your Armin wing will be on a mixture of the Photon and Axon - probably sized close to a Photon, but as a pusher. When balancing your CG, at what percentage of the chord are you finding works best? (From the videos it appears you find the 5" chord is ideal for both Axon and Photon, so I'd stay the same)
Thanks Ed. I just built my first two wing sections yesterday, and this clears up some details. My Photon should be done in time for father's day. Since my dad destroyed a flying wing i built for him, this will have a 2.75" OD fuse to accommodate a KK flight controller, for stabilization.
Now off to build a Noob Tube for myself.
what is the Measurement on the wing caps . the ones u made from dvd case
Thanks so much Ed. What is normally the envelope window for CG - 1/2" ?
Hello Ed.Was wondering where you get your magnets. Thanks.
Wow another great build and I haven't finished my AXON yet lol .Thanks Ed
Well here is the glider I was asking about!
Photon is definitely in my build list
excelentes ideas
Will you need alorons or not
+Mason Lindner Yes, definitely need ailerons on this plane.
