- Sunanda (60) and her dog live in a secluded and a scenic bungalow far away from the city. She lives all alone and keeps to herself. She doesn’t have many friends visiting her Just a boy who comes to visit Sunanda time and again to deliver her monthly provisions. They say that an idle mind is, a devils workshop. But Sunanda’s mind is not idle. Sunanda’s home hosts a morbid secret. Lost and Hound tells the story of one day in Sunanda's seemingly mundane life, where she is visited by a cop, who inherently feels something amiss.

There were a few things that gave hints
The Spoon : when the spoon fell accidentally, she said the spoon was ruined and replaced it with a new spoon. Her elder son was ruined , he left her. She replaced him with her younger son whom she would not let be ruined.
The Hound : she feared if she unchained her hound he would leave her. Same with her son.
The Bonsai : she wanted to control & restrict everything that was hers. Be it her bonsai, her hound or her remaining son.

Unexpected ending. Some mother's always do this with their children's but not physically only mentally. Nice story.

The mother is cruel, I must say. No one has right to put such restrictions on others, even if they are their children. The mother must be sentenced for two reasons:
1. For treating her son cruelly.
2. For misguiding the police and compelling them to search for her son.

Very true, mother's try to chain their sons not physically but mentally. This is the gift of patriarchal society where women don't know their existence without a man, be it a father, brother, husband or son. When a women marries and come to her husband's place, she had to face many challenges as her mother in law is not ready to leave her son, then the women find the solace in her son and her whole world starts to revolve around the son but then when her son marries the same insecurity again starts to creep in and the cycle goes on and on.

haa haa...but what's the point keeping him chained like this. Is she spending time with her son? And your point is meaningful, when son marries the widow mother feels left alone, no space in son's family. She is jealous to son's wife. And 99.99 % it happens that even the son's wife is jealous of MIL if son treats his mother with respect in presence of his wife. And cold war between two women starts behind son's back. Son goes to work and war front becomes active! And poor widow mother is she does not have any other option but to live with the son becoming 24/7/all the years she lives as a widow on this earth, she is a slave camouflaged as a mother of the son/MIL of his wife!

Extreme but psychotic love of a mother towards her young son,she didn't want him to leave her alone like her elder son.

but how could she deprive her son of not enjoying his life! This is so cruel and so selfish. I would can not even think such a treatment to my son. I would rather offer living all by myself if I sense I am being any type of stress on my son's life because I am living with him. And will not give out any hint that I chose to live alone is for the above said reason.
Fear of being abandoned by her son made her so mentally insecure that she became so insane that she kept everything and everyone in captivity who were dear to her.

Western people kitne daring hote hain,kitne crimes,illness or chahe kitni mehnat kyo na karni pade,phir bhi jahan chaho jab chaho tanha reh lete hain,ye ham hi hain jo kisi na kisi ko pakad kar gale pade rahenge.
metaphorically speaking this movie brings out the truth of love that captivates a person, the one who does this to another is still thinking this is the way to love, while the captive is living in boundation.

I guess the slow pulling of the food plate by her son into the cage makes this all the more scary at the end....

Well crafted movie.Shows that the perspective of a parent especially a single parent.How she develops insecurity to such an extent that she entraps her younger son-symbolically shown as the bonsai which if left alone would have blossomed into a tree.
4 types of sons.One who has abandoned his mom n settled in US( today's reality) 2nd son(Sub-inspector) who cares for his mom(also a possibility) and the 3rd who has fallen victim(many do get trapped mentally in a mothers unreasonable demands)
Last bt not the least The dog Given an unusual name Mahesh.As if he is a son too.His job- To protect her .But always chained no freedom.
A human being is ultimately selfish be it a mother or otherwise.
Her Purity is extended only till the child is dependent on her where she pours her love for him.Once s/he is grown she needs to be compensated- which is forgotten by most youths today running the rat race.

MVK You mentioned that today’s reality is children settled in US or foreign countries abandon their parents that’s a very generalized statement which in not quite true, I have seen children settled in US not only call their parents but many parents prefer to be just visiting and not staying permanently for various reasons like weather only 4 month of summer rest of the year cold weather secondly mobility is a big issue in US if you don’t drive car you are dependent on others your children to take you out which is not possible every day after 14,15 hours spent in traveling working that means parents can go out only on weekends it’s like a jail, In India they can walk have lot of public transportation much more easy not dependent whereas attending their emergency, sickness and so on I have personally seen many many children son or daughters coming to India and helping at the same time in my own family in India son staying in the same city staying separate from parents which is ok that way relationship can be better and not bitter had no time and desire to visit parents living in same city there were no fights no reason, he would just visit parents once a month or once in two months for half an hour and we see , hear many stories of neglecting old parents in India so it is not correct to say only children living in US neglecting parents I can. Give several real time examples of children staying in US taking care traveling for sickness, emergency of parents.

This is the kind of mother who is capable of doing what she has done to her younger son...bind him just like the bonsai just for her own selfishness. Oh many gosh. So many confused people in the comment section. This is my explanation for the ending:
Her elder son going to US affected her mentally. She mention that she hasn't seen him in ten years. Did you also notice that she said she loves the dog but doesn't ever untie him, because he might run away or leave. Her younger son also went out to parties, never listened to her. She has a fear of abandonment.
She has locked all the things she loves so they stay close to her. Her younger son, bonsai plant and the dog.
Also, she like to have control, you notice the bonsai plant and the wires. It's quite a nice story. Shows how just normal people like us can be affected by life events.

The parent should let them kids grow up and have their own world no need to cage them. If their want to stay with u their will stay otherwise what the point of caging them. Elderly should have their own life like travelling and other interests. And have their social circle.

It does happen... One of my neighbors locket his mother like this... and kept her like this. This ia a psychological problem... Diagnosis is difficult just by watching a half n hour film.. but this is fear of abandonment.... Major Trust issue
She locked her son underground so that he won't leave her like his elder brother. And leave her alone. Because she wasn't ready to stay alone.
This is torture, illegal imprisonment and slavery a very grave and heinous crime.
She was senile.
She should be arrested and punished and the poor son should be freed and released from her clutches from his old lady.
From her perspective, his son was criminal. If you have parents you cannot leave them alone. Think for a moment what would be the state of the child if his or her parents leave him or her alone?

I had seen this short film before some years.had hurt me very much. Still l had wanted to see it once again. Today it was fulfilled. I am a mother also.l can't imagine a mother could be so rude and selfish. No never.
There's one Q though.... what was done to him to not be able to speak/ shout? His voices/ cries for help should have normally reached someone...

There is this eerie feeling from the beginning.
Looking at the age of the protagonist, the viewer gets the feeling how & why she is alone.

Dictatorship qualities in a mom . They try to control everything, your friends , your food, your clothes, your decisions . At last imprisonment
Firstly, why don't her son pretends to be sick to be free? Secondly, she can get a rental property build in her compound and have a tenant. So many solutions but an evil brain can only think of evil ideas.

WHAT was the purpose of this film?? Whoever thought of this psychotic script, is obviously UNfamiliar with a mother's psyche, and has my sympathy!! I truly believe that film makers have an obligation & a responsibility. With good social messages make a positive impact on impressionable minds, and then take credit for contributing to the common good, OR take the blame for the wrongs & dysfunctions within their society, nation & the world at large.
