Whether it's through video/photo analysis and defector's recollection, it's perfectly reasonable that you can obtain information on their pattern of clothing and hair through the years.
In other words, even if you aren't submerged in it....someone is and you can obtain that. These days, I can find random people more educated in my own culture than me lol

Whether you believe it’s propaganda or not, these images are literally what the North Korean government has put out and wanted to put out. North Korean defectors can tell you as well. They don’t wear much makeup, they celebrate hard work and wearing symbols and garments of the ruling party. There are videos you can search on RUclips from the government itself that praise their own values. These images aren’t even negative. They show exactly the ideals of communism. 🤦🏻

2010년대 초반 방송이나 아이돌들 영상 보면 눈화장이 다들 진해요ㅋㅋ 12~13년도쯤까진 저렇게 진하게 하고다니는 사람 많이봤음ㅋㅋㅋ 그러다 어느샌가부터 연해지기 시작함

And as for them learning English - that is the international language. Germans learn it, French learn it, Japanese learn it. If a Chinese goes to Korea they will generally use English to communicate. South Korea beauty standards in this video for me look much more like American beauty standards.. I found it very confusing, the Korean culture I know wouldn't go for the look depicted here..
That is exactly what I asked my South Korean mother! She was, however, nodding in agreement the whole time (except for 2010... that seems more Korean-American). She said that Korean style "was the same" as American, and looking at my family's photos, it pretty much was. I guess the K-pop movement was when they went crazy... :)
south korean fashion and beauty is very western (until recently, the 2010s is of course very wrong). korean pop culture is very edgy and urban OR classy and high end. it's been heavily influenced by the western world.

this was a nice video esp. to see N. Korea. We tend to forget that they are regular people with their own beauty standard(tho more regulated) S.Korean beauty trend now tho is way less makeup. They love pale,dewy skin, they dont wear big earrings, they definitely don't wear that much eyeliner, they don't highlight cheekbones, gradient lip or nude lip is in and we all know they love straight brows.

well I was talking only about the video. And the north korean chick in it doesn't wear work clothes all the time.
Because they don't have individuality or freedom to wear what they please. Thus, they have a limited amount to what they can wear. Plus, North Korea isn't as exposed to western culture as the South is.

South Korea is very westernized with the media and such. I never said that it was the better choice.
What I'm trying to point out is that these people to even get the chance to express their styles and creativity in they way that they like. Or the government goes after them. Milaii I was thinking the same thing. I wear mostly Korean style makeup and it looks nothing like the video. It's soft and natural with flawless skin.
I agree. I lean towards Korean makeup too and it looks NOTHING like that. Straight brows, tear bags, dewy skin, gradient lips, VERY natural eye makeup, natural blush. That's generally what it looks like.

Oh don't get me wrong. I do have my share of female Korean friends (none of which had plastic surgery to my knowledge) who I find to be among the most attractive people I know. It's just that where I'm from, people tend to tease each other and laugh at ourselves based on our own stereotypes even though we know that they're not 100% true.
So to many others here, I really didn't intend to mean this to be offensive in any way, and I apologize if that's the impression I gave. Maybe it's a cultural thing where sensitivity concerns and humor may differ depending on where we're from.

I'm Korean and we live in Busan, Korea Republic of and the 2010 style is not like that in Korea, we do not do western makeup, it's too much for us. All of us Koreans don't wear makeup to be honest all we wear is skin care products!

I feel like the last one for South Korea wasn't THAT accurate though. I was waiting for the Chestnut/Blonde/Light brown dyed hair that's been trending there now, lol even in men. Oh and the lip stain trend. And that really thin eyeliner I think , oh and the thick but faint eyebrows with not much of an arch...i think lol that's pretty much I all I see

She means the makeup style and she's absolutely correct. I'm Korean American and live in Seoul and everyone I know uses: pink tint, and decent eyeliner and not like the horrendous example up there.
