I never watched Carson through the decades he was on television, as my Mother did, I missed all these talents. Thanks to RUclips I can now see what I missed. What giants of entertainment were around then.
Hackett is The Classic Borscht Belt Comedian. Enjoyed life, loved to laugh and anyone around him he made laugh with him. People like Buddy Hackett, Red Buttons, Rodney Dangerfield, Alan King, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers; all came from The Catskills before Vegas and way before AC. If you were from New York you knew these guys and their reputations as The Funniest People in the World.
Wow! Never thought I'd ever see a "bonefone" again but there it was. That radio Johnny held up and turned off at the start of this clip was the biggest piece of crap ever invented. Back in the day, I worked at Tower Records. It was a great job and fun. But every person and their grandmother would come in and ask us to take their products on consignment as a way to test the market. We saw every kind of gimmick and few of them ever caught on. So the idea of the bonefone was, if you jogged or just want to listen to stereo music on your favorite FM station, you'd wrap this thing around your neck just like Johnny did. It took 4 AAA batteries. It was made of leather with that blue cover that fit over it like a sleeve. It had two stereo speakers that were positioned in such a way that when you wrapped this thing around your neck the speakers would be 2 or 3 inches from your ears. But, the speakers were to small and volume to low that most the time you couldn't hear anything. It was a bomb and not worth the $99 dollar price. Seeing one on Johnny's desk was unexpected but if you notice the slight hissing sound that made him turn it off, that's how bad the reception was and as high the volume would go. How strange going back in time to see something I used to sell in my store. USELESS JUNK!
@@mircat28 True but not by choice, and he didn't start out that way, it's because some of the clubs he played where so rough as where their owners that he was told (not asked) that he had to perform certain jokes in a distasteful way which was out of buddys control ! .

Dean Martin was on one night and Carson was wearing one of those god-awful sport coats, like he has on in this show, and Dean said: “The Italian restaurant called and they want their table cloth back.” Then Dean asked: “Don’t you have your own line of clothes? “And Johnny said “yes,”and Dean just looked at him as if to say then there’s no excuse for wearing that hideous thing.
Sad thing is that every time they shoot in on a close-up of the guest, Johnny is smoking a cigarette and trying to hide hide. So sad that Cigarettes had that much hold on Johnny. You can see it in his eyes when he needed a puff! Cigarettes got Johnny Carson and also was a huge distraction in his career. He could have been much better!
Cigarettes had no influence on his success or non-success. I could care less if someone smokes: we live in the USA. "He could have been so much better." At what? Or do you mean his "worth" or " value " to society. Sounds like soc/commie talk. Not smoking doesn't give you or your life extra value. Christ does.
rich42012 that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!! Johnny was the most influential person of his era! And the biggest star of his time! And worth $350 million dollars when he died and his career started in early 60’s when he started the Tonight show meaning pay was a lot less back then compared to today and he still amassed $350 million!!! AND you think cigarettes hindered his career?!?! Just an idiotic statement!!!

My mom wouldn't let me stay up to see Buddy because he was "GUCKY!"
Perhaps the most likable human being in show Business ever. His comedy still holds up to this day.
Love this fella Buddy Hackett. Could listen to him all day

Genius
Never to be repeated
He was like Bud Abbott with more brains
Buddy was SUCH a classy guy. Thanks for posting this.
I miss shows and people like them. Late night nowadays are disgusting
Buddy was something special. He seems well read and curious about a lot of things.
He was, however, one of the dirtiest mouthed comics when he was doing his act in a club. What you see on TV is not the real comic.
@@mircat28 oh No KIDDING..some of them were blue-er than blue. Redd Foxx was one. But Eddie Murphy is too. So were the old guys trailblazers?

When Buddy Hackett walked into a room, it was His room immediately.
Todays comedians don't even come close to how funny Buddy was.

People who had their funny bones removed.
Both so missed
I wonder if there's a collab between Hackett and Dangerfield..that would have been riot💯
Mr Cobbs have you ever seen it’s a mad mad mad world. FUNNY as eff
I doubt it. Dangerfield was never as potty mouth as Hackett.

The biggest con, is 'organic food'. What else is there? Metallic food? All food is organic.
There is such a thing as synthetic food.
Organic is a strict protocol of growing regulations.
See a label with organic on it. It has no legal meaning.

Smoking gave him emphysema and it killed him but it had no affect on his career.
