Thank you for this video! I have a 2022 3500 with 29900 miles and on my way to a camping trip I got the dreaded 150 miles to 5 mph code 160 miles from home. Without previously having to deal with this code or knowing anything about it, it definitely put a damper on our trip. I opted to continue on to our destination 63 miles away. I started to search RUclips for potential causes of the code and came across a lot of videos leading to either a dirty or bad def injector. Yours however is different in the way you cleaned the injector without removing it making it a simple and fast trouble shoot with me being at a campsite. I followed your instruction and when the injector was removed it had crystallization limiting the opening down to a small pin hole. That got my hopes up in hoping that it just need to be cleaned. I heated some water in my camp stove and poured it into my coffee mug and dipped the injector in the cup with the injector in place. The crystallization broke down in less than 10 seconds and was like new again. I reinstalled the injector and started the motor. It took a few minutes of idle for the code to clean and we were able to enjoy the rest of our trip without having to cut it short with a long tow home. Thank you so much for sharing the info. I will now be using Peak Platinum DEF as it is supposed to minimize the crystallization. I’ll also be getting a spare injector to keep on my truck in case the next time this happens it’s a bad injector. I can replace it easily without ruining a trip.
I'm still trying to figure out why the WD40 was used on the bolts? Makes it sound like it was sprayed on the bolts after they were out. Why not use an anti-sieze?
I tried to do mine yesterday and both 10 mm bolts sheered right off even though I used PB blasteron them so what a nightmare it was to take this unit down on the ground by myself so I could drill the bolts out and retap the holes. No I'm waiting for gaskets and to pick up new bolts so I'll be able to put this thing back together so I guess my nightmare continues until I see if it worked when I put it back up. What a pain in the neck literally. Lucky you caught yours in time.
@colinchalmers1099 yes I used a pointed center punch to mark the center then starting with a very small drill bit and drilled through the center then used a extractor bit in the hole I drilled in the center. The bit bites the broken bolt when you insert it because it lefthand threaded but the key is to use lots of penetration oil. I bought the bolts on Amazon because I couldn't get them locally because of the odd metric thread. Hope this helps.
I tried to remove those 10 mm bolts and they sheared right off. What a nightmare I had to remove the entire unit down out of the truck to drill the bolts out and retap the holes now I'm waiting for gaskets to put the unit back together the one large flange gasket and the injector gasket which is made out of lead mind broken half when I removed the injector but you were a 100% right I did have crystals clogging my injector. Now I just have to Reassemble it after I get the gaskets and after I recover from this horrendous job I feel like this thing kicked my butt... I wish mine came apart like yours.
The best thing to do is to purchase a new DEF injector from the dealer, they do not need to be cleaned out that often. If the injector gets clogged the dealer replaces it at no cost. Alot of people purchase those cheap injectors from Amazon and I've done many videos showing how people are now selling knock off parts. I have over 520,000k miles on my truck and have only replaced the DEF injector 3x's the 2nd time was because of a defective one and the dealer swapped it out last year, haven't had anymore issues since. These things don't last forever, but good quality parts will definitely make the work less frequent. I know the dealer can be pricey, but it's a risk buying cheap parts these days.
The video was very helpful, except for the fact, he neglected to mention that there is a def injector gasket that you need to replace once in a while so that three minute job for me, turned into a two day job because I had a bolt that broke and I had to drill it out and I had to replace the def injector gasket and I had to replace the injector gasket which was heat welded to the injector and the mounting. However, I would suggest using never seize or anti-seize on the bolts instead of WD-40.
Hello, I am new to the channel, excellent tips to learn, I have a ram 2500 diesel heavy duty year 2022, the innova 5210 scanner, what model is it because there are many, which one is correct, what do you recommend, greetings from Texas
So I’m curious if my 3500 is as simple to get to as your 5500? I’m curious as to why it needs to be cleaned every 3 weeks? Because the engine light comes on? I’m new to owning a diesel so any help is much appreciated! ✌🏽
Yes my engine light would turn on and service Def light too. I was using bio diesel and cheap Def. I now use regular diesel and blue Def (Costco sells it for $13.99) I haven’t cleaned it in over 2 months.
@@riosautotransportllc have you used truck stop DEF or what were you using.. one question.. is this not HOT when you pull over?? seem like this is exhaust system and should be hot as hell..
If possible I'd keep another one In truck for quick swap and cleannother later after delivery. Cause time is money. Be back on road. Gotta be ready for any situation cause on road never know atleast there's a back up
Did you ever look down into the scr for build up of def? That is common on trucks that idle a lot or that are used heavy towing, there is or was a campaign for this issue by installing a def umbrella, I have 80k on my 3500 never had that issue, but I also work on dpf and scr issue everyday as a mechanic
I’m concerned I’m going to snap off the bolts. I’ve been soaking with PB blaster for several days now. It would be nice to know the bolt size. Some have replaced with ss bolts. If I do ever get them out I’m going to treat them with some hi temp anti seez 😊
Mf my bolts were rusted so bad I thought it was 8 mm then ended up welding 3/8 nut with 9/16 wrench snapped off after about 2 move the other side I sanded im not sure if have to get pipe or can tack weld it my truck was parked to much and rusty I did see a lot white so now I’ll try hot water and maybe see if my brother can fix the bolts
The regen is supposed to take care of this. How often does your truck do the regen? I'm starting to think I don't run mine enough to get it to regen correctly.
It was building up and causing my engine light to turn on. I switched to Blue Def (I buy at Costco) and I no longer use biodiesel, I haven't had this issue in a few months.
@darrylvaillancourt6144 i got the injector off it cost me 600 bucks but the injector is cracked so i have to buy a new injector, rock auto has the part for about 180

95 dollars at autozone
Also clean this if def usage goes up. The white crystals mess with the spray pattern which makes it less efficient.

I agree. I switched to Blue Def Platinum and no longer use Biodiesel fuel.

There is a gasket on the injector. Keep one in the glove box.

When the message popped up says - Exhaust System Service Required See Dealer. What does it mean? Is it the same issue as yours?
My message said Service Def see dealer on my 2016 Dodge 5500. It didn’t mention exhaust.

Do you use diesel #2 or Bio? I had the same issue using Bio.
Every month!? I used blue def for 92,000 in 7 years no problems, but I am switching to Platinum

Wow haven’t cleaned mine yet.

where did you get your replacement DEF injector? Thanks
I bought it directly From the dealership.
You have a P2471 clean your egr cooler / valve its clogged.
Try cleaning the injector, if code doesn’t clear you may need to clear it yourself.
I have been using the Def from Pilot J. Do they sell cheap def?
I’m not sure, I use blue def. I buy it at Costco but they sell it at other locations.
