Man, I feel so bad for Travis! Being closely watched by one of the most respected drummers in the world... Hell, I'd probably shit my pants, dude! MP is my 2nd favorite drummer of all time and main inspiration for how I behave on stage.
Actually as far as a warm-up goes, mister Travis Smith had the I guess you could say more correct method. As a marching drummer myself we usually play 8's for at least 5 minutes followed by some form of double and triple beats and ending on rolls. Usually you want you're warm-ups to be more difficult than the music you actually end up playing.
Travis' routine actually is a bit more sound in regards to the results it would achieve. I don't care for his drumming, but he's definitely a more than capable guy technique-wise judging from this.

@chaveznieves As long as I can remember DT, Portnoy always did hold his left stick bacwards. However he ocationally flips it to normal position, expecially when playing patterns on ride, high-hat etc. In one interview he said it evens out the hitting force between his hands.
I don't think he strives to be particularly outlandishly technical, which is a smart move as it allows there to be a good sense of grounding in DT's music. So, within a technical frame, it probably hasn't moved much, but in terms of rudiments, I think Mike has fantastic creativity, which never ceases to flow.
It's Hard to Ccompare them-Portnoy was in highschool when Smith was born, and they play completely different styles. Portnoy does prog, while Smith does thrash. Neither of them are musically or rudimentally orientated drummers. They are rockers Post Script:When he says triplets he obviously reffers to the rudimental excercise "Sing's, Dub's, Trip's." That's for you posers who thiink you know something. Post Post Script: Portnoy looked bored while Travis was going over his routine-LOL!
travis's warm up is the exact same as the indiana state marching band drum line warm up...... but mike is so much better. double stroke rolls are alot harder to play then simple 8th notes on alternating hands.
Nick Agusto was the one that the had on the tour and in Shattering the Skies Above his drum work and its pretty good if you get over it not being travis.
A masseuse will come to the gig and massage me before the show, just to get my butt...my muscles on my arms and wrists and also my back and neck streched out.
@comptilion That's because Mike went to Berklee College of Music, the Harvard University of music schools and Travis didn't lol. They're both good drummers nevertheless though. Mike's a more technical player though so of course he's gonna blow Travis out of the water. I'm not bashing Travis cuz I'm a HUGE Trivium fan, I'm just saying Mike's been drumming longer and has more experience under his belt
