Due to the likelihood of Ginny having contracted it from a World Noble, this makes me wonder if the disease was named after the Celestial Dragons or vice versa, and that's a part of its rarity down in the Blues. It also brings into question whether the World Nobles' space helmets are for more than just not breathing the same air, like say for sun protection (Marie Geoise seems to be the only place off the top of my head that they seem to willingly take the helmets off outside). As for Nika, him being a sun god would cause extra fear in the Celestial Dragons if Nika's powers are actually connected to it.

Tbh, im an artist and i absolutely loved this tragic chapter being in mostly sketches pushed it to a whole other level of raw emotion. It felt unstable like kuma not trying to break after all this hardship. At least that's how i felt when i read it.
What sold it even more to me though because the happy moments were more clearly finished. What made me think it was intentional, and honestly I would kinda like it to stay as is because of how effective it worked out being. But yes Oda needs a break, and I hope he is okay.
"Tbh, im an artist" No you aren't. you can't even tell the difference between good and bad manga. a writer sends in a submission halfway finished and you rave over it. You know what that means? It means you're a complete poser.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Kuma’s final attack is a devestating ursa shock that releases all the pain he’s taken in his life. If he does turn up Saturn is in for a bad time…
I want her for next straw hat imagine that’s their apprentice they only get the best she was mid but now that we know shes only 12 that means she is actually really impressive she made it this far into the new world as a kid !!! Also just so she can aid nika would be awesome kuma helped them and now his daughter could help them too
Oda connects very deeply with his characters' feelings. I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't finish because he wrote himself into a depressing mood the last couple weeks
Out of every tragic thing that happened, Kuma smiling with his daughter made cry more than Ginny’s passing, seeing a man go through hell and still find joy in the littlest moments.
You know the chapter was good when everyone is too busy crying to process the fact that Bonnie has been confirmed to be 12 years old. (And 10 years pre time-skip)
Bonney diving into zoro while he was saving the abducted woman hits much harder now (although I doubt Bonney knew what happened to Ginny until egghead)
Ods is so good, that the one time he can't finish a manuscript, the chapter still feels fuller and more intense than most chapters he brings out. His output may not be there right now, but the quality is.
Kuma is one of the best written characters in One Piece. He was right in our face the whole time but secretly responsible for so many events that lead to the current state of the one piece world and its fight against the WG. I actually shed tears reading this chapter. I hope Bonney gets a happy ending for her and Kuma 🙏🏽
I think this chapter took alot out of Oda He's a father too but because of his work he must barely get to see his kids so this chapter probably hit deep for him too.
The amount of times I said "No", paused, sighed, teared up and made these faces 😟😧😢😞 while reading this chapter is rediculous. What tragic characters. I know that people used to complain about Oda not k!lling characters outside of flashbacks but I really truly hope Kuma doesn't die. I want him to celebrate his daughter's 19th and 21st birthday together and go on a grand and fun adventure. I hope he gets a happy and wholesome ending.
The even more heartbreaking part of all of it seems that the chapter almost implies that blue sapphire is contracted via contact with a celestial dragon- considering its rarity- and not just physical context, i.e an STD
Honestly I'd prefer he took some time off to recover and maybe get on top of the manga as in get a few chapters ready in advance so he has a buffer incase deadlines get tight again not sure how likely that is tho
Some of the reaction panels have showed more emotion than the past 1097 combined for our boy Kumachi. It's been a while since a chapter made me shed a tear. I don't even have a child so I can only imagine how hard this hit some of you. Edit: Bonny made Kuma aware of sky island, and Kuma sent Nami to Weatheria. Wonder if there's more to that or if it's just a sudden nod. Makes sense that Kuma didn't inflict any physical harm and did the "Where would you like to go for a vacation" line on Perona, having pink hair and being a young girl surely triggered something in Kuma.
I've never felt to mad to a fictional villain, let alone a Shonen villain like these Celestial Dragons. I hope, seriously hope that Oda will keep this dark themed when these Celestial Dragons finally gets killed by our heroes. Like Sukuna casually slicing people kind of dark.
In hindsight it feels like we should have guessed that Kuma isn't Bonney's biological father because in chapter 1095, when Bonney says that Saturn killed her father he comes off as confused for a moment before getting a reaction panel and specifying "Ah. you talking about Kuma." which doesn't really make sense unless there's someone else who could be considered Bonney's father
Yall remember watching the episode where the StrawHats were saying goodbye to the Merry at water7? You can't help but shed a tear. Well...it's been topped😢
@@notass6 I think it's was probably the case, but not caused by the world nobel but rather from pirate. Because even nami, the one we know that directly tortured by pirated for that long and still having a heart to forgive hachi, part of that very crew. Which beg the question, what kind of horrendous act He has gone through to make him so keen on this Absolute justice, though picking the wrong side but still..
It occurs to me that we haven't seen Bonney's wanted poster in the manga. I wonder if it says that she's only wanted alive. Sure in 1095 Saturn ordered the Marines to shot her after she referred to Kuma as her father, but before that he told off the Marines that were getting ready to shot her in response to her stabbing him, and in chapter 1089 he told the Marines that they could leave her alone right after he also told them to kill the escaping citizens of Egghead on the grounds that they might know something.
I don't think kuma can extract the disease. Not only would he have done it if he could, so far we've only seen him being able to remove abstract things from people like memory, pain, fatigue, etc... So even if he removed the pain that the disease causes, the disease itself would still be there.
yep. I think he just does a devil pact with the world Gov and Vegapunk is able to cure her in exchange of full freedom of experimentation on Kuma special bucaneer body and lineage
This was a heartbreaking chapter. After Wano I was like how can Oda top the sadness, my God I'll never doubt Oda again. Also Bonney a celestial dragon?!?!?
While many are quick to say half I'm more leaning on that shes similar to a bastard child of old European nobles, or the child of a slave master in the south with there slave. She probably isn't going to be treated better then a regular citizen by the world government(And if we look at historical records for these types of cases they usually never are)
i’m gonna be honest: i fucking ADORE the sketchy look of kuma’s flashbacks and i think they add so much more to the emotional poignance of the scenes, as i feel the more “raw” and "unrefined” a drawing is, the stronger and more unfiltered the emotion it conveys. HOWEVER!! I am also deeply concerned with Oda’s health and wellbeing, and I don’t think any fans would be too upset to see him take the rest of the year off after this. He’s working so hard on a story he’s almost finished with in the grand sceme of things. I don’t want him to work himself so hard he can’t finish it.
@@majestickgamers4768 he had an eye-surgery. but we dont know if his healthstate right now is connected to the surgery or if sth. else came up. seeing how he basicly worked under high pressure for 25years, i can imagine burnout or similar effects being a possibility as well.. let's hope it's nothing too serious and that he can achieve a schedule that works for him
Ohara pointed out something in 479 we meet St. Charlos and Bonnie in the same chapter, on top of Charlos trying to kidnap and force an engaged woman to marry him, like what happened with Ginny. Charles later on was at a slave auction (Like Ginny and Kuma were slaves which stays with the narrative story)
I think rereading Bonney’s introduction is really interesting now in retrospect, especially with her interaction with Zoro as not only did she transform into a child (which is probably her actual form), but she also prevented Zoro from making a mistake and attacking a Celestial Dragon
@@vojtechtesar7114 you’re probably right but it’s still interesting looking at it retrospectively especially regarding Bonney’s devil fruit and her age
This one genuinely made my jaw drop. And I was outside when reading the chapter, so I must've looked like a right fool. Goddamn this was horrifyingly sad and then painfully bittersweet and then right back to making me flipping cry.
I’m not one to be broken by One Piece, but I have a 4 year old daughter and she calls me “Big Guy” and calls me her “buddy” and this chapter hurt! ….having Kuma tell her everything will be alright even though he knows it won’t. The part about going on the trip and adventures when she’s “older” teared me up more than I want to admit…with Kuma knowing that she wouldn’t make it to that age and with the audience knowing that Kuma won’t be around to watch her grow up…..
As a comic artist myself, I've gotten very emotionally invested into HOW Oda draws his lines and panels. He has a very sketchy, very gestured, but incredibly in confrol style. This chapter though, it felt like reading tear-stained pages with how messy things were, like the eyes of the artist were tear filled and full of pain...and it twisted my gut like a knife. I hope Oda gets better, because after committing his soul to a chapter this dark, I think he deserves a few days spent with his daughters and spent showing us Luffy having a fun, silly time in Gear 5th making everyone in the modern day smile.
Oda writing and drawing about a debilitating illness while he himself is in illness and convalescene has got to be as emotionally draining as it is physically, but tbf it probably gives him that much more to pull on creatively since hes experiencing something similar to the characters he giving life to
I think it's cool to see where Kuma's bible comes from. Little Bonney read it and that's why he carries it around. Would not be surprised if it's one of those hidden books where the story is based on Nika but the cover shows Imu. Makes sense why Perona was the first character to be send on a vacation. She probably reminded Kuma of Bonney.
The worst thing about Blackbeard propositioning Bonney pre-timeskip is that it was after he had defeated her. We know that the Yami-Yami no Mi negates and cancels other devil fruit's powers, so he must have seen her turn back into a child when he negated hers. So he didn't just proposition a 10 year old, he *knowingly* propositioned a 10 year old.
Poor Kuma, the man has been through more suffering then any single person should. Even the Devil himself would look at Kuma and say, "hasn't he been through enough?"
I'd also be happy if Oda switched to a monthly release schedule. Say, around 30 to maybe 40 pages, depending on his health, a month. That way he feels less restrained by the number of pages, has to do less per month so he gets to rest more, and we get a more consistent release schedule without all these rest weeks he's been needing to take.
The author of Jojo switched from weekly to monthly and it improved the pacing, panelling and art of his chapters significantly. It's not even that his story moves slower because he was able to pack more content in every page
Oda must have been talking to the writers at Marvel Comics since Kuma is catching more hell than what Spiderman has been going through over the last few years.....
Speaking of not wanting to know who Bonnie's father is Saturn was weirdly "merciful" towards her before they attacked egghead so that's something unfortunate to think about until the next chapter comes out
Fuck i have never been this sad reading OP. This chapter was heartbreaking. Heard ODA was crying while writing it. My god, I needed to take a few breathers while reading this one. RIP to Ginny, Kumachi's heart. Have never felt this much sympathy for a fictional character before.
The "Rough" sketches of the pages while appearing messy, actually worked for me to show the chaos that Kuma was going through with both fighting for the Revolutionary army and being a father for Bonney. But I do hope Oda gets better soon.
Oda has to realize that eventually his rule on "no intentional killings as Luffy destroys their dream which is just as bad" will have to come to an end soon... The one piece world will never know peace till every last celestial on high is put 6ft under or deeper.
This was the first time my belly kind hurt reading a chapter. Kuma's backstory is by far the saddest one in the story so far and Ginny is most likely THE most tragic character...All I want is to see an SBS where we can see both of them chilling somewhere with Bonney.
I hope Oda does not get push to keep working and he can take his deserved rest, he probably needs it and we, as fans, should support and take care of his health and not pressure for more and more content.
Last time I broke down crying this hard reading One Piece was back on Whole Cake Island, with Luffy telling Sanji he can't become the Pirate King without him. It's rare that this series actually makes me ugly cry, but it really hits hard when it does.
The tragedy of this whole chapter hurt me. The worst part it still has to go downhill. I always loved Kuma, the fact he might be one of the most noble characters in the story makes me wish he was seen as the hero he is and not the tyrant he is framed as in the world. Justice for Ginny.
The golden ring under Bonny's eye in modern day is in the same place as her sapphire stones were. Another cute detail and amazing foreshadowing by Oda. Man this chapter hit like a truck.
Te quiero mucho, Liam. Sos mi creador de contenido One Piece favorito porque sos muy sensato, dulce y considerado. No solo con l historia sino como persona en general. Ojalá Oda esté bien y podamos seguir con esta maravillosa historia.
I really have trouble paying attention to the timeline when reading the chapter. If I hadn't watched your video I wouldn't have noticed that Kuma completed his cyborg transformation and lost his free will exactly when Bonney was 10 years old and should have died from the desease. Thanks for your videos, Grandlinereview!
Kuma's story is damn sad. I cannot imagine that this was where we were heading. There were many ways this story could have gone, but I don't think we knew it would go this route. In regards to Bonnie's age, there's a part of me that thinks this is a Momonosuke situation. In order for Bonnie to do what she feels she needs to do, she can't have the body of a child. Maybe by permanently distorting her age she also found a roundabout cure for her illness.
i got chills reading this chapter, chills i only get when i’m very uncomfortable or anxious. i then think back to akainu saying that he had a “cold shiver down his spine” when bonney escaped the WG and think it had something to do with her lineage on the father side.
I didn't even notice that the pages were just sketches I thought they were an artistic choice in order to convey how Kuma's mind in that moment was falling apart and to build the tension even further. So I actually quite enjoyed it.
This was such a heartbreaking chapter but I thought the sketch work actually added to the intensity of the chapter as a whole making it feel even more emotional
A disturbing thought occurred. So Ginny had the sickness way later in life, and Bonnie did as a child. Is there a possibility that she got the disease from the father?
One interesting thing is that even though Kuma is the merciless soldier with the Rev, Sabo always said he was gentle and kind. So, even with the RA, Kuma had his fatherly elements.
Kuma asking bonnie what she wanted to do once she got well hit so close to home for me. I spent a few months in the hospital last year with a horrible cronic illness and fantasising about that kind of stuff helped me cope through it all. One piece is fucking me up emotionally omg
It took an effort not to cry in public while reading this chapter. And then I go and watch this video and you made me shead a damn tear talking about Ginny...
I'm hoping that Oda was only behind on this chapter because its taboo subject matter required a lot more editorial input and draft revision than he usually needs, since its something Jump hasn't allowed him to publish at least once in the past. The pages in the worst shape were the ones touching on Ginny's death and Bonney's birth, so there could have been last minute edits he simply didn't have time to complete. That's being optimistic though, and if the chapter quality doesn't pick up from here then somethings really going wrong behind the scenes.
Ace was offered a warlord position when he was a rookie and he was a rookie 3 years before luffy, 5 years before now, Ace almost got Kumas Warlord spot
ngl the sketches looked like an artistic choice to me when i was reading the chapter to like show the way kuma's life just gets more rough and kinda put his suffering in a more visual design

I think the “sketch” panels of this chapter worked perfectly. It shows how rough and dark Kuma’s past got.
The sketches actually make the chapter better. It's as if we can physically see kuma's world breaking down.
I thought it was an artistic choice lol. I also quite enjoyed it
@@melange8452same, I didn’t know it was incomplete
I thought so too because it coincidentally happened during Kuma's biggest breakdowns, Ginny's death and Bonney getting the same disease, but I'm sure GOda just couldn't finish in time and he's earned some slack @@melange8452
Tbh, im an artist and i absolutely loved this tragic chapter being in mostly sketches pushed it to a whole other level of raw emotion. It felt unstable like kuma not trying to break after all this hardship. At least that's how i felt when i read it.
Yeah, It's like a fuzzy memory in the brain, since it's a flashback of course
Honestly before I learned the real reason I thought it was intentional for the same reason. Made it hit even harder imho.
What sold it even more to me though because the happy moments were more clearly finished. What made me think it was intentional, and honestly I would kinda like it to stay as is because of how effective it worked out being.
But yes Oda needs a break, and I hope he is okay.
"Tbh, im an artist"
No you aren't. you can't even tell the difference between good and bad manga. a writer sends in a submission halfway finished and you rave over it. You know what that means? It means you're a complete poser.
@@jimbeam-ru1my This is the saltiest thing i've ever tasted, and I one time had a heaping bowl of salt
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Kuma’s final attack is a devestating ursa shock that releases all the pain he’s taken in his life. If he does turn up Saturn is in for a bad time…
For sure
I was not ready for Bonney having this dark a backstory while still building on the tragedy of Kuma.
Berserk vibes
I know creepy af
Nope, i definitely noticed that.. Can't simp for her now i guess
Anime only watchers rn 💀💀💀
Also cant forget the fact Blackbeard tried to take her in to clap those underage cheeks....
Oda is the creepy one. Mans was jail-baiting.
Kuma dancing like his father is the best thing I've seen.
Bonney diving into zoro while he was saving the abducted woman hits much harder now (although I doubt Bonney knew what happened to Ginny until egghead)
yeah i just remembered that omg 10 yr old girl thinking thaaat much
Honestly I expect SH to be cemented as her heroes by the end of this arc, because that's what they are to her at least.

I hope Bonney gets a happy ending for her and Kuma 🙏🏽
kuma is the definition of sacrifice. oda must end him, i just hope he doesn't offscreen him like the others in this arc.
That moment where Bonney prevented Zoro from attacking a World Noble hits different now
I think this chapter took alot out of Oda
He's a father too but because of his work he must barely get to see his kids so this chapter probably hit deep for him too.
Is that why CDs wear those suits? To protect themselves 🤔
Thats probably why Bonny is showing symptoms to.
@@A.S._Trunks probably not since doflaming and his family didn't use them, this is probably a STD since ginny got it too
Naaaah bro that's too wild. You're saying bonney got an STd from her dead mom? c'mon, bro..
Personally I wouldn't mind if Oda took an extended break, it will also give us time to emotionally recover from this chapter and to also digest it.
I totally agree!
Kuma is really the most tragic character in the whole story how can a man edure all this pain and suffering and still be positive is beyond me.
I've never felt to mad to a fictional villain, let alone a Shonen villain like these Celestial Dragons. I hope, seriously hope that Oda will keep this dark themed when these Celestial Dragons finally gets killed by our heroes.
Like Sukuna casually slicing people kind of dark.
suddenly Xebec seems more of a nice guy that I thought.
@@amukbir8777 I don't believe he's that evil too, he might be just like Dragon who wants to destroy the Celestial Dragons
Are you reading two piece? KUMA is the only father she ever had or knew
Yall remember watching the episode where the StrawHats were saying goodbye to the Merry at water7? You can't help but shed a tear. Well...it's been topped😢
I say Oda is just warming up his brain juices to hit us with an absolutely agonising Akainu backstory
let's just hope that's the case
If not, I will keep hating him for doing katakuri's job on ace.
perhaps his family were killed by xebec. given his "Justice" he would have to have strong resentment towards a pirate crew

This was one of those few chapters where I couldn't stop the tears. Poor Kuma and his family
I hope Oda takes care of himself. He has given us so much for so long, he needs to prioritize himself even more.

You might be wrong. He hasn't figures that out yet. Otherwise, he would definitely do so with Ginny's memories when they were children.
we know he can remove memories because his memories are stored on Egghead@@mermer2938
This was a heartbreaking chapter. After Wano I was like how can Oda top the sadness, my God I'll never doubt Oda again. Also Bonney a celestial dragon?!?!?
Half
half of one yea

But Oda probably didn´t even plan Bonney to be a child back then. He came up with the supernovas at the last minute.
@@vojtechtesar7114 you’re probably right but it’s still interesting looking at it retrospectively especially regarding Bonney’s devil fruit and her age
Oda really going for the sadest lifestory with Kuma, it's so heart breaking
The unfinished artwork is really incredible at communicating the mental state of Kuma in that period. I loved it. This chapter hits hard.
Same i felt like i was reading another manga and the dark moment was impactful.
Oda is cooking right now.
One piece was crazy good this week
This one genuinely made my jaw drop. And I was outside when reading the chapter, so I must've looked like a right fool. Goddamn this was horrifyingly sad and then painfully bittersweet and then right back to making me flipping cry.
Best wishes to Oda-sensei. May he take as long as he needs to truly recover.
And the uncompleted art really matched the story in this chapter. It felt like Kuma's life is breaking apart
Safe to say Kuma never finds a cure which is what leads to Bonney getting her fruit.
Probably became a government dog to get it
Law vibes all over again.
So he didn't just proposition a 10 year old, he *knowingly* propositioned a 10 year old.
holy shit you’re right
Nah, I don't think Oda thought that far, Blackbeard is not as disgusting as the celestial dragons.
Nah.. You are imagining things
The editor truly deserves a raise for the animations .
Never realised untill this chapter that kuma’s lifeless eyes was just his glasses hiding his eyes.
To my understanding, Modern-day kuma actually has cybernetic glass eyes
Speaking of not wanting to know who Bonnie's father is Saturn was weirdly "merciful" towards her before they attacked egghead so that's something unfortunate to think about until the next chapter comes out
It could be because she's a half celestial dragon - but yeah, that's a possibility as well..
@@DaijDjanI think they mean he might be the dad
What if Saturn is Bonnie's father 😬?
As a father with a lil girl... This was rough.. full teared up
Hug her as much as possible
This was the first time my belly kind hurt reading a chapter. Kuma's backstory is by far the saddest one in the story so far and Ginny is most likely THE most tragic character...All I want is to see an SBS where we can see both of them chilling somewhere with Bonney.
I really thought Senor Pink's backstory was the saddest until reading this chapter 😢
Nah pretty tame compared to white beards death lol
I hope Oda does not get push to keep working and he can take his deserved rest, he probably needs it and we, as fans, should support and take care of his health and not pressure for more and more content.
Didn't expect Ginny to be kidnapped, enslaved, R*p3'd, then die from disease. It's like Oda started reading Berserk or something.
Last time I broke down crying this hard reading One Piece was back on Whole Cake Island, with Luffy telling Sanji he can't become the Pirate King without him.
It's rare that this series actually makes me ugly cry, but it really hits hard when it does.
Dude, I'm 28, and I just finished reading the chapter and I'm still crying...
The tragedy of this whole chapter hurt me. The worst part it still has to go downhill. I always loved Kuma, the fact he might be one of the most noble characters in the story makes me wish he was seen as the hero he is and not the tyrant he is framed as in the world. Justice for Ginny.
You know it's bad when a Berserk chapter and a One Piece chapter release simultaneously, and One Piece is darker
Yes , but darker not = the best .
I'm berserk fan and i can say this chapter is better than berserk chapter ( in story not of art ..)
Kumas quickly become one of my favorite characters. I hope he gets a somewhat happy ending by the end of the arc.
I like how the unfinished sketches look. They can be interpreted as Kuma's mind deteriorating.
Maybe by permanently distorting her age she also found a roundabout cure for her illness.
i wonder how she got age age fruit , hmmm
i got chills reading this chapter, chills i only get when i’m very uncomfortable or anxious. i then think back to akainu saying that he had a “cold shiver down his spine” when bonney escaped the WG and think it had something to do with her lineage on the father side.
I didn't even notice that the pages were just sketches I thought they were an artistic choice in order to convey how Kuma's mind in that moment was falling apart and to build the tension even further. So I actually quite enjoyed it.
I will never be tired of seeing the art of Akainu punching through Kuma and flipping the bird. Hilarious
I loved the panels of Kuma going from laughing and playing with Bonnie to holding injured bodies in a revolution.
Like you said as a HXH manga reader, a month hiatus would not hurt since were used to it. Oda definitely needs several weeks off to rest.
One interesting thing is that even though Kuma is the merciless soldier with the Rev, Sabo always said he was gentle and kind. So, even with the RA, Kuma had his fatherly elements.
Kuma found the All Blue before Sanji (it was Ginny) 💀
YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT
Kuma asking bonnie what she wanted to do once she got well hit so close to home for me.
Ace was offered a warlord position when he was a rookie and he was a rookie 3 years before luffy, 5 years before now, Ace almost got Kumas Warlord spot
her being a celestial dragon makes sense why the navy is nice to her
Makes it understandable why Akainu and Saturn handle her the way they do, Saturn's reluctance to harm her.
I have a feeling that Oda probably found writing this chapter too painful and just couldn't finish the work.
ngl the sketches looked like an artistic choice to me when i was reading the chapter to like show the way kuma's life just gets more rough and kinda put his suffering in a more visual design
