Thank you, this is so helpful! As a woman doing my entire bathroom remodel by myself, I’m loving the girl power! You gave me all the extra confidence I needed! Your bathroom looks beautiful!
A helpful tip: Should've replaced the angle stop (water valve @ the wall) because it's most likely as old as your last toilet and that rubber washer inside *will* deteriorate on you over time, meaning the next time you need to shut the water off, you won't be able to. You don't want that kind of angle stop, you want to get the quarter turn kind which use a ball valve to stop the flow, no rubber washer needed. You have the compression type which, if you get lucky, can be replaced by unscrewing the valve from the nut and fitting a new valve in it's place. All in all, you did a fantastic job for your first time, even though the caulking was a bit preempted. Good job.
I'm so proud of you taking on this task and despite the few challenges, you endured to the end. I'm planning on installing my own toilet to save me money. After seeing this, I'm totally psyched.

The next person who moves in should be thankful. 😄 Thank you for making it look so easy.
Very well done!! I love your vids! You make everything look easy. The only thing I would change is the caulk. I don't ever caulk the bottom of toilets. The reason is because how would you know if it is leaking once you caulk it. Think about it. If you seal the bottom and it is leaking then the water will just destroy everything below the toilet and you wouldn't know till it was too late.
I agree with you, Matt. I typically do it that way as well, but after reading the article, I tried a different way, where it says that the caulk actually helps with creating a better seal and helping to prevent rocking, which could cause leaks. I am planning to take a plumbing class for my carpentry program at my comm college and this is something I'm looking forward to getting the instructor's opinion on. I agree with you, though. At least, caulking early would prevent you from knowing for sure if there is a leak. However, the instructions for the toilet also recommended putting the sealant on the bottom edge. So it's a toss up! Lol

Ah, It’s amazing how much that little demonstration just helped me... Thank you, ma’m. The instructions with my American Standard toilet were not quite enough. But I’m still stoked on this pressure assisted dual flush I just bought from them.

Hi I'm a plumber by trade . Here are some tips that will help . The plastic washers you used with the bolts are as good as trash use a metal washer and nut instead itll hold the bolt firmly in place while setting toilet and bolts can be used as a guide to centering toilet and you lower it onto flange and make pulling the toilet much easier in the future. I use wax rings with collars if the flange is to low I use a jumbo wax . I also press and twist wax ring firmly against flange . I dont usually coulk a toilet but if I do its after I have set it and I use bath and tub with ( easy water clean up ) thats important . Also i use smart caps when securing toilet to the flange , they come with disk like washers you set then the metal washer then the nut no cutting needed cap just screws right on no mess to clean up .
I hate seeing everybody's perfect projects and then I go to do it and it comes out completely like crap and I can't figure out what I did different from them.
If you hire a "plumber" and he caulks around the toilet. Fire him!!! Never caulk around the toilet. If it rocks you need a thicker wax ring or may need to adjust the flange height.
@@gabrielbron5918I thought that’s what it was for too. Never caulk around the toilet? Is there a different compound to put around the toilet to prevent water from going under the toilet?
Even I know you should, you do NOT want all different kinds of mold to start growing under your toilet because of water, chemicals and over bacteria getting under the toilet. The same thing applies for the tub, especially the tub of you think about it, all that water, makes me cringe thinking how much mold those can create
I'm getting ready to remodel my bathroom, although it is going to be one piece at a time. So, thank you for this, toilet will go first, then vanity. Tub is another deal. Replacing oyster shell (yuck) with white. :)
I remember the first time the water pressure had me thinking I did had something wrong my supervisor laughed at me so hard doing maintenance assistance training, but now its easy.
OMGosh! I don’t believe it!!! Mine does the same thing but it’s more of a chirping sound! Seriously! That’s why I’m watching YT videos on toilets!!! I’m going to try this, maybe it will quit chirping! Thank you! 👍👍🥰

An even better reason to caulk after setting toilet is the possible leaks. I know we all sit the toilet perfectly on the wax ring, but just in case it didn't get sat correctly allowing a leak, better to wait a few days before caulking to see if any water seeps out. If caulked at time of placing toilet any leaked water would be trapped and not allowed to run out on floor. On a concrete floor might not be a big problem, but with a wood floor there's the possibility of rot latter on.
Love that you did it yourself even when you doubted yourself and got your husband you still did it ! Nice job ! I’m using this video to do my toilet today , totally caulking first , I love that idea
Hey btw, an experienced man said “don’t ever caulk around the base of your toilet, because if you have a leak, you will not notice it and it can soak down into the wood.”
I wish I could tell you, how much my mom loves when her 17 year old daughter wants to renovate the house out of no where 💀 thank you for the inspiration!!
Changed out a toilet once, harder than I thought, but doable. Wish I was bold enough to try a pocket door, but not willing to make a mess that big! Next goal, use a nail gun to add quarter round to remodeled bathroom & a table saw to cut the wainscoting panels! You inspire me & my knees are 57!
Vicki, yes! Changing a toilet is easy in theory, but the little issues that can come up make it challenging. Out of the 3 I have installed, this one was the hardest, and partly because of installer stupidity (me!) and because of issues like not knowing there was simply air trapped in the pipe when turning the water back on. And now I am having second thoughts about that waxless toilet seal. I dont feel it is creating enough of a seal so today I may pull the toilet and replace it with a double thick wax ring. The previous 2 did fine with wax and at this point, I dont think I want to take a risk and having a flood unexpectedly!
You are a wonderful woman who does so much in her home and I’m like I wish I had your talent. My hubby does nothing around the house. I do what I can but I tell him I wished I’d married a handyman! Lol! Love your videos!
up2meable- Watch 3-4 videos on installing toilets and you can do this job yourself . Some DIY jobs are actually very difficult but this is NOT one of them . The hardest part is " sitting " the toilet on those vertical bolts . Get some help with that part . Many houses have 2-4 toilets . Worse case scenario , hire a " handyman " to supervise the job you are doing on one of them , then use your knowledge and experience in the future on the rest.
OMG SERENA YOU'RE SUPER STRONG HOLDING THAT TOILET WITH ONE HAND!! YOUR NAME SHOULD BE SUPERWOMAN ANYHOW LOVE THIS TUTORIAL NEED TO DO MY UPSTAIRS BATHROOM NOW I KNOW HOW, THANKS TO YOU!!
You can totally do it! I ran into a few snags I didn't include in the video, like the leaking from the bolts holding the tank to the toilet, because I didn't screw those in too tightly. But overall, it's an easy job! You can do it. Thanks for watching!
Girl power💥!!! You make some of the best, most comprehensive remodeling content on RUclips. Thank you for that tutorial. My husband was just telling someone the other day that I could help them change their toilet 🚽....😳😳😳 lol after watching your video, I for sure can help them with that now😅. With those beautiful walls and floor, you should just upgrade the whole vanity with a new faucet. Why bother with that outdated one? Yes you would save a couple hundred bucks, but it’s still outdated. Everything else has been upgraded except that. You should just go for it.
Short toilets are actually better for you. Since humans were designed to squat really low to poop. If you dont squat far enough, it can be harder to use the bathroom
Nice. I use the rubber ring too for my 3 toilets instead of the wax ring so it’d be less gross in the future. Toilet bowl and tank together weigh 100 lbs so better to separate them during the removal/install process. If your toilet rocks, it’s due to uneven floor. Insert shims. There’s no way the caulk will keep it steady with a 150lb person sitting on it.
Things my 31 year old self says "that is a beautiful toilet, I love that toilet...I wonder if there's a link!" Things I care about now as a homeowner, lol. We need to replace our downstairs one and this gem may be the one hahahahaha.
I saw a nifty trick someone did to drain the toilet bowl after the flush: take a large bucket of water and dump it into the bowl. The added water, with no refill creates a vacuum that draws much of the water in the bowl with it down the drain. Looked pretty slick, and removes most of the water in the toilet.✌
I might as well add my experiences. I tried the rubber gaskets, and unless all the stars are lined up correctly, they usually will not fit correctly. Stick with the wax rings; they always work. Another way to make the installation bolts stand up straight is to put a washer and nut on the bolt on the top side of the flange. Everyone is correct about never caulking the toilet because a leak will damage your house before you know about it. Also, replace the water supply line with the very best quality one with metal mesh on the outside. Our neighbor had the plastic nut on his water supply line break while they were gone on vacation and it created over $100,000 in damages. It only takes 5 minutes to remove the tank and the toilet is easier to handle with the tank off. And finally, this is not an easy or quick job unless everything goes perfectly. Expect problems.
So great to have a womyn handy gal! I’m a, 69 years old and will be changing out the toilet by myself and this has helped me so much!! Thank you. I am officially toilet inspired! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOVE this sooo much! The tips and tricks, the things you learned not to do, lol- so encouraging and inspirational! One of our toilets needs a new seal and I've been trying to convince hubby that we should do it ourselves. After watching this, we're going to give it a try! AND we too are opting for this new waxless type of seal. hopefully I'll remember to report back. ;)
So impressed with you lady ! I have been staring at my toilet at home for so long now wondering if I also should change it or not. Or to totally revise my whole layout, which will take a lot of work, but this works too. Just replace it with lighter colour items. I don't think my old large toilet even exists either. But good going to get this kind of size from American Standards.... In Europe I realised that most toilets are very small. This size is what I also currently have too.
Thank you so much for posting this video, it gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to remove my toilet to get an object out and save me a plumbing bill. Thank you so much. I appreciate you!!!!
Wax rings are generally inferior. Good job. Quick tip. Always fasten the bolts to the flange, so they don't move when placing the toilet over the gasket. Also, many toilets are not friendly to fastening the tank to the bowl from the front.
Plumbers in my part of the world are taught to never caulk around the bottom of a toilet cuz if the gasket leaks you won't see it and causes a huge hidden water damage under there.
This is why the original toilet was not caulked. I can't believe a plumber recommended doing that. As we all know what gets flushed, it's not just water that will damage the house if it leaks and the damage could be extensive by the time it's discovered. If it was my house I would go through the trouble of removing the caulking.
Thank you for this tutorial. I love how you explain during the demonstration. Some tutorials explain for like 15 min. before doing any demonstrations at all. Haha I wish a lot of you tubers can follow your example. BTW extra points for getting in there and doing it

I love how you show your mess ups and what you did wrong.
I HAVE to show the mess ups because if I mess up, you're less likely to mess up after learning from my errors! Lol
@@ThriftDiving yes absolutely
I hate seeing everybody's perfect projects and then I go to do it and it comes out completely like crap and I can't figure out what I did different from them.
@@ThriftDiving i think you are a hero doing all this work alone but youll ruin your back with no help i wished i was near to help
Great tutorial for non-handy women. It is wonderful to receive detailed videos for women by women. :)
If you hire a "plumber" and he caulks around the toilet. Fire him!!! Never caulk around the toilet. If it rocks you need a thicker wax ring or may need to adjust the flange height.
Dumbest comment I seen in a while
Exactly! Crazy idea to do that, especially if that’s just to level it! 😮
Caulking around your toilet isn’t to prevent rocking. It’s to prevent water, dirt, and other liquids from getting up under the toilet.

Keep up the good work.
Omgosh love it! My fiancé and I are looking to purchase our first home, and we expect to do some minor upgrades...love your videos!!
Thank you for this video. I watched it today and then replaced my old toilet via your advice first time!
Thanks again
Thank you for sharing! Your powder room is beautiful! Impressed by your ingenuity to get things done!
OMGosh! I don’t believe it!!! Mine does the same thing but it’s more of a chirping sound! Seriously! That’s why I’m watching YT videos on toilets!!! I’m going to try this, maybe it will quit chirping! Thank you! 👍👍🥰
+Thrift Diving: Your an awesome Teacher Sis! I will attempt this tomorrow. So happy to be a new subscriber.
Cool... I've never replaced a toilet before.. but after watching your video with great explanations, I have some confidence to do it , possible sometime in the near future...
I hope you're feeling better. Sneaking in this video kinda late huh?? No worries I don't sleep much, so I'm here to watch!!! Fantastic job taking on anything that comes your way!!! Until the next one Dirty Jersey out!!!
HA! Late is the only time to get videos up when kids are around due to summer vacation! I can't tell you how many times I heard today, "I'mmmm boooooorred!" Interruptions.... LOL. I'm feeling better but still coughing up nastiness! LOL. Thanks, Mike!

I never need to do any of these projects I just love watching them
HAHAHA, well, hopefully one day when you need to do them, you'll be ready to go! :)
Hi can you please advise how to know the floor level before you installed that ring
OMG this is the video I've been searching for. You have inspired me to go replace both my toilets.....I can do this.....thank you
Hey btw, an experienced man said “don’t ever caulk around the base of your toilet, because if you have a leak, you will not notice it and it can soak down into the wood.”
right. I never get why people do it, wouldn't you want to know that toilet leaks lol
I typically don't
i always heard the caulk significantly reduces water noise. as well as wrapping the pipes
@@nicholascubides the wax ring already dubs any noise from water
true
Thank you so much miss, my dad left this responsibility on me after wen put tile down I had to wait for it to dry and this video helped me a lot
I wish I could tell you, how much my mom loves when her 17 year old daughter wants to renovate the house out of no where 💀 thank you for the inspiration!!
Haha, that is awesome! It is a great skill to acquire!
Excellent video! One of the most articulately explaned videos i've seen!
Great job! Our new bathroom is in limbo, waiting for a couple of items that are on back order. It’s useable, but not photo ready!
I love you’re voice and you should be on hgtv ! You’re perfect for you’re own show ! ❤️❤️
That is so sweet! I've always wished I had a different voice, so it's so nice to hear when someone likes it. You've made my night! ♥️

Thanks for watching!
very inspiring vdo
She did not do it with one hand
Hello Samantha
How are you doping today?
Omg 💯 same😂😂😂😂
I saw a nifty trick someone did to drain the toilet bowl after the flush: take a large bucket of water and dump it into the bowl.
Lmao
Extremely helpful and informative video. Thank you very much.😊😊
I don't even need to change a toilet, but I found this video very helpful. Now if i ever need the info, I'll know how.

So great to have a womyn handy gal! I’m a, 69 years old and will be changing out the toilet by myself and this has helped me so much!! Thank you. I am officially toilet inspired! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing my family and me just bought a old house from the 1900 and there is a lot of thing to repair
Thanks for helping me out, I installed my first toilet in my life!! Thanks
This is a very helpful video on installing a toilet.
Thank you so much for posting this video, it gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to remove my toilet to get an object out and save me a plumbing bill. Thank you so much. I appreciate you!!!!
You made it look so easy. I am thinking of taking out our low flow toilet, yes it sucks and replacing it with a standard bowl.
Wax rings are generally inferior. Good job.
Quick tip. Always fasten the bolts to the flange, so they don't move when placing the toilet over the gasket. Also, many toilets are not friendly to fastening the tank to the bowl from the front.
Wow well done my friend looks great. .you did an awesome job🌟🌟🌟
Love your videos. Thank you so much.
Try this 1....maybe can help.. about TB installations.. thank u
6:35 what a woman, I don't even know if I could pull that off. You rock.
Haha, it was definitely interesting!
@@ThriftDiving Champion! You Go girl.
You are a beast for doing this on your own! Awesome job!!!
Greta Job on tutorial. Nicely explained.
Thank you, Mathai! :)
I came here for no reason...
No regrets.
Thank you for this tutorial. I love how you explain during the demonstration. Some tutorials explain for like 15 min. before doing any demonstrations at all. Haha I wish a lot of you tubers can follow your example. BTW extra points for getting in there and doing it
Haha I feel sorry for your back. Always caulk afterwards, check for leaks first.
